HEPPNER GAZETTE-TIMES, Thursday, September 23, 1971 i Lexington Leaner Tops Club News After a summer period of Tuesday morning meetings, the Lexington Leaner Tops Club Is now back on its winter sched ule of Tuesday at 2:30, at the Lexington City Hall. This fall the group is having several contests which are bas ed on point systems and stim ulate friendship, the loss of weight, and the recruitment of new members for the club. Junior High Visits Gazette-Times The 82 class of Ileppner Jun ior High School Communicatioas class visited the Heppner Gazette-Times office Tuesday after noon. The clas is studying newspapers and journalism. Dennis Cass their teacher and Charlie Pointer student assistant from the high school accompa nied them. Visiting were David Brand hagen, Steve Malcom, Brian Bo ner, Sandy Bennett, Allen Burk eiibine, Pat Baker, Debby Cox, Mary Ann Greenup, Suzanne Cutsforth, Jim Boyce and Robert Kckman. The group presented a book to Bill Rawlins in appreciation of his leadership for the past two years. It was a book on Peonies. A constitution was adopted and By-Laws will be presented at the next meeting. Mrs. Cut ting was in charge of the pro gram on House Plants. She was assisted by her daughter, Van essa. They compared the quali ties of house plants against set standards: form, texture, color ing, condition and placing. The October meeting on the second Monday will be at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Raw lins. Graves Scholarships Announced Announcment was made this week that Patty Proctor and Peter McElligott are recipients of the John W. Graves 4-H Mem orial Scholarship. Patti is a 1971 graduate of Riverside High School, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Proctor, Irrigon. She will attend BMCC this fall with future plans to major in Home Economics. As an active 4-H member for 9 years, and a junior leader, she has participated in many 4-H events. Peter, son of Mr. and Mrs. Don McElligott, lone, plans to attend University of Portland for two years and then OSU with inter ests in business administration and agriculture technology Peter's 4-H interests have been in livestock and junior leader ship. The scholarship selection is made by a committee of im partial 4-H leaders. To be eli gible for the award the students must have been active 4-H members for at least three years prior to graduation. Funds for the award are from a trust es tablished as a memorial to John W. Graves and may be used to attend any college, junior col lege, trade school or any type of education beyond high school level. The John Graves scholarship is a memorial to the man who was dedicated to 4-H youth de velopment and an active com munity leader. The Graves fam ily carry on the tradition by con tinued involvement in 4-H youth work and community affairs, in addition to continuing the scholarship. That the creation of a water control district and the con struction of dikes, and the In stallation of pumping plants and the construction of other surface water control works will be of benefit to the lands with in said district and that the con struction of said works will be conducive to the public health, welfare, or safety.
