BOX 505, CINCINNATI, OHIO 45315 Fran Warren, president of Portland General Electric Com pany has said his firm feels they will be in need of a second nuclear power plant by the end of this decade. Mr. Warren said the compa ny wishes to file notices of in tent for construction permits within the next six months. That way, he explained, the chances of winning approval of at least one , site would be heightened. No application for a construe tion permit may be made until a year after notice of intent has been filed. The council has an other year to study the appli cation, and construction can't start for another year after the permit has been granted. But nothing can be started until after site studies of the entire state have been complet ed, and this could take some time. But Kessler Cannon, the gov ernor's natural resources coordi nator, suggested that the coun cil consider sharing the task with the utilities, since the council won't have adequate manpower to do the Job quick ly. After the statewide studies have been done, the council le gally could shorten the time per iod for the start of construction of a nuclear plant. Warren said that the law means construction couldn't start for 3 years unless the time period can be shortened by a waiver. And it would take an other 1 years for the plant to be constructed. Warren said that without shortening the time period a second plant couldn't be com pleted until mid-1979, and that by 1978 the system will already have an energy deficit. While PGE wants to file no tices of intent on several sites, it plans only one more nuclear plant at present. Warren said the company is flexible about site, but said PGE Is looking most closely at Eastern Oregon. A lederal -state task force has identified several possible loca tions in the general area from Arlington to Pendleton along the Columbia River. Warren said the company is considering allying itself with larm groups, which might be able to use warm water from the nuclear power cooling system for , irrigation.- This would make the plant cheaper to build since a cooling tower wouldn't be needed. PGE is building the state's first nuclear power plant at Rainier in , Columbia County. Retirement Trip To Indianapolis Mrs. Adraln Bechdolt has had a wonderful start on her retire ment with a fun trip to a Bech dolt family reunion at Indian apolis. Mr. and Mrs. Bechdolt accompanied by Adrian's broth er, Archie Bechdolt, flew to In dianapolis for the reunion. There were 47 present. The Bechdolts last attended the reunion 15 years ago when they went back. They were driven here and there by their many relatives all ov er the state of Indiana. They were impressed with the crops this year which are "simply marvelous". The miles and miles of flat land are planted to corn ana soy Deans. ' They returned home by bus. At Rapid City, Iowa, they stop ped and took two 8-hour Gray- line tours. They went to see the Bad Lands and Rushmore Mem orial. They termed both of these fabulous' and think everyone should see them both. They came on home by bus. This was their first flight. At Chicago they had a jarring ex perience. They were held in the air during a terrific lightning storm. The storm knocked out the computer for landing and take-off. Planes were lined up at the airport for take-off so it was sometime before they were able to take off on the last leg of their journey to Indianapolis is expected to be in service by September of 1974'. But even with the power it will produce, Warren said PGE will have an energy shortage one or two years later. In answer to a question about whether PGE is considering in vestigating the possibility of developing underground steam resources, Warren said, "We're actively Interested." But he added, "We don't re gard it as an immediate source of large quantities of power." The council set its next meet ing for July 30. The principal business will be to interview candidates for the top executive job in the council, that of coor dinator. : (AP) VACATION AT LEHMAN Mrs. Kit George, Kimberly and Cameron and Mrs. Len Ray Schwarz, Ronnie, Pat and Ted are spending this week at Leh man Springs. Mr. Martin Zim merman, Gilliam County Agent, told the group of lone Garden Club members at Mrs. Lee Pet tyjohn's ranch home July 14. Club members brought the following weeds for Mr. Zlm- weed, purslane, chick weed, sow thistle, nightshade, knot weed, lambsquarter, Chinese lettuce, oxalis and fleabane. "What's the best way to con trol weeds around gardens and yards? Of course, the best way is by cultivation with the "ole hoe". The hoe has some modern and effective helpers in form of herbicides. Mr. Zimmerman named four particular chemicals the home or farm gardener could use when the hoe handle gets tired and overworked. Most useful around shrubs, roses, bulbs, iris, perennials, foundation plantings and estab lished annuals is Simazine. Very effective for edging grass and driveways, brick or flag stone walks. Controls foxtail, tar weed, and cheat grass. " ' Dacthal is good to use in vegetable gardens to prevent germination of weed seed. Amine is used on broadleaf weeds, such as dandelions. Casserone is used on perennial weeds such as quack grass, morning glory, and Rusian knapp weed. In discussing lawn problems with Mr. Zimmerman, he sug gested planting new lawns with bluegrass and creeping red fescue seed. The bluegrass will grow well in sunshine and the red fescue in the shady areas.
