THE HEPPNER GAZETTE-TIMES THURSDAY, JUNE 17, 1971 SECTION 2 Mutual Party Held For Irrigon Couples By FRANCES ROSE WILSON IRRIGON A double surprise party for Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Burger and Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Jorgensen was the occasion for the meeting held at the Irrigon Lions Club building Saturday, Juno 12. The Borgcrs were hon ored on their 40th wedding an nlversary and the Jorgenscns on their 33rd. Hostesses planning the affair were Mrs. Ernest Jorgensen, Mrs. Maxwell Jones and Mrs. Lee LeBlanc. Mrs. Jorgensen, earnestly engaged In planning for the Bergers, was unaware that the others were planning a surprise for them as well. Both couples have been active ly engaged In community af fairs and in Lions Club and Auxiliary activities. City Council Meeting Transfer of funds and gener al year-end business occupied the Irrigon City Council most of the evening at Its June meet ing. A report on the street oiling contract, which was just com pleted by Percy Jellum of Pen dleton, revealed that total foot ages surfaced were 11,425, and exceeded original estimates which had not considered the radius at the street intersections. Most of the oiling cost is cov ered, by monies from State street fund allocations designated for that purpose, although $1800 had been included toward the cost from the General Fund in the next fiscal year beginning July 1. By using the balance of the contingency, amounting to $1191, left in the General Fund and borrowing the balance ow ing from the City Hall Building Reserve Fund, the total project cost of $9140 can be met. These latter borrowed funds must be repaid from funds received from State,, Street monies. Displays and demonstrations of the newest sprinkler irriga tion equipment will be a fea tured part of Grasslands '71 scheduled for Eugene's Mahlon Sweet Airport. The sprinkler show is sponsored by the Na tional4' Sprinkler Irrigation asso ciation, reports Marvin Shearer, Oregon State University exten sion. Irrigation specialist. For the commercial farmer, this .. means mechanical move systems and sophisticated "sol id 'set" installations. For the homeowner, it means perman ent '"systems operated by time clocks or innovations developed to reduce the "hose moving" chore. Numerous side roll systems, proven adaptable to a wide range of field and soil condit ions over the last 20 years, will be shown, but irrigaton systems applying water while they move will stir "the imagination of the farmers, during the show, Shear er believes. Among these systems will be "travelers" or individual sprink lers with large nozzles discharg ing 300 to 600 gallons per min ute as they are pulled through fields; center pivot systems ro tating around a fixed point while putting up to 1,300 gal Ions per minute on 130 acres of land, and a self-propelled lat eral which moves In a straight line while it irrigates square or rectangular fields. Although the big equipment may catch the eye, there will be plenty in the show for the homeowner, Shearer emphasiz es, including the opportunity to discuss individual home lawn equipment problems with man ufacturers and their representa tives. Persons planning on install ing lawn irrigation systems are invited to bring lot sketches with them and get expert opin ions on material and designs, Shearer adds. MOVING?? It was also noted that some, dam age had resulted from careless maneuvering of vehicles on the streets. It was pointed out that citations could be issued for damage regardless of the cause. Marshal Perry Pummel was appointed as water superintend ent effective July 1. Because of his close association with the system during construction, Mayor Wilson had requested that he serve in that capacity for a time after it was put in to service to assure satisfactory operation and that post con struction obligations were met by the contractor. The City does not have a full time employee. The Council ratified an agree ment between Morrow County and its cities. This intergovern mental association will operate in place of the previously form ed Council of Governments. The Council also approved a request by Marshal Pummel for an additional man to help him police the area during the Lions Club sponsored July 4 rclebra tion.
