BOARDMAN Mr. and Mrs. Kurt Gantenbein went to Port land last week to deliver two helfeq ;o be shipped to Korea. These heifers were donated by Gantenbein and Harold Rash, local dairymen, to Heifer Pro ject, Inc. This Is a self help program for under privileged people-; In nations around the world Each recipient passes on the first offspring from his gift to a needy neighbor. In addit ion to dairy heifers, beef calves, sheep, goats, hogs, rabbits, chickens, ducks, turkeys and geese are also given, depending .on the needs of the area. Rev. A. H. Elshoff, a retired minister, is director of the North west region of Heifer Project, Inc.. His office Is In Portland. Sweetheart Dinner There were 37 present at the annual Sweetheart Dinner of the Boardman Tillicum Club, held' Sunday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Skoubo. Hostesses were Mrs. Ronald Black, Mrs. Bill Bates, Mrs. Dewey West, Jr. and Mrs. Ron Daniels. Out of town guests were Mr. and Mrs. Ray Gronquist of Pen dleton. Others were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bates, Mr. and Mrs. I. M. Docken, Mr. and Mrs. Car roll Donovan, Mr. and Mrs. Rod Flug, Mi", and Mrs. Stan Henk le, Mr.', .'and Mrs. Delmer Hug, Mr. arid Mrs. Rupe Kennedy, Mr. and i Mr?-. Dolores Hilling, Riverside High School sophomore, was crowned queen of the Sweetheart Ball Saturday held at the school. Her escort was Darrel Pummel. Bob Ryan, sophomore, crowned the queen. Princesses and escorts were Donna Pummel and Jerry Mesteth, Ann Gasser and Billee Bedord. and Wanda Jackson and Blaine Johnson. Chaperones for the dance were Mr. and Mrs, Ronald Black, Mr. and Mrs. Del- bert Ball, Mr. and Mrs. Delmer Hug and Kathy Juve, the latter of Hermiston. Music was by the Strawberry Mountain, Hermis ton. New Arrivals Mr. and Mrs. Tom Hilling are the parents of a daughter born Feb. 14 at the Pendleton Com munity Hospital. The baby weighed 10 lb. She had not been named yet at this writing. Mr.' and "Mrs: Marc McGowan of Salem are the parents of a daughter born Feb. 5 in Port land. She weighed 7 lb., 7 oz., and has been named Michelle Lee. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Elvin Ely of Boardman, and Mr. and Mrs. Vern McGow an of Pilot Rock. Mr. and Mrs. Ely went to Salem Sunday to visit their new granddaughter. Co-host esses were Mrs. Pete Peterson Shirley Earwood, Mrs. Don Dow ney, Mrs. Carroll Donovan, Mrs, Arthur Allen and Mrs. Chub Warren. The honoree was assisted in opening her gifts by Laura Rice and Tamara McKenzte. Mrs. Cleve Hinton won the prize in a game and Mrs. Elvin Ely received the door prize. WAC Meeting The Women s Activity Com mittee of Greenfield Grange met Wednesday afternoon of last week at the home of Mrs. Ron aid Black with Mrs. Walter Hayes co-hostess. The club will serve the soil conservation dinner held here Feb. 16. The planning commit tee was Mrs. Black, Mrs. Bill Bates, ' Mrs. Hayes and Mrs, Chub Warren. Mrs. Roy Ball was in charge of the tables. Card party hostesses appoint ed for - the next four weeks were:. Feb. 16, Mrs. Joe Tatone; Feb. 23, Mrs. Arthur Allen; March 2, Mrs. Ball; March 9, Mrs. ' Frank Marlow. The next night 'card ; part will be held Feb. 27, starting with potluck supper at 6:30 p.m. Valentine Party at Garden Club The Boardman Garden Club met at the home of Hazel Mill er Monday night of last week Roll call was answered by tell ing "Why we like our town." A letter was read from the Travelers Rights Council regard ing the Oregon Motorist Infor mation Act of 1971, which is be ing introduced in the present legislature. Plans were made for the an nual family dinner which will be held Feb. 21 at the home of Mrs. Miller at 2 p.m. A Valentine party was held following the meeting with Ha zel Carpenter in charge. Mrs.) Walter Wyss won the prize for the best valentine apron made, and Mrs. Roy Ball and Mrs. Frank Marlow won prizes in an other game. Mrs. Walter Hayes received the door prize. Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Fitzger ald of Encino, Calif, visited last week at the home of Mrs. Fitz gerald's parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Sicard; her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Sicard; and her brother-in-law and siste, Mr. and Mrs. Gunnar Skoubo. Thursday, Frtraarr II. 1971 i Harrison Services At Cascade Locks JV's Sweep Weekend By BOB PLOYHAR After surviving a late Condon Grants Pass, Wllbert H. of Seal Funeral services were held last Saturday in Cascade Locks for Thomas C Harrison, 64, a resident of Boardman the past two years, Who died Feb. '10 at the University of Oregon Med ical School Hospital In Portland after an Illness of, almost a year. Mr. Harrison was born In Can ada April 9, 1906. He had lived in Oregon since 1916. He had been employed by the Oregon Fish Commission, and retired two years ago. lie was a mem ber of the Columbia Gorge Lions Club, Boardman Greenfield Grange, the Rod and Gun Club of Cascade Locks and the Unit ed Church of Christ at Cascade Locks. National School Assembly "Conquering Mt. McKinley on Skis" will be presented in a National School Assembly pro gram at Riverside High School at 8:30 a.m. by Luben Balab anoff, who is a graduate in Art, Physical Education and Law of the University of Sofia, Bulgar ia. While there, he headed sev eral youth and athletic organi zations and was president of the Young Hikers Association, He has been a teacher in phys ical education, art and hand crafts, and was secretary and director of the summer camps for the YMCA. He has been member of championship teams, and was a coach and judge in skiing, basketball, volleyball and soccer. He was honored to be selected as a judge in the recent Olympic Games at Mex ico City. to whip Umatilla, the Baby Mustangs Improved their record to 10-5 with only five games re maining. Led by John Boyer and Allen McCabe, the Baby Mustangs built up a 10 point halftime lead over Condon, only to see it dwindle to 3 before they could get ahold of themselves and edge the Baby Devils 46-41. On ly four of the Heppner boys were able to score in the con test with Boyer getting 18, Mc Cabe 14 and Eckman and Pap- ineau, 7 each. Saturday night, the Umatilla Vikings came to Heppner and forced the Baby Mustangs to come from behind to clinch a 60-53 victory. As the game started out, the taller Umatilla team held the upper hand but the speedy Mustangs turned the tide late in the third quarter and went on to win. Scoring for the Umatilla game was Boyer 26, McCabe 17, Hed man 7, Eckman 5, Papineau 3 and Bergstrom 2. of Portland; and 14 grandchild ren. Interment was in the Cascade Locks Cemetery. A spe cial program will be presented by Mr. and Mrs. A. II. Elshoff of Portland. Mrs. Elshoff Is the president of the Oregon Wom en's Fellowship. She has been director of the women's work In the United Church of Christ churches for over nine years, and was on the staff of the Ha waiian Conference of United Church of Christ. She will speak on 'The United Church of Christ in Hawaii."
