In first downs. Heppner had 14 to Elgin's three. After his teams nrsi game, head coach Ed Hicmstra said he was pleased in spots. "The two defensive ends were terrific," the coach said. "Our overall defense was real good. He singled out the ends, Lee Huson and Matt Murray, along with Dean Wright and Gary Watkins for fine defensive play. While the Mustang offense did not mount much of a drive in the first half. Hiemstra was pleased with the club's second half effort. "Our punting kept us in the hole the first half," the coach said. Named as outstanding play ers for the week were Hall as offensive back, Bill Greenup as offensive lineman, Huson as de fensive lineman and Dean Wright as defensive back. Huson had nine tackles dur ing the contest, with two as sists. Wright had seven with one assist, while Rory Stillman, and Greenup had four apiece. George, Daniels Named to Board Two new members have been named to the Board of Direct ors of the Heppner-Morrow County Chamber of Commerce, it was announced at the meet ing Monday. Elaine George was named to replace Harlan McCurdy, while Ron Daniels will replace Dick Carpenter. Cardinals Lose In Opener, 20-6 One yard Is a long way on the football field. Ask lone High football coach Gordon Meyers. His Cardinals came within that distance of scoring twice last Saturday, but were stopped short. And that made the difference as the lone squad dropped their season's opener to Dufur last Saturday, 20-6, at Dufur. The Cards' oh -so-close scoring attempts both came In the sec ond half, after they had tied the game, then lost the lead again. In tha third nnartpr. a scor ing attempt from the one yard line failed to connect, and Du fur took over. Then with 12 seconds left, lone punter Scott Wilson faked a punt on fourth down and ran, only to be stopped a yard shy of paydirt. Dick Snider scored Ione's only touchdown In the third quarter when three of his mates block ed a Dufur punt and he recov ered the ball in the end zone. That tied the score at 6-6. Dufur had scored about half way through the first period on a five-yard run. "After that, we settled down and played good football," Mey ers said. But a Dufur screen pass good for sixty yards and six points made the score 12-6. Then came the first time lone failed to score from the one. "We had a chance and didn't make it," Meyers said. A fourth down attempt for a first down failed, and on the next play Dufur scored on an end sweep. That set the stage for Wil son's long, but futile, run. "I was pretty encouraged, Meyers said. "We made some mistakes but we all came out a little wiser. "We were in the ball game the whole time," he noted. The Cards face Arlington Fri day on the Honkers' field.
