(Mrs.) Johanne Taylor Heppner, Oregon 20-22p Bill Would Give Fire Protection In Rural Areas A bill Introduced in the United States Senate recently will, if passed, provide federal assistance to states for fire pro tection in rural areas. The measure was introduced by Senator Mark O. Hatfield up on the request of the National Association of State Foresters. Oregon's State Foresters. J. E. Schroeder, upon instructions from the association, contacted Senator Hatfield, who is a mem- ber of the Forestry-Agriculture committee, to explain the pro posal and enlist his support Senator Hatfield is quite fam iliar with this situation in Ore gon. The bill Is desgnated as S 1978. It authorizes the Secretary of Agriculture to cooperate with state foresters in organizing, training and equipping forces for the prevention and suppres sion of structural and wild fires in rural areas. Assistance is to be provided in accordance with cooperative agreements between the federal government and states. To carry out provisions of the act an appropriation of $3,500, 000 Is authorized for the fiscal year endng June 30, 1968. In commenting on the propos ed legislation State Forester Schroeder said that there was a program similar to this operat ed in the United States a few years ago. At that time five model states, of which Oregon was one, were selected to test the value of such a rural fire protection program. This trial run extended for a one-year per iod only with funds made avail able by the United States Forest Service through the Office of Civilian Defense. Schroder felt that the pro gram's results in Oregon were good, since Oregon has a large amount of rural lands too scat tered to justify the type of pro tection provided by forest pro tection agencies. He said a nub ber of other states had similar predicaments, hence his associ ation endorsed the proposed leg islation. Students Reminded Of Need for Exams Parents of prospective first and ninth grade public school stu dents are reminded of the need for physical and dental exam inations for these students, as required by Oregon School Law. The completed forms are to be presented at the beginning of the fall school term, according to the Oregon State Board of Health. Examinations done dur ing the summer months will be valid in the fall. Parents are urged to see their doctor and dentist and have the required examinations done early, ac cording to Mrs. Lowell Chally, R. N., Morrow County Health Department. Oregon Pupil Medical Record or "Goldenrod" forms may be obtained at the private physic ian's office, or at the Morrow County Health Departm e n t Completed forms are to be pre sented at the school at the time of entrance, or mailed to the Health Department in Heppner, Box 662. In addition, first graders must present a birth certificate. Ap plication forms are available in the Health Department or will be mailed upon request. Scholastic Press Honors Two Girls Two from Heppner High school were aong the 249 high school seniors in Oregon who have been honored by the Ore gon Scholastic Press for out standing work in journalism representing 89 schools. They are Martha Peck and Marsha Sow ell. The seniors were nominated by their schools in May to re ceive Eric W. Allen newspaper awards and George S. Turnbull yearbook awards from the press organization which is affiliated with the University of Oregon School of Journalism. There were 57 more awards given this year than last year, and 15 more schools participat ed. Funeral Services Held for L. H. Case Funeral servces for Luclan H.
