July 13. 1967 Mary Swanson, Daughter Of Pioneers, Dies at Age 83 Br KATHERINE UNDSTHOM ' IONE Mrs. Mary Louise Swanson, 83, a long-time resi dent of lone and a member of a prominent pioneer family, pass ed away on Saturday, July 8, at Tioneer Memorial hospital in Heppner following a lingering illness. Born on May 14. 18S4 at Be lota, Calif., Mrs. Swanson was the twin daughter of Frank A. and Anna Louise Lundell. Her twin brother, Oscar L. Lundell died at his home In lone on February 14, 1964. She came to Oregon by cov ered wagon with her parents, one sister, and five brothers in the fall of 1SS7. The family homcsteaded in the Gooseberry area of Morrow county, where the children attended the rural school. She was confirmed in 1898 at Valby Lutheran church in Gooseberry and has been an ac tive member since. On Mav 1, 1904, she was mar ried to John Emil Swanson, who proceeded her in death in 1943. Thev were the second couple to marrv in the newly constructed Valby Church. Mr. and Mrs. Swanson home steaded in the Morgan area and later moved to lone, where he was manager of Farmers Ele vator Co. and Morrow County! Grain Growers. Mrs. Swanson was chosen a Morrow Countv Mother of the Year in 1959. With the excep tion of four years spent in Ida- j ho, her entire life was lived in j Morrow county. She was an active and devot-. ed church member, having dual membership in Valby Lutheran and the United Church of Christ in lone. She was a member of the first Congregational Church in lone and was a deaconness when the lone Cooperative Church was formed by the mer ger of three local churches. Af ter serving as deaconness for many years, with the institut ion of the lone United Church of Christ, she was elected an hon orary deaconness, which posit ion she held at the time of her death. member of BunchgTass Rebekah j Lodge No. 91 and was treasurer! of that organization for the last 17 years. She had received the Degree of Chivalry in Rebekah. She was also a member of Lo cust Chapter No. 119, Order of the Eastern Star, and had serv- ed as chaplain for several years. Survivors include two sons, Garland L. of lone and Norman E. of Portland; two daughters, Mrs. Elmo tEleanor A.t McMil lan of Salem and Mrs. Adon (Eva M.) Hamlett of lone; one brother. Ernest R. Lundell of I lone; 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the United Church of Christ on Tuesday morning, Julv 11, with the Rev. Walter B. Crowell of ficiating. Interment was in High View Cemetery. Mrs. Paul Tews was organist and Mrs. Fred Hoskins Jr., sang. Pallbearers were Mrs. Swan son's grandsons: Norman Clark, William, Gerald, Dennis E., John and James. Young grand sons Thomas and Richard Ham lett were honorary pallbearers. Contributions may be made to the cancer fund in her memory. and family have returned from a vacation spent at Port An geles, Wn., where they visited their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. David McBath and family. While there, the Nichols' daughter, Mary left to begin her training with the Women's Marine Corps. Cassie Chapel celebrated her eleventh birthday recently with a slumber party. The guests were taken to Heppner to the drive-in for supper and then came home and spent the night in the camper. The next day swimming was enjoyed by all. Those attending were Doris Me Cabe, Marcie Linnell, Mary Pat and Joan McElligott, and Kar en Crowell. Court Proceedings June. 1967 Order: Refunding excessive taxes, re Gerald Swaggart, dat ed 6 7 67. Exp 2o.6o has returned home from tho University of Oregon Medical School after a six weeks stay. She is improving satisfactorily. Mrs. Edith Niehoson, who un derwent major surgery in Pen dleton recently, was able to leave the hospital on Sunday. She is convalescing at the home of Mr. and Mrs. F. T. Martin. Mrs. Roy A. Lindstrom had word last week of the death of Peter Wolfe of Toledo, Ohio. He received fatal injuries in a mo tor scooter accident. Mr. and Mrs. Lindstrom visited her cous ins, Mr. and Mrs. Wolfe, in June on a trip to the eastern states. Mrs. Wolfe will be remembered here as the former Sandra Buh raan, daughter of Mrs. Harold Buhman and the late Mr. Bun man of Grants Pass. Mr. Buh man formerly taught music in the Heppner schools. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Tews have returned from a trip to Kindred, N. D., where they had the pleas ure of attending the fortieth wedding anniversary party of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Trangsrud. All the couple's children were home for the oc casion. Mr. and Mrs. Leo Crabtree and Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Lind strom have returned from a suc cessful fishing trip to East Lake. The L. A. McCabes were not able to go as reported last week, but other friends there were Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Myers of Portland. Mr. Gorger has his own travel agency and Susan will be employed there. Mr. and Mrs. William Nichols Winter Taking Reserve Training Herman Winter, a captain in the Marine Reserves, left Satur day for his annual two weeks' summer training. He went to Yakima, Wash., and from there continued to Twentynine Palms, Calif, for the training. Winter, who is Morrow coun ty district attorney and presi dent of the Heppner-Morrow county Chamber of Commerce, expects to be back in Heppner on July 24. Sowell Policeman At Santa Barbara W. L. (Bill) Sowell, formerly of Heppner, writes, in renewing his subscription to The Gazette Times, that he is working as a policeman for the University of California at Santa Barbara. "Things are quiet now with just summer school," he said. "Things will pick up soon. We expect around 14,000 students, so we will be busy. "Needless to say, I really en joy getting all the local news," hp added. "I reallv miss all the folks there, but things are going good here." Stephen Lindstrom Makes Dean's List Stephen R. Lindstrom of lone was named to Pacific Lutheran University's Dean's List for out standing academic achievement during the spring semester. Lindstrom, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy W. Lindstrom of lone, will be a senior this fall at PLU, majoring in political sci ence. Students on the Dean's List have achieved better than a 3.3 grade point average for the sec ond semester of the school year. f!ew back from Los Angeles to be with his father. Mr. Buschke's daughter. Mrs. Roy Erner of Al bany and her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Peck of Albany are also here to visit him. Rev. James H. Rover of Wood burn Retirement Estates deliv ered the sermon on Sunday morning at the United Church of Christ. A coffee hour followed the service. Guests of the Edwin Kessler's were his parents. Rev. and Mrs. Jacob Kessler, who came home with him Sunday afternoon and stayed until Tuesday morning. Mr. Kessler is staying with his parents while attending sum mer school at Walla Walla Col lege. The Kesslers camped at Cutsforth Park two days dur ing the visit. Mr. Kessler's sis ter and family spent the week end at lone, Wn., a logging com munity, with about a hundred more residents than lone, Ore gon has. Mr. and Mrs. Al Brazell ar rived on Saturday at her pater nal home. He went back to his job at Moscow, Idaho on Mon day, but Mrs. Brazell plans to spend harvest here. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Pettyjohn of The Dalles were week-end guests of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Lindsay. Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Lun dell drove to Missoula, Mont, last weeke end to visit with Mr. and Mrs. Francis Stack and get acquainted with their new grand daughter, Dara Christine. Mrs. Lundell stayed for a longer vis it. Relatives here for the funeral services of Mrs. Arvilla Swan son last Thursday were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Lundell, Mr. and Mrs. William Lundell and fam ily, and Mr. and Mrs. Merle Lundell and family of Milwau kie; Mrs. Walter Christiansen of Eugene; Mr. and Mrs. Fran cis Rea, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Rea, Mr. and Mrs. James Mar tin, Mrs. Esper Hansen, and Norman Swanson of Portland; Gilbert Petteys of Pendleton; and Mr. and Mrs. John Turner of Baker. Mrs. Algott Lundell of Port land visited last week with Mrs. Oscar Lundell and was here for the services for Mrs. Arvilla Swanson. Twenty-five members and friends of the Heppner Nazar- ene Church gathered at the td win Kessler home in lone Thurs day evening for a barbecue and homemade ice cream. Rev. and Mrs. G. Nikander of Heppner were special guests for the evening and he gave a short de votional message. Cots Collide at Intersection Two drivers escaped serious in jury last Thursday afternoon when their cars collided at the northern entrance to lone near the Ekstrom Ranch. Mrs. Wil lard French had stopped at the intersection and was just leav ing lone and Mrs. Amanda Du vall was just turning into lone when the collision occurred. The French car was completely de molished and the Duvall car was damaged on the front. Mrs. Phill Emert took Mrs. French to Pendleton to a phys ician.
