The Traffic Safety Division of the Oregon Department of Mo tor Vehicles reminds drivers to check the condition of their tires for winter driving safety. Tests show that tires with good treads provide better traction on slippery pavements. For severe snow and ice conditions, how ever, nothing can take the place of reinforced tire chains, espec ially for climbing slippery hills and getting through deep snow. The first rule for safe winter driving, according to the Traf fic Safety Division of the Ore gon Department of Motor Ve hicles, is to "get the feel" of the road so that you know for sure how slippery It really is. You can do this while driving slow ly by trying your brakes or "gunning"' the motor a little when no other traffic is near. (Then adjust your speed accord ingly.
