HEPPNER GAZETTE 19 Wheal Farms Grow Mora Club For Seed Purpose Br GENE WINTERS Morrow County Agent Nearlv f acres ot the new Moro Club winter wheat will have been field inspected this week on 19 Morrow County wheat farms. Inspecting the fields are mem bers of the Oregon State Univer sity and seed certification staff. Growers applying for certifi cation inspection are Frank An derson, Wilbur Worden. Oren Braee. Herman Blettell. MoF.111 cott Brothers. Nelson Brothers, Llovd Howton. Gene Majeski and C. K. Feck. Also Mel v in Mover. Don Evans. Ken Turner, Fritz Cutsforth and Ken Cuts forth Also O. V. Cutsforth. Pat Cutsforth, Marquardt Ranch and Farl McCabo. Fields are inspected for var ietal puritv as well as freedom from other grains and weeds. Seed samples will be taken af ter harvest for analysis at the OSL' seed laboratory. Only after the stand passes the field in spection and the seed meets the required standards will the seed he tagged as certified. Irrigation Fair Will Show Latest Sprinkler Equipment A sprinkler irrigation fair will he held in conjunction with the 1966 Irrigation Field Day near Lebanon, August 3 and 4. Morrow County producers in terested in the latest develop ments in labor saving and mechani z a t i o n of sprinkler equipment should plan to at tend the "fair." There will be 12 demonstrations and 15 com mercial exhibits by major man ufacturers in the United States. Only at events such as this one can you really compare the equipment available and decide the one best suited for your use under your conditions. With " the relatively high in itial investment in sprinkler equipment (S130 per acre and up for example) and the dif ficulty in getting labor has greatly increased the develop ment of boom and automatic move sprinklers. Crop Science Meeting Brings Out Late Wheat Research ! The Western Society of Crop Science meeting, held the last of June jointly on the campus es of Washington State Univer sity and the University of Ida ho, brought the writer up to date on the latest developments in crop research in the Pacific Northwest. At this session crop scientists reported on their research re sults. We hope to report on those later which may be of in terest to Morrow County farm ers. The amount of wheat breed ing underway at Moscow and at Pullman is staggering. We can look forward, no doubt, to new varieties to meet the production and marketing problems ahead. A visit with Dr. Vogel at W.S.U. and Dr. Pope at Idaho to their respective plots demon strated the extent of their work. Dr. Pope is devoting much of his time improving the good wheat varieties by removing some of their particular defects to make them better wheats through the use of bade cross ing. Objectives have been to in elude disease resistance, im prove type as to straw and to improve quality variation. Tetanus Boosters Advised by Wilcox News comes from the Oregon State Board of Health that the first person to contact tetanus during lSVtf was a 42-year-old woman in I'matilla county. She had only a small cut yet it was large enough to admit the deadly disease. Symptoms began to' appear in about a week and the patient was giv en dosages oi numan nper immune globulin as part of her I treatment. She recovered, but ' some victims of tetanus or lock- jaw do not. Last vear one of the four per sons ill with tetanus in Oregon died. In general fatalities ave rage more than 50 per cent. Best protection against this disease is immunization, and everyone should have a booster shot at least every four years, according to Dr. Richard H. Wil cox, state health officer. Gooseberry 4-H Club Donates Barrels The Gooseberry 4-H Livestock club held a meeting at the Don McElligott home June 24 at 7:30. , We painted some barrels which we donated to 4-H Summer Camp and Morrow County Fair. In our business meeting we dis cussed what some of the boys ' got at The Dalles show. Mr. I Carlson told us some things we 'could do for a demonstration. ! Phil Carlson gave us his dem ' onstration on rope ends. I We met again July 8 at the ' Louis Carlson home. Kathleen I McElligott and Phil Carlson went over their demonstrations which they will give Sunday, July 17. Demonstration Day. Irriqon Survey Due On Water, Sewage Mayor Chester Wilson of Irri- gon has announced mat tne Oregon State Board of Health and the Morrow County Health Department will conduct a house-to-house survey on water supply and sewage disposal systems in Irrigon during tne week of July 26. W. B. Culham, district sani tarian, Pendleton district office, State Board of Health, will be the survey officer. Mavor Wilson asks all resi dents to give full cooperation to the surveying officer. Plan Demonstrations Members of the Little Sisters 4-H club met July 6 at the home of Doris McCabe to prac tice their demonstrations for the county fair. We have two team demonstrations, and two individual demonstrations. During the vacation week they visited in Baker and in Prine ville with Mr. and Mrs. Wade Weatherman and family. Mrs. Allen Guinn took her daughter Alana to Portland last Monday where Alana attended a cheer leaders school at Lew is and Clark college. Shellie Guinn is in The Dalles with Mr. and Mrs. William Bell and Kelle Guinn is in Sacramento, Calif., visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Jack Dyer and family. Mr. and Mrs. Rod Hastings were business visitors to Pen dleton on Monday. During the vacation week they visited in Grants Pass, Wallowa and Ba ker. Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Reid became the parents of a dau ghter on July 4 at The Dalles hospital. She weighed 6 lb., 11 oz. and has been named Dor ena Lynn. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Dale Sinclair of Spray, Mrs. Frank Hunsucker of Spray and Robert Reid of Kinzua. Mrs. W. C. Freeman and her mother Mrs. Mary Williams of Spray went to The Dalles Mon day for a medical checkup for Mrs. Williams. Visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Herschel Murdock over the Fourth were Mrs. Fred Casey, Sr., of Brainerd, Minn., and Mr. and Mrs. Herb Phillips of Yak ima, Wash. Mrs. Casey is Mrs. Murdocks mother. Also visiting there on Wednesday were Mrs. Murdocks niece and family, the Ron Howes of Roseburg. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph James took Mr. and Mrs. Tom School craft to Pendleton last Tues day where Mrs. Schoolcraft took the plane to Redlands, Calif, to visit her mother, Mrs. Lydia Wisely and to attend a family reunion there. Mrs. Herschel Murdock took Mrs. Frank DeMerrit to Arling ton Wednesday where Mrs. De Merrit took a bus to Portland where she had medical care. Mr. DeMerrit met her bus on Friday evening and brought her home. Mr. and Mrs. John Hawk and family went to Prineville last Sunday to visit with Mr. and Mrs. Willard Wilhelm and fam ily. Mr. and Mrs. Orrin Hoagland of Portland were Thursday and Friday visitors with Mr. and Ms. Jack Sitton, Women Reminded Of Cake Contest As county fair time Is rap idly approaching, women In the nine Eastern Oregon Wheat counties are reminded of the cake baking contest sponsored by the Oregon Wheat Growers League. Prizes In each county will be $5, $3, and $2 with the winner eligible to compete for the $UX' award in the state con test during the League's conven tion next December in Portland. Contestants must be women or men over 21. with profession al bakers excluded and must he a resident of his county. Each contestant must use the same cake and icing recipe and the cake must be exhibited and judged at their respective coun ty fairs. Additional details and the recipe can be found In the fair premium book. Mrs. Gene Winters and child ren. Stephanie and Pat have re turned from a trip East to visit members of her family. They went to Minneapolis by train and were able to visit with the families of five of Mrs. Wint ers' brothers and her mother. The Winters family then went to Minot, S. D where they stay ed with Mrs. Winters' sister and her husband and children and where they met Gene Winters who drove from Heppner.
