Irrigation Fair Will Show
Latest Sprinkler Equipment
A sprinkler irrigation fair will
he held in conjunction with the
1966 Irrigation Field Day near
Lebanon, August 3 and 4.
Morrow County producers in
terested in the latest develop
ments in labor saving and
mechani z a t i o n of sprinkler
equipment should plan to at
tend the "fair." There will be
12 demonstrations and 15 com
mercial exhibits by major man
ufacturers in the United States.
Only at events such as this
one can you really compare the
equipment available and decide
the one best suited for your use
under your conditions.
With " the relatively high in
itial investment in sprinkler
equipment (S130 per acre and
up for example) and the dif
ficulty in getting labor has
greatly increased the develop
ment of boom and automatic
move sprinklers.
Crop Science Meeting Brings
Out Late Wheat Research !
The Western Society of Crop
Science meeting, held the last
of June jointly on the campus
es of Washington State Univer
sity and the University of Ida
ho, brought the writer up to
date on the latest developments
in crop research in the Pacific
Northwest.
At this session crop scientists
reported on their research re
sults. We hope to report on
those later which may be of in
terest to Morrow County farm
ers. The amount of wheat breed
ing underway at Moscow and at
Pullman is staggering. We can
look forward, no doubt, to new
varieties to meet the production
and marketing problems ahead.
A visit with Dr. Vogel at
W.S.U. and Dr. Pope at Idaho
to their respective plots demon
strated the extent of their work.
Dr. Pope is devoting much of
his time improving the good
wheat varieties by removing
some of their particular defects
to make them better wheats
through the use of bade cross
ing. Objectives have been to in
elude disease resistance, im
prove type as to straw and to
improve quality variation.

Tetanus Boosters
Advised by Wilcox
News comes from the Oregon
State Board of Health that the
first person to contact tetanus
during lSVtf was a 42-year-old
woman in I'matilla county.
She had only a small cut yet
it was large enough to admit
the deadly disease. Symptoms
began to' appear in about a
week and the patient was giv
en dosages oi numan nper
immune globulin as part of her I
treatment. She recovered, but '
some victims of tetanus or lock-
jaw do not.
Last vear one of the four per
sons ill with tetanus in Oregon
died. In general fatalities ave
rage more than 50 per cent.
Best protection against this
disease is immunization, and
everyone should have a booster
shot at least every four years,
according to Dr. Richard H. Wil
cox, state health officer.
