HEPPNER GAZETTE Vacation School Has Full Week "Happy Differences" was the song theme which united all the morning classes of the Va cation Bible School held at the Methodist Church from Monday, June 13, through Friday. June 17. The study theme, "World of Many Differences," was treated In many different ways by the different classes, at least two of which did some "different" cooking. On Sunday, June 19, the Va cation Bible School children presented a program for their parents usine the regular open ing exercises, flag salute and special songs. Co-chairmen of the school were Mrs. James Hilderbrand and Mrs. Jay Wheelhouse, who was also director. About 53 children attended throughout the session. Teaching the kindergart e n children were Mrs. James Hil derbrand and Mrs. Ron Hague wood, helped by Leslie Meador, Georgiana McDaniel and Pam Hughes. Primary classes were under the direction of Mrs. Bruce Grif fith helped bv Mrs. Harold Er win and daughter Shlrlee. Juniors were taught by Mrs. Lvnn Pearson and Mrs. Gene Pierce, and the intermediate class was directed by Mrs. Jack Krieger with the help of Mar garet Green. Mrs. Sam Miller taught mus ic and her daughter. Sara help ed with games. Mary Pierce and Debbie Young were in hin nt rhilit rare. Marcls Young helped with child care and also in the kindergarten de partment Plan Demonstrations Th Ruralettes had a 4-H meeting June 15 at Mrs. Rol and Bergstrom's home. We fill ed out our standard report forms and talked about our demonstrations that we will give for the fair. Mary McEl ligott served us refreshments. We had two visitors, Mrs. L. A. McCabe and Mrs. Louis Carl son. There were six members present. June 23. 1966 Dixons Travel East For College Services, Visit Former Parish Rev. and Mrs. Dixon, on vaca tion from his pastorate at the Heppner Methodist church, tra veled east to attend the grad uation of their daughter, Shawn, from Asbury College in Wilmore, Ky. on June 1. They also visited there with Rev. and Mrs. Walter Gilliland of Crry, Pa., parents of Charles Gilliland, to whom Sharon will be married In the Heppner church on August 21. Daughters' Sharon and Marti joined then parents on a trip north to Logan, Ohio, and to Hig gins Lake, Michigan, where they visited cU-se friends. Former par ishioners at Breckenridge, Mich igan, honoied them with a church reception during their visit there on Sunday. June 12. They return ed home from their three-weeks trip on Friday. Henrys Vacation On $100 Budget Taking a hundred dollars and their children. Jay. 7, and Mary. 9, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Henry set out June 12 to find out how long they could vacation In Ore gon on that amount of money. They planned to stay in motels and prime requisite was that each motel have a swimming pool. They began their trip by going south through Central Oregon then visited Lava Butte, Fort Rock, and Crater Lake. From Crater Lake they drove through Roseburg to Coquille on the coast and then followed the coast northward and returned 1 trt Hnnnur via Portland In Portland they visited the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry and saw the famous Wenatchee Youth Circus which was a high spot of their trip. According to Bob they had a fine time, were treated well ev erywhere, the weather was won derful and they came home with six cents left over, Friday, June 17. The fact that out-ol -season rates were still In use at the beach resorts helped. Three from County Graduate at U of 0 Three from Morrow County were graduated at the spring commencement exercises of the University of Oregon, Sunday, June 12, at Eugene. Linda Darlene Van Winkle received a Bachelor of Science in Speech. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William J. Van Winkle of Lexington. James Michael Healv receiv ed a Bachelor of Science degree. He is the son of James M. Healy og Heppner. Mrs. James Healy also re ceived a Bachelor of Science de gree. She is the former Feme M. Albert, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Albert of Union. The younger ones were entertained at the home of Mrs. Milton Morgan. Teachers for the school were kindergarten, Mrs. Milton Mor gan, assisted bv Mrs, alter Roberts, Terry O'Connor and Taunva Tucker; first and sec ond, Mrs. Robert Rietmann, as sisted by Kathy Holtz. Instruct or for third and fourth grades of International porcupine rac was Mrs. Joel Engelman. assist- tng and final events are held ed by Bonnie Kessel. and for fifth and sixth. Mrs. James Bar- nett, assisted bv Pam Proudfoot. About 50 young people partlc ipated in the classes. The study theme was "The Church". The special project this year was mounting Christmas cards on Art nntwr t, he ustvt in mission work in Venezuela. Part of the children's daily offering money will be used to pay postage for mailing these. On the last day of school, children brought sack lunches. Others helping with the school were Mrs. fete cannon who prepared the refreshments, and Mrs. Dick Sherer, secretary. Ter esa Tucker, inaricne riamieu. and Jov Beggs were in charge of the games. The vacation school planning committee this year was Mrs. Art Undstrom, chairman, Mrs. Lewis Halvorsen and Mrs. E. M. Baker. Mrs. Lindsay Kincaid had charge of the music. There will be no more Sunday School classes until September 12. Mrs. Roy W. Lindstrom is In Portland this week to attend the Eastern Star Grand Chap ter. She is chairman of the Cre dentials Committee. Mrs. Bill Rietmann has word from her mother, Mrs. Roy Hurst of Arlington, that she is enjoy ing a visit to the British Isles in company with her sister, Mrs. Lena Somerfelt of Portland, and her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John W. Krebs of Arlington. They plan to visit Germany and the Scandinavian countries. Bowling Team in Tournament The Morgan Elevator Bowling team attended the State Tour nament of Champions at Mil waukee last week-end. Those attending were Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Ball, Mr. and Mrs. Dave Barnett, Mr. and Mrs. Don Eu banks, Lindsay Kincaid, Bob Hubbard and Larrv Rietmann. Gordon Meyers left Monday to attend summer school at EOCE at La Grande. Virgil Morgan and Pat McEI- ligott returned Saturday from attending Boys' State at Salem. Wallace Matthews visited Sat urday night at the Francis Ely home in Salem and on Sunday brought his daughters, Berniece and Deniece home from attend ing Girls' State. Mr. and Mrs. Berl Akers, Jr. and Mrs. Akers' son Bob and her sister Joyce Carlow depart ed Saturday for their home in Pine Ridge, S. D. after a visit here with relatives. Mrs. Fran k 1 i n Ely, lone fourth grade teacher, is taking a summer course at Portland State. Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Linds trom are visiting in Portland this week. Mr. and Mrs. Gene Rietmann and son traveled t o Nampa, Idaho the past week-end. Mrs. Rietmann and Chris stayed for a longer visit with her father, I George Mumford. Hams Are Parents of Daughter Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Hams are the parents of a daughter, Leslie Kay, born in Pendleton June 16. She weighed 9 lb., 1 oz. and joins two brothers. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Vester Hams and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Pettyjohn Sr. of lone. Great grandparents are E. R. Lundell of lone, Noah Pettyjohn of Missouri, Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Bothwell of Heppner, and Mr. and Mrs. James Hams of Hard man. Eugene Dockter who is work ing with the Forest Service this summer is stationed at Bull Prairie. Karen Hams, valedictorian of the class of 1966, enrolled in Western Business University in Portland on Monday. Stephen Lindstrom went to Tupper Ranger Station Monday to attend a "fire school" in preparation for his summer work with the Forest Service. Everett Holstein and family departed Tuesday for Akron, Colo. Mr. Holstein has been principal of the lone school for the past two years.
