HEPPNER GAZETTE - Jessie A. Smith Dies Suddenly At Home Here Mrs. George (Jessie Anna) Smith died unexpectedly at her home in Heppner Wednesday, May 25. She would have been 75 years of ace on June 3. Funeral services will be Sat urday, May 28, 2:00 p.m, at the Methodist church, with the Rev. Al Bosch ee officiating. In terment will follow in Heppner Masonic Cemetery, with Swee ney Mortuary in charge of the arrangements. Jessie Anna Carter was born June 3, 1891. in Ruby Valley, Nevada. She was the daughter of John and Anna Holt Carter. When a very small child, she came with her parents to Mon ument, where she grew to womanhood. She was married to George Smith In Monument on June 30. 1910. They made their home there until moving to Heppner In 1944, where they have resided since. Mrs. Smith was an active member of the Heppner Meth odist church and of the Worn ens Society of Christian Serv ice. Survivors include her hus band, George; two daughters, Mrs. Sylvia McDaniel. Heppner; Mrs. Helen Jones, Glen Burnie, Maryland; one son James R. Smith of Pendleton; one broth er. Melvin Carter of San Fran cisco, Calif.; six grandchildren and sewn great-grandchildren. Illness Takes Maud Robison, 84 Memorial services were held Monday. May 23. for Mrs. Maud Alma Robison. 84. in the Swee ney Mortuary ChapeL The Rev. Al Boschee officiated at the 2:00 p.m. service. Vault inter ment followed in Heppner Ma sonic cemetery- Mrs. Robison died in Pioneer Memorial hospital on Friday, May 20, after being in ill health the past year. She was a mem ber of Sans Souci Rebekah Lodge and of the Christian Church. She had lived in south Morrow county and in Heppner most of her liie. The daughter of Wesley Boo her and Jennie, Stevens, she was born in Dakota City, Nebraska, October 7, 1881. Survivors include one daugh ter, Mrs. Debbie McDaniel of Hardman; two sons, Gerald Boo her of La Grande and Rich ard Robison of Heppner; three grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Benson Honored at Party Br VIRGINIA KELSO KINZUA Miss Vlckl Benson was the guest of honor at a bridal shower Sunday afternoon at the grade school. The many lovely gifts were arrayed on a table centered with a bride doll flanked with white wedding bells. The individual tables were also centered with gaily dressed dolls. Bingo was play ed with prizes being won by Norma Stephens. Ada Schell, and Pat Mi-Minn. Vicki then opened her gifts assisted by Betty Robinson and Becky Schroeder. after which a specially decorated cake was cut by Mrs. Stanley Benson and served with ice cream to the guests. Hostesses for the occasion were Dorothy Walker. Hildred Hines, Lucille Bird, nad Mar garet McConnell. Miss Benson will be married on Saturday. June 18, to Ken neth Miller of Fossil at the Kinzua Community church. Visiting here and attending baccalaureate Sunday evening were Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Mudd and family and Mrs. Troy Carey and daughter of Rich land. Wash. Spending the weekend in Spray with Mr. and Mrs. Wil liam Chapman and attending the Spray rodeo were Mr. and Mrs. Ray Rector and son Jeff. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Oyler and Miss Midge Murray. Mr. and Mrs. Arden Tripp and family spent the week-end in Redmond visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Sargent and Mr. and Mrs. Zolen Tripp and family. When they came home they brought Jimmy Sargent with them for a few days visit. Mrs. Robert Reavis and Mrs. Jack Ball were business visitors in Heppner Thursday. While there they visited at the Pio neer Memorial hospital with Mrs. Lucille Clark who had surgery there last Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Catlin of The Dalles were recent vis itors with Mr. and Mrs. Jack Sitton. Visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Mallaroy this past week were Mrs. Mallaroy's parents. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Reichelt and Ronald of St. Maries. Ida ho. Business visitors to The Dal les on Thursday were Mrs. Paul Oyler and Miss Sharon Kelso. Everett Stewart went to Long Creek Thursday to attend his son's graduation from high school. Mrs. Stewart and the family will move to Kinzua this week. The Doubledeck card club was entertained at the home of Margaret McConnell on Wed nesday evening with Virginia Sitton as hostess. High was won by Vi Slinkard, low by Vonnie Browning and floating by Helen Wright and Vi Slink ard. Others playing were Ada SchelL Marge Asher, Kathryn Flack, Marj Boring, LaVina Connor, Lily May Nistad, and Virginia Kelso. Visiting at the Sam Howell home last week-end were Mr. and Mrs. Louis Miller and Dor othy of Kimberly, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Howell and Paddy of Monument, Mr. and Mrs. Roger Ashmead, Lora and Sarah of Mayville and Doris Ashmead of FossiL Mr. and Mrs. Red Hulett went to Walla Walla last Sunday where they participated in a bowling tournament. A special meeting of the Camp 5 Womens club was call ed by President Betty Murdock, on Wednesday. It was voted at that time to cook and serve a buffet dinner for the Eastern Oregon Logging Co. Safety As sociation at a time to be an nounced later. Chairman for this is to be Lola Ferrel. The Home Extension meeting was held Wednesday evening at the Camp 5 Community Hall with Chairman Betty Murdock in charge. Seven were present to hear the lesson on wills which was presented by Betty Murdock and Carol Norris. Mr. and Mrs. Hap Gregg of John Day were Saturday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Sharp. They also visited with other friends at Camp 5. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Norris, Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Fulton and daughter Sandra of Fossil were in Bend Saturday as delegates to the Northwest District Coun cil Mrs. Rusty Medlock and Ran dy were in Heppner Wednesday for business and shopping. The Home Extension meeting on "Wills" will be held this Thursday, May 26, at the grade Cleaners Mrs. Zehner Gets Br LoVELLE PARTLOW IRRIGON Mrs. Elmer Zehner was specially honored at the Grand Council Fire in Stanfleld Friday evening, when she was presented with the "Waken pin. the highest National Camp Fire award given to a group leader. This award is given on ly to leaders who have served five years and who have given distinctive service and coopera tion to their council over and above their leadership and cre ative program guidance. Mrs. Zehner has been a lead er for five years in Oregon Trail Council and has been a contin uous member of Camp Fire Girls since Joining as a young girl. She has volunteered her valuable servcle to Day Camp for three years as a counselor and has served as Blue Bird Training Chairman on the West District Committee. Council Grants 14 Building Permits At the Anrll meeting of the city council, the Heppner of ficials agreed that they should run a small ad In the Gazette Times to Inform people about the ordinance requiring build ing permits for alterations and remodeling when these pro jects exceed a cost of $l(X). At the meeting of the coun cil May 2. the city dads had evidence of the value of ad vertising. There were 14 appli cations for building permits.
