This and a red carna tlon corsage were personally presented to each mother. Serv ing of delirious fancy cookies and punch climaxed the enjoy able and memorable afternoon. Methodist Women Hear of India Art, Elect WSCS Officers Mrs. Jack Krleger discussed present day India briefly, and showed sound slides entitled, "Christ In the Art of IndU" at the regular meeting of the Methodist Women's Society of Christian Service on Wednesday evening. PH. 676-9200 177 MAIN STm HEPPNER Highly Successful First Season Stirs Golden Age Interest Recognizing the need for so cial fellowship for persons In their "golden years", an orga nized club was started last fall and has shown constantly In creasing Interest and attend ance through Its first season. The Heppner Golden Age Club offers to its average attendance of 3T to 40 persons a fine out let of fun and activity, which are so often deprived those In later yean after their families have crown. Also, It offers the opportunity for the older "new comers" to become acquainted with others with common inter ests In or around the commu nity. The club, sponsored as a serv ice project by the SoroptimLst Club, has met bi monthly, on the first and third Tuesday eve nings. Meetings are always op en to visitors and anyone 50 years of ace or older who wish es to Join is welcomed. At the meeting this week It was de cided to meet once each month, on the second Tuesday evening, during the three summer months of June, July and Aug ust. New officers will take over leadership of the club, and will get an active program going again in the fall. Officers elected Tuesday night were Mrs. Huston Lesley of Hardman. and Mrs. Carl Mc Danlel, Heppner, co-chairmen, and Mrs. Marlorle Wordcn, secretary-treasurer. Meetings have been in All Saints Episcopal parish hall, with the Soroptlmists taking care of rental expenses. Each meeting starts with a bountiful potluck dinner at 7:00 p.m., fol lowed by varied forms of en tertainment including bingo, pi nochle, bridge and other table games, square dancing, and special musical entertainment Those attending are always as sured a good time, If one should come for nothing more than to visit with old friends, or to make new ones. There are no dues, but small contributions are accepted for incidental expenses. The "golden agcrs" have been mooting regularly since its or ganizational meeting last Oc tober 13. Valued assistance was given by the neighboring Herm lston Golden Age club, when Mrs. Olyn Hodge, organizer of the Hermlston club, and Mrs. John Jackson, club secretary, made trips to Heppner to help promote interest and tell of their own successes and growth. Several from here also visited meetings of the Hermlston club. Frank Turner was also among those Instrumental In promoting Interest In the Heppner club. Mrs. Wavel Wilkinson, chair man of this year's Suroptimlst service obje c 1 1 v e s committee, served as temporary chairman. Mrs. Marjorie Worden was sel ected as Its first regular chair man. Succeeding her for the past three months has been Mrs. Sadie Parrlsh, assisted by Mrs. Earl Gilliam, vice chair man, and Mrs. Nora Turner, secretary-treasurer. The sponsoring club feels that much can yet be accomplished bv the "eolden acers" and looks forward to helping It achieve its own complete inde pendence next year, providing happiness for those In its first service horizon the aged. District 6 Auxiliary Units Hold Meeting Department president of the American Legion Auxiliary Mrs. Colleen Goger, The Dalles, vis ited District 6 units in Pendle ton and La Grande, Friday and Saturday, on her second com plete tour ot the state during her term as department presi dent. She was accompanied to her Eastern Oregon visitations by Mrs. Hazel Hamlin, Dist 6 president Following a potluck dinner In Pendleton at the Vert Little Theater, Mrs. Goger reported on her activities during the past year that have included travel ing over 15,000 miles through out the state and nation. Rep resentatives from auxiliary un its in Athena, Heppner, lone, Hermlston, Milton Freewater and Pendleton were on hand for the dinner-meeting. A no-host luncheon was held Saturday at the Sacajewa Inn In La Grande with unit mem bers present from Enterprise, lmbler, Baker, Wallowa, Elgin, Union, Joseph and La Grande. One of the many auxiliary projects reported on by Mrs. Goger, Included the donation of more than 3,000 two-pound tins of homemade cookies, prepared bv women throughout the state, that were airlifted to service men In Vietnam Christmas season. during the Penland In Service Pvt. Neal Penland, son of for mer residents, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Penland, was recently visiting his parents at Tillamook after completing boot training at Fort Polk, La. He Is now In train ing at Fort Monmouth, N. J., where he will be in electron ics school for about eight months, according to word re ceived from his parents.
