(G-T Photo) Sherman Hands Heppner First League Defeat By GREG PIERCE Winning string of the Heppner High basketball team came to a screeching halt when the Hus kies of Sherman county downed the Mustangs, 62-57, in a league encounter Friday night on the Huskies floor. The Mustangs, who had won 14' and lost one, were never in contention as they trailed 26-35 at halftime. In the third and fourth stanzas the Heppner five fought hard and outscored the Huskies in the fourth period but Just couldn't hit from the floor as they shot a cold .333 and only .279 from the free throw line. ' Ron Johnson, hoop ace for the Huskies, used his big arms and hands for taking of rebounds and pumping in baskets to lead the point production with 22. Mike Lane, who helped in the conquest for Sherman, was sec ond with 18 points. Doug Dubuque, although checked closely, led the way for Coach Bob Cantonwine's quint with 15. Lee Padberg, somewhat off his usual shooting form, threaded the net for 13 pointers. David George collected 10 points, and Ken Smith, one of the few re serves used by Coach Canton wine, helped with eight. The loss still leaves the Mus tangs on top of the western division standings of the Great er Oregon conference, and Sher man gained a notch by the win to take sole position in second place. Open A Credit Account The Next Time You Are In Town New York Store Mustangs Bounce Back with 70-52 Win oyer Rockets By GREG PIERCE After losing to Sherman on the previous night, Heppner's Mus tangs came through in good form Saturday night here by knocking off Pilot Rock High's basketball team, 70-52, in non league action. The two teams meet three times this year, two games of which are counting contests, but the one Saturday night was a Kings-X affair. The Rockets will come here again on Friday, Feb ruary 21, for a final league game. Pilot Rock ran into a hot shoot ing Heppner club and came out on the wrong side of things. The Mustangs were never in much trouble as they took an early 14-10 lead and coasted to a 30-20 intermission score. The eye-blinking Mustangs peppered the net for 30 buckets in the ball game and held the Rockets to only 15. This was the second time the Mustangs defeated the Rockets this year. They handed them a 55-47 beating on the Rockets' floor earlier this year. Ken Wright, shooting at a better pace than against Sherman, led the way to victory with his one handed pushers, accounting for 17 points. Lee Padberg was next in order with 15, and Ken Smith, who really found himself in this ball game, added 10. Smith was a ball hawking demon in the contest, rambling all over the floor to harass the Rockets. He stole the ball sev eral times and drove in for lay ups. It was easily the best game of his varsity career. The Mustangs shot a little bet ter than the night before at .423 from the floor and .526 from the free throw line. Rich Mikel led scoring for Pilot lone High's basketball squad split a series over the week-end as it downed Stanfield, 68-64, Friday night and fell to the Mc Ewen Scotties, 71-50, Saturday. The split left the Cards with a record of 5-8 in league play. Friday night, on their own floor, the Cardinals capitalized on a big second period to down the stubborn Tigers. The Tigers outshot the Lards in the first period and led by a slim 1413 mark at the end of the stanza. lone got its offense in high gear in the second canto and scored 19 counters while holding the Stanfield club to eight and enjoyed a 32-22 advantage at halftime. The third quadrant was fought head to head on even terms as neither team could gain ground. At the end of the period, both teams had counted 16 more points. A weak rally by the Tigers fell short in the final period. Stanfield made the come-back by finding the range for 26 but lone scored 20 to finish vic torious. ! Mark Halvorsen and Jay Ball topped the Ionians with 14 points each. Seibel was high man for the game and for the Tigers as he bombed the twine for 19 marks. McEwen Clobbers Cards Saturday night, the Cardinals traveled to Athena to meet the league-leading Scotties of Mc Ewen and were hit by a double barreled blitz in the persons of Jerry Keller and Mike Shields, two Scottie gunners who counted 40 points between them to lead their team to a 71-50 victory. McEwen jumped to a 45-23 lead at halftime and coasted to the victory over the out-manned Cardinals. Tom Heimbigner led the lone five in its losing effort by collec ting 16 points. Keller and Shields led the Mc Ewen effort with 20 points each. Score: McEWEN (71) Shields 20, Hansen 18, J. Whitney 9, Keller 20, D. Whitney 6. IONE (50) Heimbigner 16, J.
