Postmaster Ends 41 Years Of Devoted Service in Office . By KATHERINE LINDSTROM IONE With the resignation of Mrs. Walter G. (Ruby) Roberts this week as postmaster, lone has lost one of its most devoted public servants. She has always been most thoughtful. oromDt and very accomodating in her duties to all those in the com munity who she served. Mrs. C. C. (June) O'Connor has been ap pointed in her place and began her work on Wednesday. Mrs. Roberts may hold some kind of record for public service, having been postmaster for 41 years and during that time has never had a sick leave. She has accumulated 2,000 hours of time off. During Mrs. Robert's term of office she has been robbed twice, but neither time did the robbers get a "haul." The first one was caught, and the second time an empty safe was carried away, and was later recovered on a little used road near town. Mr. Roberts, a World War I veteran, has been her assistant most of the time since 1939. When the lone branch of the Bank of Eastern Oregon was op ened in 1959, giving lone a bank for the first time In many years. Mr. Roberts made his tory when he took 1000 silver dollars collected while on duty in the post office, to the bank in a wheelbarrow and opened one of the first accounts. Mr. and Mrs. Roberts will con tinue at the post office for a short while to assist Mrs. O'Con nor, and she will also be instruc ted by a "Key Postmaster," who will visit the post office. Past residents of the commun ity will also miss "Ruby" with her cheery smile, when they re turn and drop In at the post office to say "hello" or catch up on some item of news. Mrs. Roberts has been super intendent of the Primary De partment and also a primary Sunday school teacher in the lone Community church for many years. She is a Past Mat ron of Locust Chapter No. 119, Order of the Eastern Star, and a Past Noble Grand of the Re bekah Lodge. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hausler and four younger children returned on Saturday from Wallowa Lake where they spent the last three weeks at Wallowa Educational Day Camp at Joseph. Mr. Haus ler was an instructor there. Mr. and Mrs. Rod Kvistad and children of Beaverton came on Friday to visit her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Peterson until Wednesday when they were to leave for a vacation at the coast. Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Crawford of Portland came up on Monday to visit her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Dalzell, and to get their sons, Tommy and Neil, who have been here for about two weeks. They went home on Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Tucker and family had as their guests on Saturday, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Tucker and family of Salem, his mother, Mrs. Archie Padberg of Heppner and sister, Mary Evelyn Tucker, who has been attending summer school at Monmouth. On Sunday they all attended a fam ily reunion of the Tucker family at the City park in Hermiston. Mrs. Dallas Shockley and children of Vancouver, Wn. came on Friday for a visit with friends here. Mr. Shockley was formerly school superintendent in lone. Mrs. Gerry Bowman of Seattle, Wn., is here visiting her mother, Mrs. E. C. Heliker, for two weeks. Mrs. Heliker returned on Wed nesday from the hospital in Heppner. Surgery done on her foot is healing nicely. School Leaders at Eugene Stephen Lindstrom and Dick Hynd drove to Eugene on Sun day morning where they will participate in the High school Student Council Workshop as president and vice-president, re spectively, of lone High school this coming year. About 30 Rebekahs and their families held their annual picnic in the City Park on Sunday. Milton Morgan took his boat, down the river on Wednesday to Ilwaco, Wn., where he plan ned to do deep sea fishing. He was accompanied by Charles O'Connor. The 4-H Riding club met Sun day for a ride and to practice formations, which they will do at the Fair this year. Their lead er, Gene Harryman, and Garry Tullis accompanied them,, Ernest Christopherson Sr. Dies; Services Monday at Canby Pplntivps hprp havp received word of the death of Ernest W. Christopherson, Sr., of Donald on Wednesday evening. He passed away at Newport, where he had been taken, hoping the climate there would give him some re lief. Funeral services were held at Canby at 2:00 p.m. on Mon day with burial also at Canby. Mr. Christopherson was- born February 3, 1894, and passed awav August 7,' 1963. He was married on October 8, 1919, to Ada Agee, who survives. To this union were born three sons, Ver non of Olex, Ernest of lone, and Ersel of Donald. Other survivors are a brother, Clifford, of Gaston; four sisters, Laura Pierce of Col lege Place, Wn., Myrtle Calkins, of Paradise, Calif., Clara Miller of Angwin, Calif., and Alice White of Battle Ground, Wn., twelve grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The Christophersons lived in the Gooseberry area for many years on the farm now owned by Holmes Gabbert, leaving here in 1941 to a farm near Donald. Relatives from here attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Christopherson Jr. and family, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Aldrich and family of lone, and Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Christoph erson and family of Olex. the: e. Mrs. Clifford Aldrich has re turned from the hospital in Hermiston. She had major surg ery performed there last week. Farewell Honors Beverly Blehl Christina Lindstrom and D Ann Barnett and their mothers were hostesses for a farewell party for Beverly Biehl on Wed nesday afternoon. The children went swimming and then went to the City Park for games and refreshments. Those attending were Cindy Barnett, Melissa Mc Elligott, Kathleen McElligott, Richard Snyder, Billie Jepsen, John Rietmann, Grace Savage, Helen Byrne, John Marick, Karen Crowell, Eddie Win k 1 e m a n, Douglas Barak, Carol Wiley, Carolyn Linnell, D-Ann, Chris tina and Beverly. Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Biehl and family moved on Friday to their new home in La Grande. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Jepsen assisted them. On Sunday, Mr. and Mrs. James Barnett and family moved into their new home vacated by the Biehls. Rev. and Mrs. Walter Crowell left for Portland after church services on Sunday. Guests at the Robert Jepsen home on Tuesday were Mrs. Jep sen's mother, Mrs. C. L. Lieu alien, and her sister-in-law, Mrs. Frank Lieuallen and five child ren of Pendleton. David Brown of Salem is spend ing two weeks at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Jepsen. Mrs. David Baker honored Mrs. Arthur Lindstrom and new baby, Teena June, with a shower at her home on Thursday afternoon. After visiting and opening pack ages Mrs. Baker served petit fours, homemade candy and cof fee to the following guests: Mrs. Robert Jepsen, Mrs. Roy A. Lind strom, Mrs. Robert DeSpain of Arlington, Mrs. Lindsay Kincaid, Mrs. Roy W. Lindstrom, Mrs. John Jepsen, Mrs. Gene Riet mann, Mrs. Ray Boyce, and the honoree and hostess. Son Born to Wayne Hams Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Hams are the proud parents of an 8 lb., 10 oz. baby boy, born on August 10 at St. Anthony's hospital in Pendleton. He has been named Jeffrey Wayne. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Vester Hams, and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Pettyjohn Sr., of lone. Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Both well of Heppner, Mr. and Mrs. James Hams of Hardman, Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Lundell of lone, and Noah Pettyjohn of Missouri are the great grandparents. Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Nelson, Jr., and family were called to Portland on Wednesday by the sudden death of Mrs. Nelson's father, Sam Ransdell on Tues day. Funeral services were held on Friday. Tim Tullis returned on Friday from a most interesting trip to the southern part of Grant coun ty, where he attended the Ore gon Youth Range Camp with 66 other boys. The camp is held each year in Logan Valley at the Lake Creek Guard Station. Street Tree Care is Urged Mrs. Oscar Lundell, president of the lone Garden club, would like to remind people of the care required for the street trees planted by the Garden club this spring to help beautify the city. Only through the cooperation of those living near the trees can we all hope to benefit by the trees in years to come. Have you deep-watered your street tree regularly at least once a week.' Have you pulled all weeds from the base of your street tree? Have you mulched your street other suitable material? This tree with peat moss, sawdust, or will conserve moisture and keep weeds down. Mr. and Mrs. Helmuth Her mann and family of Oak Grove have been visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. G. Hermann, ihey all spent Sunday at the Herm iston City Park with other mem bers of the Rauch family reunion. Ruralettes Meet On August 1 the Ruralettes 4-H club met at the home of Cherl Carlson. We gave our dem onstrations and talked about Judging. Mrs. Bergstrom had some classes for us to judge. Julie Zinter had the best score and Mrs. Bergstrom gave her a candy bar. Ann McEillgott and Darlene Warren were absent. We played games and had refresh ments. Visitors were Mrs. Louis Carlson, Mrs. L. A. McCabe, Mrs. Sid Zinter, Mrs. Ernie Christoph erson and Sandy Carlson. Cheri Carlson, reporter lone Gives Award The lone PTA gave a schol arship to Princess Louise Pointer for her first year in college, rather than the Lexington PTA as was erroneously reported in last week's Gazette-Times. She plans to attend the University of Portland. lone Soldier Takes Part in Exercise Army Specialist Four Loy L. Keene, lone, is participating in Exercise Swift Strike III. a U. S. Strike Command exercise in Georgia and North and South Carolina, involving more than 75,000 armed forces personnel. Swift Strike III pits two task forces against each other in a four-week mock war ending Aug ust 16, and includes airborne maneuvers, long-distance air lifts, air-ground support missions and counter-guerrilla operations. Specialist Keene is a motor mechanic In Battery C of toe 7th Artillery 8th Missile Bat talion at Fort George G. Meade, Md. He entered the Army in Oc tober 1961, completed basic training at Fort Ord, Calif., and was stationed at Fort Bliss, Tex., before his present assignment at Fort George G. Meade. Keene is a 1957 graduate of lone High school and a 1960 graduate of Oregon Technical Institute in Klamath Fails. Before entering the Army, he was employed by the U. S. Gyp sum Co., Pilot Rock.
