HEPPNER GAZETTE-TIMES, Monument By MARTHA MATTESON MONUMENT Mr. ad Mrs. Bill Kenton of Portland spent the week-end here visiting Mrs. Ken ton's brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Bovd Hinton. Lula Settle has her three grandchildren, Billy, Sandra and Linda, with her from Fenaieton for two weeks. Barbara Preston of Prairie City is spending the summer with grandparents, Herman and Lelia Thompson. Mrs. Choicey Connelly of Bend came over Thursday to see her three children, Audrla, Dell and Ray Vandetta, who are stay ing here visiting their father, Charles Vandetta. Miss Ruth Rogers of Pendle ton spent her vacation here at the ranch home of her sister, Mrs. Lelia Thompson. Mr. and Mrs. Dick Martin and four children of Prineville visited his folks, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Martin, recently. Thelma Williams and her sis ter, Mrs. Willard Jennings and children returned home Thurs day after visiting their folks in Jerome, Ida., a week. Rev. and Mrs. Verne Wiese of Pendleton drove over and held Sunday evening services here. Mr. and Mrs. Ansil Martin and two sons of Prineville spent the week-end here visiting with rel atives and friends including the Johnsons, Nolands and Martins. Mrs. J. E. Scott and son Robin and Miss Dianne Hutchison drove to Pendleton Tuesday to visit Mrs. June Hutchison in the St. Anthony hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Paige Dulaney have moved into the Slocum house for the school year. Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Sweek and three sons of Heppner spent the week-end here with her sis ters, Stella McCarty. Lois Du laney and their families. Donald Mclnnls and son were here from Salem over the past week-end. Lawrence Preston of Prairie City Is here helping his grand father during haying operations. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Durbin and children of Prineville and Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Hunt and baby of Fox spent the week end with their mother, Reeta Hunt Hin ton. Mrs. Ellen Moore, formerly of Heppner, has moved Into her new home here that she bought from Nona Copeiand of balem ana has had remodeled. Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Matteson and children who had spent the past two weeks here and in Fox visiting friends and relatives left Sunday morning for their home in Alturas, Calif. Mrs. Owen Smith and Ben Spain drove to Pendleton Satur day morning in the station wagon to bring Mrs. June Hutch ison home from St. Anthony hos pital where she had surgery on her back. She is slowly improv ing. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kingman of Sacramento, Calif., were here over the week-end on a vacation trip through Oregon and Wash ington. They went on to Wash ington Monday morning, taking their nephew, Robert Dale Scott with them from here. Mrs. H. W. Scott and son Robin left Monday morning for Port land on business. Week-end guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Matteson were their four children and four grandchildren, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kingman of Sacramento, Calif., Mr. and Mrs. LaVcrne Matteson and two children of Alturns, Calif., Dale L. RHEA CREEK A lightning fire was renorted in the Lonerock district Sunday evening. Several went from Hardman to help fight it. Among those that went were Cecil Mc- Daniel, Dean Graves and Archie Bochdolt. Miss Linda Andrus of Portland is visiting her grandparents, Mr, and Mrs. H. C. Lesley. Mr. Les ley met her at Arlington on Fri day. Mrs. Maxine Mahon and child ren of Elgin came Wednesday evening to visit her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sam McDanlel over night. Bob Mahon stayed for a longer visit with his grandpar ents. Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Schoen- bcrger and daughter, Georgia of Kimberly visited Alta Stevens on their way to Heppner last Wednesday evening. Carol Davis of Lonerock vis ited recently at the home of his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Cecil McDavis. Mr. and Mrs. Eslie Walker, Bonnie Kessell, Linda Andrus, Guy Chapin, Mr. and Mrs. Blaine Chapel and Cassy, Mr. and Mrs. Joel Engelman and Frankie spent Sunday picnick ing at Bull Prairie Lake and did some fishing. Mr. and Mrs. Sam McDaniel and grandson, Bobby Mahon of Elgin, and Mr. and Mrs. Cary Hastings of Heppner were among those picnicking at Bull Prairie Lake on Sunday. Mrs. Dallas Shockley and children of Vancouver, Wn., are visiting this week with the Arnie Hedman family. Mr. and Mrs. Oliver C re wick, son Don, and Fran McLeod, left Tuesday for a trip to the coast. They plan to return Thursday (today). The three sons of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Berry are visiting this week with their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Murl Berry, Echo. Mrs. Jim Phegley and child ren left Saturday to spend this week with her parents in Cres cent City, Calif. 15 - 16 - 17 Oregon Briggs Are Hosts For Grange Picnic By MARY LEE MARLOW BOARDMAN Members of Greenfield Grange held a picnic Sunday afternoon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Briggs with 24 present. Present from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Tannehill of La Grande and Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Thorpe of Hermiston. Guests included Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Fortner, W. G. Seehafer, Mrs. Rollin Bishop, Dewena West and Eva La Chance, the latter also of La Grande. Mr. and Mrs. Claud Worden and Glenda Williams went to Payette, Idaho over the week-end to visit at the home of their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Dallas Forthman. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Tatone spent the week-end in La Grande where Tatone participated in the annual Elks Golf Tournament. Linda and Jody Tatone spent last week visiting relatives in Portland. Their daughter Gloria returned home with them after visiting here for ten days. Terry Hayes of Maupin also visited at the Hayes home. Her mother, Mrs. Jeff Hayes, came after her last Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Pickar re turned to their home in Sheri dan after visiting the past two weeks at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Claud Worden, and Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Williams. Mr. and Mrs. Garnet Barratt of Mesa, Ariz., and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Thompson of Heppner vis ited Saturday at the home of Mrs. Russell Miller. Other recent visitors were Mrs. Miller's brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Akers and daughter Nancy of Portland. Mrs. Miller and daughter Pat left Sunday for Payette, Idaho to vis it at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs Vern Carpenter. Mr. and Mrs. John Steg and children Henry, Donald, Janet, Susan and Lynn of Oroville, Wn. visited Friday and Saturday at the home of Mrs. Steg's uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Hamilton. Ronnie Zielinski. eleven-year- old son of Mrs. Shirley Zielin ski, had surgery on his eye last week at bt. Mary s hospital in Walla Walla. Mr. and Mrs. Darrell Rash and daughters Valerie and Denise of Portland were week-end visitors at the home of Rash's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Rash. Diane Rash accompanied them home to visit this week. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Skoubo and sons, Mr. and Mrs. Gunnar Skoubo and daughters, and Mr. and Mrs. Gene Hitgel anl fam ily all attended the reunion of the Skoubo family in Junction City over the week-end. Renee and Rena Ely of Herm iston visited last week at the homes of their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Elvin Ely. Mr. and Mrs. Marlow visited three days last week in Walla Walla, Wn. at the home of her aunt, Mrs. Ernest Zerba. Thermometer Hits 98 A thunder storm and shower cooled the temperature here for a short while Sunday afternoon, but Monday's maximum was again 98 degrees. M : J f ; PEACE PIPE MUSEUM VISITED The court of the Umatilla County Fair went shopping for teepees last week when they visited the Peace Pipe Museum on the grounds of the Umatilla County Fair in Hermiston. The museum features the Roger J. Bounds Indian collection of authentic regalia, pioneer guns and pictures of the old days in Umatilla county. Mrs. Cope land is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Warner. The Assembly of God High school and Junior High school classes held a picnic at Hat Rock State Park Monday evening, and engaged the "Go-Carts" for 2 hours. They swam in the ocean and drove through the "Twenty-Miracle Miles," return ing to Irrigon Sunday evening. Mrs. Alton Gasser ran the store in their absence. Mr. and Mrs. Dave Graybeal, Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Miller and Mrs. Miller's brother, William L. Bales, returned to Irrigon Monday after spending 10 days in the mountains, fishing and hiking. Mr. and Mrs. Doaks now live in Green Acres, near Spo kane, Wn. Mr. Doaks taught in the Lexington schools in 1916 and 1917 and served as Sunday school superintendent and in other offices in the Lexington church. Everyone is extended an in vitation to attend the dinner. Morris McCarl was taken by ambulance to Pioneer Memorial hospital Sunday morning from injuries received while working out his horse. Friends of Clarence Buchanan are sorry to hear of his accident on Sunday. He was taken to St. Anthony's hospital in Pendle ton where he underwent major surgery. Mrs. Patricia Darnielle and daughter Karen of Portland were visitors one day last week at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. New't O'Harra. Karen remained for a weeks visit with her grandparents. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Hunt spent the week-end in Spokane with friends. Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Majeske returned on Thursday from a two weeks trip which took them to Yellowstone Park and way points. Mrs. Florence McMillan vis ited a few days last week with her daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Cool in Pendle ton. Waide and Pearl Sawyer returned home with her for a visit. Carroll Messenger is spending some time in Portland at the home of his brother and family, Mr. and Mrs. Gerry Messenger. Mr. and Mrs. T. E. Messenger. Sr., who have been spending some time in Lexington have returned to their home in Mit chell.
