Banquet and Prom Slated for Week-end By JUNE CHRISTOPHERSON IONE lone high school Junior-Senior banquet will be held tonight, (Thursday) at 7:00 p.m. Attendance is by invitation only. Guest speaker will be Don Olm scheid, administrative principal of A. C. Houghton school, Irri gon. The Junior-Senior prom is to be held Saturday, April 27, at 9:00 p.m. in the high school gymnasium. Music will be furn ished by the "Keytones" of Port land. The dance is open to the public and tickets are $1.00 for singles and $1.50 for couples. Mr. and Mrs. Donald Eall and family of lone, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Ball of Lexington, Elmer Peterson, and Edith, Dale and Wayne White were guests at the Lewis Ball home Wednesday, April 17, to celebrate Mr. Ball's birthday. Approximately 120 people at tended the PTA sponsored movie Sunday afternoon in the high school cafetorium. The lone bridge club met Thursday, April 18, at the home of Mrs. Pete Cannon. Those win ning prizes were Mary McCleod, June Lindstrom, and Rita Hed man. Mr. and Mrs. Arnie Hedman have moved to Heppner where Mr. Hedman is in the furniture business. Mr. and Mrs. Skip Pettyjohn have moved into the Hedman home in lone. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Pettyjohn traveled to Portland last week on business. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Cropt and son Marvin of Smelterville, Ida ho, spent the week-end at the Lewis Ball home. Also visiting at the Ball home on Sunday, April 21 were Mr. and Mrs. Don ald Ball and family of lone and Mr. and Mrs. Dale Sherman of Heppner. Mr. ana Mrs. Lioya fietcner of Tacoma, Wn were in lone visiting with Mrs. Ida Esteb dur ing Easter vacation. A Bineo Dartv was held Wed nesday, April 17, at the home of Mrs. Oscar Lundell, with Mrs. Lewis Ball and Mrs. Arvilla Swanson as co-hostesses. The next party will be at the home of Vida Heliker on May 15. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Bergstrom returned home Thursday, April 18 from a trip to Calif., where they visited with Mr. and Mrs. Walter Bergstrom of San Jose and Rev. and Mrs. Rod Mac- Kenzie and children of Car michael, Calif. They visited with Mr. and Mrs. Norman Berg strom and daughters Donna and Diane of Brookings, and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Bergstrom, Beverly, Patricia, and Jeffrey in Portland on their way home. Mrs. Cora Ellis returned home Monday from the hospital in Heppner where she was confined over the week-end. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Bemis of Orlando, Florida, were week-end guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Markham Baker. Mr. and Mrs. David Baker mot ored to Pendleton Friday, April 1.9 to do some shopping. They brought their children Bob and Susan home with them to spend the week-end. Bob and Susan attend school at the St. Joseph Academy in Pendleton. Mrs. Bob DeSpain of Arlington visited with friends in lone, Monday, April 22. Brenner Home on Leave Capt. LeRoy Brenner and his wife Terry are visiting with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Bren ner of lone. Capt. Brenner re cently completed an Air Force school in Alabama. He is now on vacation and will return to California where he is stationed. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Akers and daughter Nancy from Port land spent tne weeK-ena visit ing with friends and relatives in lone. Twelve ladies attended the Home Ec meeting at the home of Mrs. Lewis Halvorsen Friday, April 19. Plans were made for a potluck dinner to be held at the Grange hall Saturday, April 25, for all persons participating in the clean-up day at the var ious cemeteries in the area. Kitty Yarnell won the door prize. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Helina and son John of Seattle and Mrs. Warren Crutcher of Gresham visited in lone over the week end at the home of Mrs. Anna Lindstrom. Mr. and Mrs. Frank lin Lindstrom entertained many friends and relatives at a birth day dinner Sunday evening, April 21 in honor of the birth day of Mrs. Anna Lindstrom. Mrs. Jack Younger of Prine ville, and Mrs. Bill Jager and Mrs. Aldo Loston of Condon were visitors at the A. H. Marick home Thursday, April 18. Mrs. A. H. Marick and Evelyn went to Mosier Wednesday, April 17 to attend the funeral of Mrs. Marick's great uncle. Rev. Walter Crowell and Mrs. Crowell from Portland were vis itors in lone the past week-end and were guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Barak on Thursday, April 18. The Arnica club met Wednes day, April 17 at the home of Mrs. Gene Rietmann with Mrs. Glenn Biehl as co-hostess. They played "Court Whist" and Laurel Cannon won high. Mrs. Milton Morgan is in the hospital in The Dalles for treat ment. Mr. and Mrs. Merle Baker and family of Portland and Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Baker of Heppner were guests of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Baker for Easter Sunday dinner. Mr. and Mrs. Donald Peterson and family motored to Portland Sunday, April 14, where they spent Easter Sunday at the home of Mrs. Peterson's par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Verner Han son. Tom Martin and Bob Rice were home from Columbia Basin College for the Easter week-end. Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Carlson were week-end visitors at the home of their son and family, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Carlson. Sorority Hosts Party IONE The Epsilon Sigma Alpha sorority held a surprise party and miscellaneous show er for Mrs. Bill Rietmann and baby on Wednesday, April 17 at the home of Mrs. Donald Pet erson. Serving as co-hostesses with Mrs. Peterson were Mrs Sam Crawford and Mrs. Joe Hausler. PINE CITY PINE CITY Carlie Fischer, employed by the Oregon Poultry association, taught the project lessons for the extension clubs on "Poultry Cookery" on Fri day at the fair annex. Those from this vicinity enjoying the lesson were Mrs. Jerry Myers, Mrs. Weldon Witherrite and Mrs. Willard French. Mr. and Mrs. Chuck Myers and family are in Portland this week-end to visit her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Schwab. Mr. and Mrs. Larry Meredith were visiting from Saturday un til Monday at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Wigglesworth. The Merediths are en route from Sacramento, Calif., to Portland where he has been transferred. Jerry Myers and David Roth- rock trucked a load of cattle on triday to the Harlan Craw ford farm near La Grande. The P.G.G. auxiliary met Tues- day at the home of Mrs. John Madison for a potluck luncheon at noon and a lesson on Mosaic tiling. Members attending were Mrs. Tom Ashbeek, Mrs. Weldon Witherrite, Mrs. Willard French, Mrs. Bruce Henry, Mrs. Gaylord Madison and Mrs. George Luc- iani. A tour of places of interest in the Tri-Cities will be enjoyed for the May meeting. Mr. and Mrs. Burl Wat ten- burger returned from a visit in Portland on Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Marion Finch and Mr. and Mrs. Burl Watten burger enjoyed the Veterans of Foreign Wars card party in Echo Saturday night. Guest speaker for the morning will be Miss Evelyn Jepsen who is attending school at the Northwest Christian col lege in Eugene. Mrs. Bertha Hunt and brother- in-law, Percy Connor, motored to The Dalles on Sunday where they visited Mrs. Connor, a sis ter of Mrs. Hunt. Mrs. Connor returned home with them for a few days visit. Mrs. Florence Mc Millan traveled as far as Rufus with them where she visited her daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. George Irvin. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Pickens and son Tom of Puntzi Air Station in Canada was a caller at the Bergen Ledbetter home last week. Mr. and Mrs. O. W. Custforth. D. O. Nelson, Mr. and Mrs. Don Turner, Mrs. Dean Hunt, Lee Padberg and Donald VanWinkle were among those attending the services for Mrs. Lucile Weath erford in Arlington on Monday. Mrs. Weatherford was a teacher in the Lexington and Heppner schools during recent years. Mrs. Roger Campbell and Mrs. Bob Lovgren and Mrs. Johnnie Ledbetter motored to Pendleton where Mrs. Campbell and Mrs. Lovgren participated in the Bowl Down cancer tournament. Mr. and Mrs. Alonzo Hender son and daughter Betty, Laddie Henderson and Lylo Allyn were all Pasco callers on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Frederick son of Salem are spending a few days visiting her sister and family, Mr. and Mrs. William C. VanWinkle, and Mrs. Nellie Palmer and family. Leo Ashbocks with 17 and junior leaders Cake Baking Contest Rules Told by League Rules have recently been an nounced for the 1963 cake bak ing contest sponsored annually by the Oregon Wheat Growers' League at the Morrow County Fair. Directing the contest this year are Mrs. Douglas Drake and Mrs. Charles Doherty- co chairmen, representing the do mestic wheat utilization com mittee of the league. Entrants must bake a frosted chocolate layer cake using solid type shortening, with recipe card attached to the cake board, and exhibited and judged at the Morrow county fair according to standards set up by the league. Contestants must be residents of Morrow county, either man or woman over 21, or married women or men; excluding pro fessional bakers. County premiums paid to winners are $5.00, first; $3.00, second, and $2.00, third. First place winner will be eligible to enter state bake-off at the annual convention in December. Top award of $100 will be paid to the state winner, plus a ro tating trophy presented at the annual banquet. County premium books will carry further information on score sheets for judging outside and inside appearance, flavor and frosting.
