HEPPNER GAZETTE-TIMES, Thursday, September 13, 1962 Japanese Visits; Madison, Smith Governor Guests Gaylord Madison and Jack Smith were guests recently of Governor Hatfield when he en tertained Tadashi Saito, vice governor of the prefecture of Hokkaido, Japan. The luncheon, held at the Illahe Country club near Salem, was attended by representatives of the State Board of Forestry, the State Bu reau of Marine Fisheries and the Department of Agriculture. The similarity of the latitude and the climate of Oregon and the Island of Hokkaido, prompt ed the vice-governor of that per fccture to visit Oregon. Governor Saito was getting first hand in formation about our methods of increasing pasture for cattle. They now have 20,000 head of dairy cows and they wish to in crease this number. The vice-governor learned of the breeds predominating in Oregon. Thel soil is very acid. Like western Oregon, they must use large amounts of lime. They have used some superphosphate and ammonia sulphate. They are beginning to use anhydrous am monia. The island of Hokkaido im ports some of their rice but they raise all other grains that they use. The wheat and barley that is Imported is used in trade. In their pastures they raise red and white clover and fescue. They need to drain some of their land. The vice-governor visited Ore gon State University because he is interested in planting trees on the hills and mountains in his prefecture. He wished to see mechanical methods of planting trees.
