This week things are rather hectic as anyone can tell you, if they have youngsters involved in the fair! If your party or club news got left out this week please be pa tient and I'll get after it next week. (If I live through the week)! ooo JUNE HAS always been the tra ditional bride and groom month but from the number of wedding showers and engage ment stories I wrote this week, i m sure late August and early September could run a good race tor the title. ooo DUPLICATE BRIDGE play con tinued on the twice monthly schedule as seven tables gather ed last Tuesday night in the Episcopal parish hall. High north-south went to Mae Gil liam and Ambrose Chapin; sec ond, Jim Driscoll and Gordon Hutchens; third, Delia McCurdy and Harlan McCurdy, Jr. High east-west went to Bert Huff and Gordon Pratt; second, Rachel Dick and Daisy Collins; third, Phil and Hazel Mahoney. The play will meet again August 28. 0 0 0 CARRIE BECKETT was hostess for the Friday Afternoon Pin ochle club last week. Pearl Wright ended up the lucky one as she won high and paired off with Grace Buschke to win the pinochle. Carrie had low for the play. Others making up the two tables were Janina Johnson, Doris Watkins, Gladys Beckett, Beulah Mankin, and Hannah Anderson. 0 0 0 SPEAKING OF showers and weddings, the hostess flutters around getting the house spic and span (sounds like an ad) and -wondering what to serve? Joan Hughes solved the serving problem when mother Mary Benge, made a cheese cake. Joan says they take hours to make and are rich, but, oh, so good. Mary, could I use your recipe in the column. Then as to weddings, mother is asking herself, "what will I wear? I must get to shopping!" Martha Barak called me on her daughter's wedding, laughed and said if she didn't eet to it she would appear at the wed I ding in burlap and beads! Just a lew of the behind-the-scenes activities amid the hustle and bustle and excitement. I can hardly wait! ooo SUNDAY AFTERNOON the Elks duplicate bridge unit party met at the grade school multi ourpose room for master point play, bix tables were in play with Mr. and Mrs. Everett Ed miston, Hermiston, winning high. W. A. Saltmarsh and P. B. Ek strom, both of Walla Walla, were second. Terry and Karen Thomp son were third high for the after noon. ooo JUDY AND Robin Nyman were honored with a joint going away party for them at the Roice Fulleton home August 4. Host esses were Ruby and Becky Fulleton who entertained friends of the two girls with games and refreshments. The two girls left for their new home in New York. ooo ORA EVANS told me she got a note from her grandparents, Judy and Robin Nyman, and said they were having quite a time seeing everything and going here and there. A bouquet of mixed artificial flowers arranged in a pedestal beside a bride and groom was placed in the foreground on the gift table. Refreshments of Jello salad and crackers, cheese cake, and coffee were served buffet style to Mrs. Roy Quackenbush, Mrs. Ellis Pettyjohn, Mrs. Lewis Ball, Mrs. Ray Ayers, Mrs. Delbert Piper, Jerald Rood, and Sharon Ayers. Marie and her fiance, Wavne Ball, will be married August 24, 8:00 p.m., at the Assembly of uoci cnurcn, Heppner. Wedding Date Set For Paula Barak Mr. and Mrs. Jack Barak, Lex ington, announce the coming marriage ot their daughter, Paula to William Henderson Peek, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Peek, New berg. The wedding is set for September 1, 2:00 p.m., daylight time, at the First Congregational church in Portland. All friends and relatives are cordially invited to the ceremony and reception. Mothers' Club Picnic Planned For Sunday The annual Mothers' club "steak out" picnic is planned for Sunday, August 26, at the country home of Dr. and Mrs. W. W. Wolff. Activities will start at 5 p.m. with husbands of the members as Invited guests. Two Give Shower ' For Lydia Van Houte At Padberg Home Lydia Van Houte, bride-elect of Neal Penland, was the lion ored guest Saturday afternoon at a lovely bridal shower held at the Archie Padberg home. Mary Evelyn Eucker and Joanne Schmidt were co-nostesses tor the occasion. Two white candles with daisies arranged at the base of each candle, decorated the re freshment tables which carried out the yellow and white color theme. Lydia was assisted in the opening of her gifts by Bernice Thomson. Mrs. iea uaw re ceived a prize as winner of the game plaved. Here on vacation from their homes in California last week were Mr. and Mrs. Martin Dvr of Vallejo, Calif., and Diane i horsen of Mountain View, Calif. They were visiting various rel atives in the area and left for the south on Monday. Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Ruhl, Mr. and Mrs. C. E. McOuarrie. Mrs. Gene Gray and daughter, Flor ence, Hermiston, Iourneved to Multnomah Falls to meet Mr. and Mrs. Dick Ruhl of Corvallis for a family outing Sunday. Also coming with the Ruhls were Skip Ruhl and Bob Gray of Corvallis. Grandson Born Tenth grandchild of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hughes of Heppner was born August 15 to Mr. and Mrs. Wm. B. Hughes of Roseburg. The new grandson had not been named when the grandparents received word of the birth. He is the couple's second child, the other also being a bov. William Scott, 15 months old. The father, who was lifeguard at the swim ming pool for part of the sum mer here, will take his family and move from Roseburg to Carl ton soon where he has a teach ing position. Maternal grand arents of the new baby are Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Dawson of Riddle. Other grandchildren in the Joe Hughes family are the four of their son and daughter-in-law, Tom Hughes of Heppner, and four in the family of their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Keith Marshall, Sweet Home. Mr. and Mrs. James William son and two children of Monte zuma, Iowa, arrived last Thurs day for a visit with his brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Williamson, and family. They are on a vacation trip aiid plan to remain until Monday when they will return via Yellowstone Park. This Is the farthest west that the visitors have been. The Ray William sons went back to Iowa to visit them two years ago. Mrs. Tom Walters, Woodland Hills, Cal., is here visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Thom son, for two weeks while her husband Is on active duty with the U. S. Coast Guard.
