ruiiiiNin TO THE EDITOR . . To the Editor: I wonder tf IhU ditt-uwlon shouM be continue, however there are three points of h ch y.u dissatrreed with me which need some clarification. They are Certainly Harvey Aluminum in The Palles h sbout twice the valuation rf Morrow county and wc pay about JUOO.OoO taxes cn our valuation, but they paid rnly $293,000 on double ours. Harvey has about WO children In school and at the rate of $r00 each, the cost f education would be $100.0(io and they paid but $220,000 school tax, add to that. $l.'A0O0 apiece for property tax on 40 family employee! which U $fi0,000 gross or about $100,000 net loss on the schools alone. This has always been true of our local saw mill. They paid $16,000 tax. employ ..... ,,av about $150 each, prop 4fl families pay about SC.(KX). This Is a gross for the mill and employees of $22,000 ,.t t-hirh $17,000 It school tax Now about 80 school children arc from saw mill rallies. Ai .,,Kt f.f r:on each or $56,000 gross It has caused the farmers to subsidize the mill at the rate t tfvi or mor Der year. Truly V ' f ' - a - Industry must be subsidized In some way. cheap raw materials, free sites and reduced taxes, but must w do It. Th next point Is certainly a farm depression comes at a different time than inuusiry. More truth was never spoken since farmers are the largest users of the four basics, namely steel, chemicals, rubber, and pet roleum. Like night follows day, after three years of farm depres sion comes the castrophlc Indus trial depression with all Its un employment. Lastly the word comparative was used In connection with the description of our police tasks," "comparatively Idle," as compar cd with the policing of an In dustrial city or county. Due perhaps to our discusslno, Mr Kennedy of the State Devel opment Commission spent some time with me last luesuay. ine Dalles figures were confirmed by him. Another thing, the new nrnrmsorl industry here Is of a proposed inuusiry nere is oi a . - i in.. on.ii, eiense iiaiuit-, mm me "p , i. Wnen tJOCing looses us uiiiuavu, what will become of our econ omy? Mr Kennedy admitted this might be a problem. Mr Kennedy also made the statement several times that our resource was thru our farm or ganizations to try for a broader tax base at the next session of the Legislature. Do you think that possible? It Is an odd circumstance that the state of Washington taxes the employee, Oregon taxes the employer, In the major part; Washington has Industries and Is broke. Oregon has practically no industry and is In fine shape financially. Why can't we tax both groups In both states and keep in the mdldle of the road? It Is not my purpose to try to stop Industry from coming here but to point up the inequalities in our tax laws and try to pre pare ourselves for this coming adjustment. Let's think, we spend $1,000,000 to educate 1500, children in Morrow county now. It will cost $2,000,000 for the next 1500, one million for edu cation and one million for school THEATER Tmr.. TiL. Then, I would like to point out that In the past two years, swimming lessons for adults have been of fered and the rcsjionsc has been good but not what It should have been for this area. Those associated with the cattle buying Industry agreed that 651 of the livers or rnttii. thev buv are condemned because of fluke. They, therefore buy all of their cattle on tne assumption that their liver will be condemned. During our dis cussion with the buyers and milkers. It was agreed that a real service could be done if a control could bc found of the snails which spread the liver fluke in pastures. Research is now under way at Oregon State College on this. Another discussion was that ,f prubhv cattle. Buyers are happy over the systematic treat ments now developed for the control of grubs. They do, how ever receive a high per centage of grubby cattle at the time of year that grubs show up even though there are these effective treatments. In discussing tne use of systematic treatments, refer ence was made to progress in a Utah area cattle grub control. This was Interesting and Is be ing passed on with the hopes that more of our livestocKmen will nlan a erub control pro gram this fall. One of the good things about the grub control treatment is that of the results in controlling lice, also.
