Wc have drawn up a schedule of comparisons of costs and income, be tween farm stored and commercial warehouse grains, which we believe to be accurate and fair. These figures are based on actual tests and govern ment findings. The listed figures are for the lone area. COSTS OF FARM STORED WHEAT: Using a 9,766 bushel bin costing $3,400.00 Annual interest at 4 $136.12 Annuol weight shrinkage at 1 166.00 Annual sprays, fumigants Cr misc 100.00 Annuol property tax 52.27 Total annual costs $ 454.39 Freight to Portland (".15 per bushel via truck-barge Total cost on farm stored 1,919.29 1,464.90 INCOME 9,766 bushels at estimated price of $2.00 per bushel, Portland 19,532.00 Less costs listed above Net return to farmer 17612.71 COMMERCIAL WAREHOUSE STORED WHEAT Income on 9,766 bushel '"2.00 Portland 19,532.00 Less freight and handling if sold within 10 days at $.15 per bushel 1464-90 Net returns to farmers on commercial stored grain 18067.10 These figures indicate that on wheat raised for marketing at harvest, the farmer makes a net of $151.39 on warehouse stored grain if sold at harvest over the same grain handled via the farm storage method. This margin will reduce at the rate of $97.66 for each month held in storage. Actually very little of our commercial warehouse stored grain has gone for loan in this county during the past few years. This is because the market, during the great part of each year, has been over the loan value. Should farm stored wheat be placed under loan, the government pays $.10 per bushel storage to the farmer at the time of loan. Therefor, should farm stored wheat be sold by the end of the year, say five months after harvest, the net return on this compared to commercial elevator stored wheat would be about equal with no gains left to pay the cost of the farm storage tanks. It would therefor appear that the only gain from farm storage, by the farmer, would come should he allow his wheat to go for loan instead of selling it. To further dear this picture, it presently appears that farm storage rates for farm storage will be reduced downward to compensate for reduced storage charges allowed by the gov ernment. We recommend the raising of wheat for market rather than for government loan whenever the market justifies. Morrow County Grain Growers, Inc.
