ONE HEADLINES By ECHO PALMATEER The Fourth of July was ob served here with tire works the evening of the 3rd followed by a dance in the Legion hall. These were sponsored by the American Legion post Several from here attended the Aqua Capers at McNary. Linda Heimbigner was a princess of the Aqua Capers. Mr and Mrs Ted Palmateef and family spent the Fourth weekend in Bend. They were ac companied by Mr and Mrs Harry O'Donnell of Heppner. Mr and Mrs Herbert Ekstrom and Roland and Mr and Mrs C E Brenner and Judy Eubanks spent the weekend fishing at La Pine. Mrs Aice Anderson of Arizona and Mr and Mrs Tom West and sons Ricky and Jerry of Port land spent Sunday at the David Rietmann home. John Peterson spent the week end with his parents, Mr and Mrs Victor Peterson in The Dalles. Mr and Mrs Tom White and daughters of Portland spent the weekend here. A large crowd attended the Lutheran picnic at Cutsforth Park Sunday. A picnic dinner was served and horseshoes and baseball were played. Mr and Mrs Merle Baker and family of Portland spent the weekend with relatives here. Mr and Mrs Clifford Carlson and family of Portland were vis itors here last week. Mr and Mrs Dick Ekstrom and Vickey of La Grande spent the weekend here. Around 200 were served at the potluck dinner. The McCabes were presented with a money tree. They are leaving soon for Bay City where he will be em ployed in a meat market He has operated a meat market here for the past 10 years in connection with the E W Bristow store. Mr and Mrs Elmer Holtz and daughters and Miss Anna Jepsen recently visited their uncle and aunt, Mr and Mrs Chris Jepsen in Valley, Wash. Mr and Mrs Rodney Crawford Jr, and children of Portland spent the Fourth weekend with her mother, Mrs Ida Coleman, and other relatives. Mr and Mrs Elmer Newton and family of Coos Bay visited rel atives here last week. They just returned from Baltimore, Md. where they visited her sister and family, Mr and Mrs John Louden. Mr and Mrs Robert Hudson of Portland visited his brother and family, Mr and Mrs Charles Hud son last week. They were on their way to Pendleton to visit relatives. Mrs Duane Baker and daugh ter and Miss Mardine Baker were Portland visitors last week. Miss Baker attended the Nurses Re view at the University of Oregon Medical school. Mr and Mrs Claude Devine of North Bonneville were also present. Queen Sharon Cutsforth and her court attended the rodeo at Ukiah and the Aqua Capers at McNary. AT CENTRAL MARKET FOR JULY 10 d ears it ONIONS - FROZEN FOODS - Market & Several from here attended the rodeo at Condon the 4th and 5th where Sandra Eubanks, daughter of Mr and Mrs John Eubanks was one of the prin cesses. She entered in three jun ior races, one half mile race and 2 one fourth mile races and received 1st in all of them. Mr and Mrs Bill Eubanks and family of Portland visited at the Howard Eubanks home and at tended the rodeo at Condon. Mr and Mrs Norman Swan- son and family of Portland were vlskors here over the 4th. Mr and Mrs Donald Ramsey and sons, Brad and Mike of Eu gene visited her sister and fam- ilv. Mr and Mrs David McLeod over the weekend. Brad remained for a longer visit Mr and Mrs Dennis Swanson recently returned home from their honeymoon trip ana are now at home in tne wmtes apartments. Mr and Mrs Pete Cannon are moving into their new home on Second Street. Mr and Mrs David Ely and daughter, Lois, of Ordnance vis ited his father, Fred Ely over the weekend. Thev all made a trip - through the John Day country. Mr and Mrs Vernice Crawford and family of Helix were vis itors at the home of his parents. Mr and Mrs Wate Crawford over the weekend. Mr and Mrs George Griffith and family have moved to Mor gan from McDermitt, Nevada. Mrs Hugh Bell left last week for her home in Condon. She was a patient in the Pioneer Memorial hospital and then spent a few days with her daugh ter and son-in-law, Mr and Mrs Franklin Llndstrom. The James Botts family have moved to California. Mrs Franklin Elv. who is at tending summer school at Port land State, spent the Fourth here. Mr and Mrs Ronald Bishop and daughter, Barbara spent tne Fourth In Echo. Mrs Mabel Chaffee and Mrs Ethel Zeimantz have returned to Heppner after a month spent in Seattle visiting relatixes and friends. PINEAPPLE JUICE 5 F0R 98c for 25c STRAWBERRY JAM 4 FOR $00 Grocery HEPPNER Chats With Your Home Agent By ESTHER KIRMIS Sunday was a day that began with rain, but ended up in sun shinemaking our Karl Beach 4-H Picnic" up at Cutsforth park an enthusiastic success. 4-H leaders and parents began gathering at the 4-H camp site around 10:30 A M ready to pitch tents and scrub up the camp kitchen. But the rain stymied the action for an hour. This worked out well for the Hope and Valby Lutheran cong regations who were also up at Cutsforth park for their annual church festival. 4-H leaders in vited the Lutherans to come un der the roof of the 4-H build ing and hold their morning ser vice. Benches were hastily set up, an altar improvised and Rev John Rvderen. Lutheran castor. held his morning service. Came noon and also came the sun! So each group could go ahead with their own picnic plans. I always marvel at the work ing enthusiasm of our 4-H lead ers and parents in Morrow coun ty. Miss Frances Harvey, Uma tilla county extension agent who was visiting me on Sunday, also commented on this. There were about 50 families present. The men soon had the tents pitched and the cots and mattresses in place. The women scrubbed up all the pots and pans in the kitchen and then set out a festive "pot-luck" picnic meal that was a delicht to the hungry youne- sters and the tired parents. The day was climaxed with a talk by Karl Beach, outstanding 4-H club member of Morrow county, who was chosen as one of Oregon's four delegates to the National Club Conference in Washington, D C in June. Karl had an interesting story to tell. He showed slides of the sights the four delegates, and their chaperones, Mr and Mrs IT'S DANCE TIME! SATURDAY NIGHT FAIR PAVILION HEPPNER Boardman Notes Two groups of children have entered the swimming classes at the Hermiston pool last week. In the beginners group were Bobbie Skoubo. Jodv and Linda Tatone, Cindy, Nancy and Andy Morlan, Karen Gronquist, Pam Kuhn, Pat and Jim Crouch and their cousin Dennis Van Etta of Sunnyside, Wash. In the older John Schmid, Redmond, had seen on the way to Washington, D C. He also had slides of the dedication ceremony of the 4-H Club Foundation building In which President Eisenhower and Secretary of Agriculture Benson took part. A visit to Mount Vernon was also a highlight of the eventful week. Sightseeing trips in Philadel phia and New York completed the foursome's homeward jour ney. It is quite a rare coincidence that both boys of the Oregon delegation have received ap pointments in the military forces. Dean Anderson, Portland, left the group at Chicago to fly to Colorado Springs, Colorado to en roll in the Air Force Academy. Karl left for West Point on Sun day evening to enroll in the famous army academy. Karl urged the young 4-H boys and girls present to stick with 4-H and keep the National Club Conference in mind as their final goal. He expressed thanks to his parents, Mr and Mrs Harold Beach; the 4-H leaders and county agents he had worked under and gave them credit for making possible all the 4-H hon ors that had come to him. I think everyone there felt a surge a pride that Morrow county had a part in producing such a fine example of young manhood as our Karl Beach. Mrs Elvin Ely took her daugh ter Eileen to Cannon Beach Bible Conference Monday where she will spend the next eight weeks. Mrs Frank Parmer and daughter Kathy accompanied them.
