Heppnek Gazette lone Garden Club By ECHO PALMATEER The lone Garden club met at the home of Mrs Walter Dobvns Tuesday, June 9 with a picnic dinner at noon. At the business meeting It was voted to give $1 to the Willamette National cem etery fund and $1 to the Clair Hanely fund, a scholarship fund lor students studying horticul ture. Mrs William Rawlins and Mrs Elbe Akers will visit the nursing home in the Pioneer Memorial hospital, June 15. I nose making corsages for the P-TA installation were Mrs A W McLeod, Mrs Phil Emert, Mrs O L Lundell, Mrs Carl Bergstrom, and Mrs Walter Dobyns. Mrs Ernest Heliker gave a talk on the shady garden and named plants that grow well in shade and partial shade. Mrs Rawlins the outgoing pres ident, Introduced the incoming officers who were Mrs Fredrick Martin, president; Mrs Phil Em ert, vice president; Mrs Elbe Akers, secretary and Mrs Edith Nichoson, treasurer. Mrs Martin named the following committees for the year: program Mrs Em ert, Mrs Rawlins and Mrs Mar tin; year book Mrs Rawlins, Mrs Walter Dobyns and Mrs Frances Piper; flower show Mrs Rawlins, Mrs Edith Nicho son, Mrs Ernest Heliker and Mrs A W McLeod; publicity Mrs O L Lundell, posters, Mrs Echo Palmateer, newspaper and Mrs Kathryn Yarnell, telephone; membership Mrs McLeod, Mrs Dale Ray, and Mrs Carl Berg strom; books and supplies Mrs Heliker; scrap book, Mrs Lun dell; Christmas project and Twelveth Night Mrs Rawlins, Mrs Heliker and Mrs Ralph Crum; corsages and arrange ments Mrs Walter Dobyns, Mrs Akers, Mrs Crum and Mrs Nicho son; Junior gardners, Mrs Raw lins and Mrs Crum; Sunshine Mrs Frances Piper and Mrs Nich oson. Members wore hats to the meeting which they made from articles grown in their yards and gardens. Those from here who attended the wedding of Paul Barnett and Miss Carolyn Loftin at the Meth odist church in Gresham Friday, June 12 were Mr and Mrs Ray Barnett, Mr and Mrs Roy Lind strom and family, Harold Holtz, Rollo Crawford and Mrs Delia Corson all of lone; David Bar-' nett and daughters, Debbie and Cynthia of Heppner and Mr and Mrs Vernon Aune of Seattle. The young couple will make their home in Gresham where he is a bus driver. Mrs Ida Coleman, Mrs Delbert Emert and daughter, Mary of lone and Mrs Leonard Schwarz of Heppner made a trip over the weekend to Klamath Falls where they brought back Ann Belle Coleman and Len Ray Schwarz students of Oregon Tech. They stopped at Peterson's Rock Gard ens near Redmond on their way back. Mr and Mrs Milton Morgan left Monday morning for Port land. Jerry Bristow, who has been teaching in the Brookings schools, is home for the summer. Those from here who rode in the pony express from Board- man to Blalock with the Ar lington Saddle Club were John Eubanks and daughter, Sandra and Don Linnell, Lee Pettyjohn and daughter, Nancy of Arling ton also rode. The Saddle club picked up the mail from the Sage Riders at Boardman and were attacked by the Indians there. There were 18 riders and they rode 36 miles and averaged 22 miles an hour. They left Board man at 2:20 P M and were es corted by state police. The mail left Meacham at 9 a m. Others from here who saw the riders were Mr and Mrs C E Brenner, Judy Eubanks, Wallace Mat thews and daughters, Bernice and Denice; Donald Eubanks, Lindsay Kincaid, Judy Mason, Mr and Mrs Franklin Ely and Cynthia Crawford and Steven Ely, Mrs John Eubanks and Don Linnell and children and Sherrie Simmons. Judy Eubanks of Portland Is visiting her uncle and aunt, Mr and Mrs C E Brenner. Steven Ely of Portland is visit ing his grandparents, Mr and Mrs Franklin Ely. Judy Mason is staying at the Lewis Halvorsen home and is working at the county agent's office in Heppner. She has com pleted her junior year at Pacific University. Girls attending the grand as sembly of Rainbow Girls at La Grande this week are Linda Halvorsen, Michelle Morrison and Dalene McDonald. Mrs Ray Barnett was honor ed with a birthday party at her home Tuesday afternoon, June 9. Others present were Mrs Jos ephine Buchanan of Irrigon; Mrs Ed Smith of Hermiston; Mrs James Riley; Mrs Anna M Ball; Mrs Delia Corson; Mrs Ruby Nichols and Mrs Monetta Aid rich. Mrs Aldrich made the cake which was in the shape of a basket filled with flowers. Mr and Mrs Herbert Ekstrom attended the funeral services of his brother-in-law, A Alplanalp in Beaverton, June 6. Mr Alplan alp died from injuries received in a mill accident. Mrs Emil Oelschlager of Ken yon, Minnesota is visiting her sister and family, Mr and Mrs Melvin Melena. Miss Shirlee McGreer, daugh ter of Mr and Mrs Verner Troed son and a teacher in the Spring field schools, left by plane Fri day of last week for Tennessee where she will spend the rest of this month and will attend a musical festival. Keith Roundy of Kennewick, Wash is working during the summer at the Clara Kincaid ranch. Bank Opens Open house was held in the new lone branch of the Eastern Oregon here Saturday, June 13, 2 to 5 p m. The rooms were filled with flowers from individ uals and organizations. A large crowd attended. Gifts were avail able and refreshments were serv ed. The bank opened Monday, June 15 with banking hours Monday through Friday 9 to 1 p m and Saturdays 9 to 12. The Maranatha club met at the home of Mrs Marion Palmer Wednesday afternoon, June 10 with Mrs Harold Dobyns as co- hostess. It was decided to have a reception for Rev and Mrs Rod MacKenzie, July 12. Rev Mac Kenzie is the new minister at the Community church. Mrs Alfred Nelson gave a very interesting report on the Congre gational state convention in Portland in May. After a busi ness meeting conducted by Mrs Palmer, vice president, a hand kerchief shower was given in honor of Mrs Grace Ware. Mrs Walter Dobyns, Bonnie Akers and Kathy Keene assisted with the gifts. Mrs Ware was also presented with a gift from the club. She is leaving June 27 for Morton, Wash, to make her home near her son-in-law and daugh ter, Mr and Mrs G V Crumb. Recent visitors at the Milton Morgan home were Mr and Mrs Milton Downing and Mr and Mrs Raymond Downing and Steve and Carolyn of Hood River. Leslie Madden returned home last week from Ontario where he visited relatives and friends. Mrs Kathryn Yarnell returned home last week from Madras where she visited her son and family, Mr and Mrs Clifford Yar nell. She also visited in Bend and Redmond. Mrs Norman Nelson was elec ted president of the Topic club at a meeting Friday afternoon, June 12 at the home of Mrs Victor Rietmann. Other officers elected were Mrs Walter Jacobs, vice president and Mrs Garry Tullis, secretary-treasurer. Mrs Dixon Smith is the outgoing president. The roll call was an swered by members giving a book shower to the public li brary. Mrs William Rawlins gave a very interesting report on the book, Masters of Deceit by J Edgar Hoover. The Charles Hudsons have pur chased the Minnie Forbes house on Main Street. Mr and Mrs Francis Rieth of Harrington, Wash spent the weekend with his mother, Mrs Ellen Rieth and sister, Mrs Stella O'Meara. Mrs Rieth was a pat ient in the Pioneer Memorial hos pital a few days last week. Robyn Yarnell of Madras is visiting her grandmother, Mrs Kathryn Yarnell. Those from here who took first communion in the St Patrick's Catholic church in Heppner Sun day morning were Nancy Baker, Joseph McElligott and Gene Crowell. Mr and Mrs Fred Miller of Osburn, Idaho spent the week end with their daughter and family, Mr and Mrs Edward Pat ton near Heppner Junction. They were on their way home from a trip into Kansas. Mrs Miller is the former Mabel Cool. Mr and Mrs John Armington and daughters left last week for their home in Los Angeles. Mrs Armington and daughters spent a few weeks at the home of her parents, Mr and Mrs Dale Ray. Other visitors at the Ray home last week were the son, Claude Brashers of Lyle, Wash, and Mrs Dollman and daughter of Hood River. Mrs Rose Doherty of Pendle ton was a weekend visitor here. Mrs Wallace Matthews and daughters returned home last week from Roseburg. Her niece, Sherrie Simmons, returned home with her for a visit. Bonnie Crum returned home last week from the Northwest Nazarene college where she has been a student. Jeanette Stew ard of Blackfoot, Idaho came home with her for a visit. Mr and Mrs Larry Kegale and fam ily of Hood River were also vis itors at the Ralph Crum home. Other college students return ing home for the summer are: from University of Oregon Lar ry Rietmann, Sharon Cutsforth and Mardine Baker; from EOCE, Robert Hubbard, Bill Salter, and Kay Sherer; from Oregon Tech, Loy Keene, Keith Rea, Paul Mil ler and Ann Belle Coleman; Wil lamette University, Gerry White. Mr and Mrs Keith Rea and son are living in Umatilla where he is employed at the grain ele vator at Patterson. Mr and Mrs Cleo Drake and grandson, Michael Rowell spent Saturday in Pendleton . where they visited their daughter, Mrs Ray Turner who is a patient in the St Anthony's hospital there. Patty Holt of Butter Creek was a visitor at the Ted Palmateer home one day last week. G A Petteys is a patient in the Pioneer Memorial hospital. James Monroe has been hired to teach in the grades in the lone schools. 49 children attended the Daily Vacation Bible school at the Bap tist church Monday, June 15. Rev James Riley, pastor of the Baptist church is the director; Mrs Ruby Nichols teaches the beginners with Mrs James Riley, Mrs Ralph Crum, Trova Rigby and Mrs Carl Marquardt; Mrs Monetta Aldrich teaches the pri mary class with Steve Riley as a helper; Mrs Anna M Ball is the junior teacher; Sherry Corley the secretary and Mrs Marquardt the musician. The school will end Friday, June 20 with a program. Mrs Pete Cannon entertained the bridge club at her home Wednesday evening, June 10. The program for the afternoon was as follows: prelude, Mrs Betty Marquardt. Call to wor ship and invocation, Charles Knox of Heppner Chri s 1 1 a n church; hymn "Take my life and let it be"; scripture reading by Jim Pfouts and pastoral pray er also by Jim Pfouts; followed by a solo, "Just for today" by piiylis Nolan, followed by the ordination sermon by Howard Larson. Vernon Munkers, read the letters of recommendation, after which the congregation sang "O Master, let me Walk With Thee." Following this, the service of ordination was held: first the charge to the ordained by Dr Rice, Laying on of the hands, and ordination prayer by Howard Larson: the charge to Mrs Campbell was given by Mrs Ward Rice, and prayer of con secration, by Mrs Ward Rice, and the closing was with a solo, "In Love Abiding" by Phyllis Nolan and benediction. She is employed at the St Helena sanatarian in Richmond. The Salters had a family reunion in the city park Sunday. The rooms were decorated with yel low and white theme, with the main table centered by a beaut iful decorated cake presented by the church at Glenwood where Don has been serving as a stu dent pastor. This was also In yellow, red and white, and was in the form of a Holy Bible with an appropriate scripture verse The tea table was centered with a dark cake decorated with a Bible verse and adorned with white roses. From this table the tea and coffee was served, with the punch being served from an adjoining table decorated with yellow rose buds and a crystal punch bowl. Those serving were: Mrs Vernon Munkers, Mrs Ber iha Hunt, Mrs M V Nolan, Mrs Franklin Miles, Mrs Mae Camp bell of Lexington, Mrs C N Jones of Heppner, and Mrs Harry Blak ely, Mrs Rasar Mrs Rita Dibble of Glenwood church and Mrs R D Underwood of Portland. The Wo men's Fellowship group of the Lexington Christian church was in charge of the reception with Rena and Betty Marquardt as co-chairman for the affair. Mr O W Cutsforth flew to On- tario, on Sunday morning where he met Mr Howard Larson bring ing him here and after the ser vice returned with him to On tario. He was accompanied on the return trip by Mrs O W Cutsforth. Mr and Mrs C C Jones and children were Portland business visitors on Monday. Mr and Mrs E E Peck were Portland visitors over the week end. . The Ken Marshall and the Ken Palmer families were visitors at Lehman Springs Sunday.
