Heppner gazette-Time Heppner, Oregon, Thursday, April 9, 1959 Centennial Dance Draws Big Crowd At lone Saturday , By ECHO PALMATEEH The Centennial dance sponsor ed by the Auxiliary of Pioneer Memorial hospital at the Legion hall Saturday night was very successful. For the entertainment dancing was given by Mr and Mrs Joe Hausler; a Can Can dance by Mary Emert, Linda Hams and Brenda Town send; and a square dance by Mr and Mrs Bill Collins, Mr and Mrs James Driscoll, Mr and Mrs Bill Heath and Mr and Mrs Bruce Lindsay. A grand march was held and prizes were awarded for the best centennial costume worn by the women were given to Mrs Arthur Warren, 1st; Mrs James Lindsay, 2nd and Mrs Del bert Vinson 3rd. There were many in centennial dresses and men wore beards and centennial ties. A country doctor, sheriff and parson were there to render any assistance. Mrs Garland Swanson was the general chairman assisted by her other chairmen. Duke Sullivan and his orchestra of Pendleton furnished the music. Refresh ments were served throughout the evening. Mrs Fred Miller of Osburn, Ida ho was a visitor here last week. She visited her daughter and family, Mr and Mrs Ed Patton near Heppner Junction. Mrs Mil ler is the former Mabel Cool. Mrs Cecil Thorne and Mrs Gor don White attended the 8 et 40 meeting of the American Legion auxiliary in Pendleton Friday evening of last week. The state department officers were present at the meeting. Mr and Mrs Lawrence Balmer of Salem visited her brother and family, Mr and Mrs Garry Tullis, Sunday. Mr and Mrs Delmer Crawford and daughters spent Sunday at the Harlan Crawford home near Echo. Harlan Crawford broke his arm at his farm last week. Mr and Mrs Milton Morgan and son, Gary, were Portland visitors the first of the week. Mr and Mrs Holmes Gabbert and Mrs Grace Woods returned home last week from a trip around the world. Mrs Joseph Kalister returned to her home in St Louis, Missouri Monday. She went by plane from Portland. Mrs Robert Jepsen and child ren spent the weekend in Pendle ton with her parents, Mr and Mrs C L Lieuallen. Mrs John Proudfoot gave a din ner the evening of March 24 in honor of the 10th birthday of her daughter, Pamela. Guests present were Berniece and Deniece Mat thews, Cathy Hausler, Karen Nel son and Susan Baker. April 19 A farewell reception for Rev and Mrs Floyd Bailey in the Community church parlors in the afternoon with a potluck dinner following the church services. Mr and Mrs John Skuzeski and sons of Portland were recent vis itors at the home of her father, ' Henry Peterson, and other rela tives. Mr and Mrs Tad Hardesty and children of Eugene recently vis ited her parents, Mr and Mrs Walter Dobyns. She also attended the funeral services of Mrs Noel Dobyns. Mr and Mrs Robert Bailey and sons moved to Union Saturday of last week. Mrs Mabel Cotter is a patient in the Pioneer Memorial hospit al where she underwent surgery last week. The Great Decisions meeting was held at the Fannie Griffith home Friday afternoon of last week. Mrs Ernest Hellker left for Seattle last week. She was ac companied by Mrs Pearl Devine of Heppner. Mrs Cleo Drake spent a few days last week in Pendleton where she received medical treatment and visited her daugh ter and family, Mr and Mrs Ray Turner. Mr and Mrs Ralph Crum at tended the funeral services of Wesley Andrews in The Dalles Tuesday. Andrews was a cousin of Mrs Crum. He was killed In an auto accident in LaGrande last week. Mr9 Charles McElhinny of Sa lem visited her daughter and family, Mr and Mrs Norman Nel son last week. Mr and Mrs Gordon White took their son, Gerry, to Salem over the weekend to resume his stud ies at Willamette University. Mrs Ed Baker was elected chairman of the lone Extension Unit at a meeting at the home of Mrs Arthur Warren Thursday afternoon, April 2. Other officers elected were Mrs Warren, vice chairman and Mrs Leland Mc Kinney, secretary and treasurer. At the meeting conducted by Mrs j James Pettyjohn, chairman, fur-1 ther plans were made for the Homemakers Festival to be held j at wuiows grange nan in lone April 30. There were 14 members present. Refreshments were serv ed by Mrs Warren and Mrs Petty john. The next meeting will be held at the home of Mrs Norman Nelson on barbequing. Mrs Omar RIetmann and Mrs Carl Bergstrom entertained the Eastern Star social club at a luncheon at the Rietmann home Wednesday, April 1. There were 18 present. Mrs Robert DeSpain entertain ed the bridge club at her home Friday evening, April 3. Those receiving prizes were Mrs Walter Jacobs, high; Pete Cannon, 2nd high and Mrs David McLeod, low. At the meeting of Bunchgrass Rebekah lodge Thursday evening of last week, Mrs Cecil Thorne and Mrs Ernest Hellker were elec ted delegates to the Rebekah As sembly to be held in May. Mrs Wallace Matthews and Mrs Har vey Ring were elected as alter nates. A party was given in hon or of Louis Jackson who is leav ing for Welser, Idaho this month to make his home. He was pre sented with a gift Refreshments were served by Mrs Wallace Mat thews, Mrs David RIetmann and Mrs Adon Hamlett Mrs Mary Swanson returned home from Portland and Salem Friday of last week. She came from Portland with Mr and Mrs Kenneth Smouse. Mrs Anne Smouse of Heppner also accom panied them. The Valby Lutheran Mission ary Society held their meeting Sunday afternoon at the home of Mr and Mrs Donald Peterson. At the meeting conducted by Mrs Ben Anderson, president, the va cation Bible school at Heppner was discussed. Rev John Rydgren gave a talk on the American Lutheran missionaries. Refresh ments were served after the meeting. Mr and Mrs Ted Hewitt and daughters are visiting in Cen tralia, Wash.
