Ronald Black, FFA, instructor, presented the following awards: Kurt Gantenbein, awards for dairy farming and water con trol on the farm; Dean King, farm mechanics; Bill Getz, first Safeway Greenhand award, and Jim Miller, second. Honorary memberships were presented to Mrs Ronald Black, who has assisted the chapter with the annual banquet for the past 15 years; bigvald Aase, school superintendent, who has aided the chapter In many pro tects the past two years: ana Rov Partlow, who was the first FFA state farmer from Board man, and who also has aided the chapter In many ways. McCoy is chairman of the new county unit school board. Other guests were, Mrs Merrill E Shaw, Mrs Ronald Black, Mr and Mrs Roy serving were, Carolyn Baker, Barbara Anderegg, Susan Part low, Shirley Earwood, Minnie Hodges and Evangelina Pedraza. TSgt James Kissire of Pen dleton, sector sereeant of the Ground Observer Corps for this area, called a meetine of the GOC at the home of Mrs Sig- vald Aase Thursday afternoon to explain why the GOC will be inactivated Jan 31. 1959. Kis sire explained that the decision to relieve the corps memDers from active participation on the air defense team is based on three considerations: 1. The present radar network and its further expansion and improve ment that will be accomplished by January gives assurance xnai an enemy bomber can be detec ted and identified before it reach es the borders of the United States. Kissire said this had all been explained in a letter from Lt Gen J M Atkinson, USAF commander, and referred to the Distant Early Warning Line stretching across the Arctic and its extensions by radar equipped planes and ships out in the Pa cific and Atlantic Oceans, a sec ondary early warning radar chain across mid-Canada known as the Mid-Canada Radar Line, and the installation of more and better radar within the U S plus the radar equipped planes and ships which extend our cov erage off our coasts several hun dred miles. 2. The increasing speeds of potential enemy bom bers and our own fighter inter ceptors make it necessary that we develop an automatic means for processing air deiense aaia within the continually reducing time limits. 3. Mrs Rollln Bishop was hostess for the County extension Unit at her home Tuesday for an all day meeting. Mrs Walter Hayes was co-hostess. Mrs Harold Gau ger and Mrs Wayne Kuhn were leaders, subject of the meeting being "Holiday Happiness". The ladies were instructed in making colored candles from bees wax, and each one present made a cor sage from duck and pheasant feathers. State patrolman Ralph Pope from Arlington was present to answer questions on the legal procedure of the unit getting Christmas trees for sale. Mrs Bishop won the door prize. The next meeting will be a Christmas party with exchange of gifts at the home of Mrs Claud Worden, Dec 2 at 2 p m. The Ladies Aid Society of Com munity church met Wednesday at the home of Mrs Bob Miller, with Mrs Russell Miller as co- hostess.
