SCHOOLBOOKS ADOPTED Adontion of textbooks for pub lic grade and high schools for the six year period, beginning July 1, 1959, was announced Wednesday bv the state Board of Textbook Commissioners. Local school districts will have to choose their books from the list. More than 300 teachers took part in the selection. John M Miller, director of teacher education at Eastern Ore eon Colleee of Education, is chairman of the Textbook Com mission. VETERANS' HOME LOANS UP The average ex-GI with an Oregon veterans' farm and home loan paid a property tax of $168 this year, as compared to $145 last year and $135 in 1956. The Department of Veterans Affairs has Just finished paying the 1958-59 taxes on properties of World War II and Korean veterans who have state loans. BANKING LAW TEST CASE Gov Robert D Holmes, Gov elect, Mark Hatfield, State Treas urer, Sig Unander and State Rankin? Commissioner J Fritz Slade have been named defen dants In a Circuit Court test case of the Oregon consumer finance act. Joseph D Fulop, Portland busi nessman, has challenged the con stitutionalltv of the act. An an- plication to operate a small loan business, the Economy Finance Company, was rejected by Slade. Holmes, Hatfield and Unander make up the board. Fulop said the act was an at tempt to relegate legislative au thority to an administrative of ficial. 1 SICK PAY CLEARED School boards of Oreeon are required by law to allow at least 10 days sick leave at full pay each year for all permanent full time school district employees, Attorney General Robert Y Thornton ruled this week. The ruling had been requested by the District Attorney of Mor row County whose problem was whether bus drivers and school lunch program workers were en titled to sick leave. The Attorney general said a permanent full-time employee is one who is employed for a year or an indefinite period, whose wages can be computed on an hourly or dally basis, and who devotes most of his labors to school employment. Small amounts of Vitamin K5 added to mushroom sauce, crab meat, cottage cheese, frankfur ters, table syrup and strawberry jam greatly delayed spoilage. Use of natural food additives as preservatives increases food value, and prolongs shelf life, according to Dr H Y Yang, food technologist and author of a re cent article in Food Technology magazine. Some chemicals un authorized as food preservatives may be harmful to the consumer or affect food quality, he says. Vitamin K5 shows definite promise in preserving fruit made with artificial sweeteners. Sugar, when added to fruits, acts as a preservative and helps prevent molds. But low calorie sugarless fruits spoil quickly unless refrig erated. Vitamin K5 would also be heloful in helDinc prevent food spoilage in unused portions of food. Scientists are also seek ing new ways to preserve foods in areas of the world without refrigeration. How Vitamin K5 prevents sDoilaee is not known, says Yane. However, some scientists believe that the vitamin when combined with water produces an "inter mediate" compound that kills the spoilage micro-organisms. Natural foods high In Vitamin K5 include spinach, kale, egg yolk, liver, cheese and tomatoes. Alfalfa is another high source of the vitamin. A light tan pow der, the Vitamin K5 in OSC tests was mixed with water and added to foods in varying amounts. Then foods were stored. In previous work at OSC, Vita min K5 has been used success fully to preserve wines. It aids in fermentation of the juices, but prevents "secondary fermenta tion" or souring. Later tests will be' made with fruits such as Drunes. berries, cherries and sea foods, including oysters and shrimp.
