CAPITAL PARADE (Continued ttom page 2) INS AND OUTS For the first seven days after general election results were known the announcement of in tended Republican appointments did not keep pace with resig nations from Democratic state officals appointed by Governor Holmes. Within 36 hours after the polls closed Robert J Steward, Ore gon's director of agriculture, had dispatched an amicable letter of resignation to Mr Hatfield. How ard Morgan, public utilities com missioner, was next with James Johnson, motor vehicle director following. Others have stated they will resign next week. Before leaving Thursday with Mrs Hatfield for a short visit in California, Mr Hatfield an nounced the selection of three members of his official family. Loren D Hicks, Salem, will be his legal counsel; Miss Leolyn Barnett, who began state work 30 years ago, and Mrs J L Sleg mund, who for two sessions of the Legislature was Hatfield's secretary, will be in tne new gov ernor's front office. HATFIELD APPOINTS Governor Elect Mark Hatfield had his happy obligation of se lecting some 600 Republicans to replace incumbent Democrats, made much easier when Demo cratic voters defeated many cap able Republicans for re-election. Thpn there were a number of very efficient Republicans who elected not to swim against what they saw as a westward-sweeping Bourbon tide. In the later category are several highly ef ficient persons with extensivle legislative experience and know ledge of state affairs. Outstanding is the political career of Senator Howard C Bel ton, Canby, who has served in Turkey And All L L C4rSi ' To go with that handsome turkey for Thanksgiving dinner you uhould have the prettiest trimmings possible. A good idea which saves both table space and preparation and serving time is to combine the appetizer and salad courses. Florida grapefruit are in markets in good supply now, just in time for festive holiday use. Their juicy tart flavor makes them a good choice with heavy meals. Here's how to prepare a tempting combination appetizer and salad served in grapefruit shells. Florida Appetizer-Salad Combo 3 Florida grapefruit, chilled Salad greens 4 Florida oranges, sectioned 2 Florida avocados Cut Florida grapefruit in half. Cut around each section, loosen ing fruit from membrane. Remove sections. Cut out core and dividing membrane. Combine grapefruit and orange sections. Line grapefruit shells with salad greens; spoon in combined sec tions. Cut Florida avocados in half lengthwise; remove pit. Peel skin from halves; dice avocado. Dip in citrus juice to prevent discoloration. Spoon diced avocado on top of each salad. Serve with French Dressing. YIELD: 6 servings, 13 regular- and three special ses sions of the Oregon Legislature, being President of the Senate In 1945. The August senator could do better than a creditable job In anv Meh Rtate office. He has extensive and attractive farming interests, ueiore tne ena or tne 1957 session he announced that he was retiring from political life. Although his services would be very valuable to the state it is unlikely that he couud be per suaded to take a state post. Senator Rudle Wilhelm, Jr has just about the same problem ex cept that his Interests are com mercial. He was speaker of the House in 1953. He is young, just past 40, also could fill any state office hetter than creditably. Ru mor is that he might be pressed into accepting the Secretary of State post. There is a ditto on the above as Senator Lee V Ohmart, Salem, who has a record of four hard working years in the Legislature where he became a vaiuea tax analyst, heading many success ful "conference committees. We would like to guess him into a chair in the State Tax Commis sion, along with Senator Anthony Yturri, Ontario, a very success ful attorney, who made more than a favorable impression on seasoned legislators when he served in the 1957 regular and the special sessions. PROFESSOR-GOVERNOR Frowns and scowls with cuss words, in the old days met any. suggestion of nominating a pro fessor for any office that the people would vote on. Loren Hicks might inform his boss that this is 'laesa majestas but Oregon Is due to have a sec ond governor who was a profes sor. Tlch Tlch and gaboo. James Wlthycombe, elected In 1914 and re elected in 1918 was tho first Just in case you didn't read much campaign literature, Mark will be the second, inis snoum be scrolled, framed and sent to Tammany Hall. LEXINGTON LIVESTOCK CLUB The October meeting of the Lexington Livestock club was hpiH at the Ken Palmer home. There were 12 members present. New officers and leaders lor the comine vear were elected. They are president, Dennis Do- herty; vice presiaem, Kn Beach; secretary, and reporter, Janet Palmer; leaders, Roy Mar tin and Ken Peck. The November meeting was held In the Ken Peck home. Seventeen members were present. The members discussed the breaking up of the club, as there is a possibility of five new mem bers coming in. The club mem bers filled out their enrollment carls.
