The tea table was covered with a pink lace cloth centered with a bouquet of pink chrysanthe mums. The flower arrangements were given by Vera Rietmann. Those pouring during the af ternoon were Mrs Clarence Bren ner, Mrs Dallas Shockley, Mrs James Lindsay, Mrs Norman Nel son, Mrs David Baker and Mrs Lee Palmer. Out of town guests were Mrs Harry Dinges, Mrs Ted Smith, Mrs Blanche Brown all of Hepp ner and Miss Marja Vlrkkala of Finland, who is a guest at the Markham Baker home. lone Sorority Meets At Scrivner Home The Beta Omega chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha met at the home of Mrs Bill Scrivner In Heppner on Wednesday, Sept 17. Games were played during the evening with Mrs Eldon Padberg and Mrs Charles Doherty receiv ing prizes. Gifts were presented to Mrs Joe Hausler, Mrs Delmar Bus chke, Mrs Kenneth Cutsforth, Mrs Robert Peterson, Mrs Oscar George and Mrs Dallas Shockley. Refreshments were served from a beautifully decorated tea table. Assisting the hostess for the ev ening were Mrs Delmar Buschke and Mrs Kenneth Cutsforth. Mrs Gunderson Has High Score At Bridge Mrs Alex Thompson entertain ed the Renegers bridge club last Wednesday evening at her home. Those attending were Mrs Al len Case, Mrs La Verne Van Mar ter, Mrs William Labhart, Mrs Eddie Gunderson, Mrs Richard Meador, Mrs William Barratt, Mrs Frank Anderson, Mrs Paul Webb, Mrs James J Farley, Mrs Gordon Pratt and Mrs Gene Hall. Sans Souci Rebekahs Plan For Visitation Sans Souci Rebekah lodge No 33 met Friday, Sept 19 at the IOOF hall for their regular meet ing. There were 32 members ana one visitor attending. Reports were made on tne dis trict convention of district no 20 at Hardman on Monday, Sept 15 and plans were made for the visitation of Mrs Edna Oster, president of the Rebekah Assem bly of Oregon, to the Heppner lodge on Friday, October 17. Balloting on candidates to be come members by initiation at that time was held and report ing of members 111 or In distress was given. A volunteer committee to visit the hospital patients later in the month was accepted. Immediately following the husiness meeting, the officers and drill team practiced for the ensuing initiation and then all the members Joined In tne din ing room around a gaily decor ated table for birthday cakes tea and coffee that was served by the hostesses, Mrs Leona Mc Lachlan and Melba Quacken bush. Alice Peterson Guest Of Honor At Shower Miss Alice Peterson, whose marriage to Darrell Ployhar will be an event of Monday, uctoDer 6, was honored with a bridal shower Monday evening at All Saints EDiscopal parish house with Mrs Frank Ayers and Mrs Clarence Johnson as hostesses. Mrs Fred Hoskins sang, ac companied by Mrs J O Turner, who also played incidental music during the tea hour. Miss Jean Moe and Miss Ruth Peterson as sisted with the gifts and greeted the over 50 guests who attended. On the gift table were shower decorations in pink and mint green and the tea table was cov ered with a white cloth and cen tered with an arrangement of silver bells, pink roses and green candles, made by Mrs Helen Cox. Mrs Ture Peterson and Mrs Elmer Moe poured. LEXINGTON Mr and Mrs George Steagall were visitors in John Day and Spray last week. Birthday Dinner At Gilman Home Sunday Mr and Mrs Walter Gilman entertained at dinner Sunday, on the occassion of Mr Guman s birthday. Guests were Mr and Mrs Miles r.ilman. Mt Vernon, Oregon; Mrs Charles Pope, Vikki and Tim, Ba ker; Mr and Mrs Pete unman, Mr and Mrs Dean Gilman and Mr and Mrs Hank Stotts and Lora Lee of Heppner. Extension Unit Meets At Rhea Creek Hall The Rhea Creek extension unit held its regular meeting Wed nesday, September 3 at the grange hall. This was an organizational meeting and project leaders for the year were selected and the past year's work was reviewed. A potluck dinner was enjoyed and the door prize was won by Mrs John Campbell. "OVER THE TEE CUP" By JACKIE LABHART Over hill. . over dale, we hit the Kinzua trail; and our golf balls went rolling along, up and down, round a tree, from a brand new kind of tee; and our golf balls went rolling along. Then we putt up hill, which took a lot nf skill, and mostly our iudge- ment was wrong. But where e'er we go, you will always know, that our spirit and courage is strong. The "mountain climbers mak ing the trip to the beautiful but hillv Kinzua Country Club last week were: Hester Creswick, Cork Norene, Gene Case, Marie Mc Quarrie, Bonnie Mattoon, Dee Gribble, Velma Glass, Hazel Ma honey, Kay Robinson and myself. After a scrumptious dinner at noon served in their convenient little club house, we played an invigorating 12 holes of golf. They only have a six hole course but those six are "dillys", Their links are nestled right in the mountains and pine trees are practically everywhere you look, including right in front of your ball most of the time. Cork won a prize for carding low net score (they have the cleverest way of figuring a hand icap for just one round of play), and I unconsciously shot low gross score. All in all it was great fun and we are looking forward to their visit wun us the first Tuesday In October. The men's 36 hole fall handi cap tournament has just termi nated and the winners in a field of 35 participants were: low gross, Lowell Gribble; second low gross, Fannie Doherty; iow nei, Judge Carmichael; and second low net, Bob Jepson. The lowest rounds were shot by "Grlb" and tv,i inrHan hnth makine a three over par 32. In the near future the fellows will begin a match play tournament to determine the club champion. Despite the biting winds and ominous clouds we had a ter rific turnout for our ladies day competition Tuesday. Those play ing were Roberta Dougnerty, sue Valentine, Gene Case, Shirley Loyd, Cathy Imus, Bobble Dris coll, Kay Robinson, Delores Mc Dowell, Cork Norene, Marie Mc Quarrie, Inez Meador, Hazel Ma honey, Dee Gribble, Maxine MnC.urdv. Laurel Cannon, Hester Creswick, Doreen Jacobs and this frozen female. New golf balls were awarded to Hester for the drive closest to the pin on No 5; Cathy, Kay and Hazel carded the most sixes; Maxine the most sevens, and Cathy eights. Low net score was by Shirley, shooting a 48 with a 24 handicap. LADIES DAY OBSERVATIONS: Gene shooting her best game of golf, and if she told us once she told us twenty times that she parred No 7 hole (she was just so thrilled she could hardly con tain herself and said she owed it all to her Jacuzzi). . . . saw numerous two eyed, two armed, turquoise hooded golf beaters and they sure looked strange to me. . . newcomers Maxine Gray and Donna McCurdy doing right well for beginners. . . collect ing $2.90, on our penny each putt money making method. . . saw "lumberjack" Marie tear down half a tree to obtain a "twig" with which to stir her coffee Cork carding a "birdy" on No 8 ... we all were glad to have Laurel and Doreen back with us again (and that's quite a trip from where they live). Well this "bird" "wood" pro bably chatter on all day, so be fore our golfing editor gets "teea off" at my "putting" on and on, I had better "approacn tne "green", fill my "cup" and make this "par" for now. This was a cow boy breakfast and was served to about 100 people. At this time the principal was introduced by the chairman of the school board, m v Nolan. Mr Waddill then in troduced the teachers. Except for a light rain shower everyone re ports a fine time. j Mr and Mrs George Irvin and Mr and Mrs Cecil Jones and children were dinner guests of Mr and Mrs Lonnie Henderson on Sunday. Mr and Mrs Leonard Munkers entertained the Lilian C Turner board of directors and their wives on Saturday night at the regular board meeting. At this time Mrs Lorene Ledbetter, co-chairman for the smorgasbord which is be ing planned for Oct 26th at the Lexington Grange hall ave her report. Mrs Munkers later served refreshments to the following: Mr and Mrs Clayton Davis of Pendleton. Mr and Mrs Gene Cutsforth, Mr and Mrs E E Peck, Bill VanWinkle. Vern Nolan, son of Mr and Mrs M V Nolan left on Sunday for Klamath Falls wnere ne plans to attend OTI this coming term. Mr and Mrs Rov Campbell have returned from a visit with their son and family, Mr and Mrs Don Campbell , in Eugene. THE mn stPBPall was a Portland visitor and attended the Lewis and Clark-Portland State Dan game Sunday. Word has been received in Lex of the marriage of Miss Mary Vanwua Hemerv of Santa Ynez, California to Neil Dubbard of Santa Ynez. The ceremony was performed at Las Vegas, Nevada Sept 4. The young couple will make their home in Santa Ynez where they are both employed. Mrs Dubbard is known in Lex ington having spent several sum mers here. She recently came to the U S with her parents from England. Lexington Jack Rabbits met the Irrigon football team on the lrwal field on Friday winning by a score of 37 to 7.
