HEPPNER GA2ETTE-TIMES, Thursday, July 31, 1953 Over The Tee Cup By JACKIE LAB HART I can't seem to see anything clearly In the tea leaves this week; for just when I get ready to write about something I have seen, it turns out to be a mirage seen through the Heppner heat waves. So to preserve my sanity, and to play it safe, I shall dis pense with the tea cup for the rest of the summer. Furthermore, the ladles of the Willow Creek Country Club have also decided to postpone our la dies day competition until school starts; so without all the dam sel's daffy doings, I wouldn't have much to write about. We did have a ladles day Tues day (at least a few of us did) but prizes were not awarded. Veterans' applications must be filed by August 15 with the Bur eau of Reclamation, Ephrata, Washington, to be Included in the public drawing for the lands. Application forms may be obtain ed in Oregon from county veter ans' officers or the state veterans' department in Salem and Port land. The farm units range in size from 71 to 159 Irrigable acres, and will be sold to winners In the public drawing at prices ranging from $1715 to $2687. Veterans must have served for 90 days or more between Sept ember 16, 1940, and January 31,. 1955, to qualify. They must have had at least two years of full time experience and must poss ess assets amounting to at least $8500 in excess of liabilities, of which at least $5000 must be in cash, or must possess at least $7500 in cash. RECORD FRUIT SHIPMENTS In the fiscal year ending June 30 shipments of fresh fruits and vegetables In Oregon totaled 39, 410 cars, second only to the 1950 51 figure by about 1500 cars, the State Agricultural Department reported Thursday The shipments included 24,501 carloads of potatoes, a gain of 1,400 over the preceding year. Shipments of all commodities exceeding the 1956-57 total by 1,800 cars. Last year's totals included: on ions, 4,500 cars; pears, 7,100; ap ples, 1,900; filberts, 700; walnuts, 230. cept Wallowa.
