State Income Tax Traveling Auditors To Start in March A comprehensive program for assisting taxpayers in all parts of Oregon in filing their state in come tax returns has been sched uled by the State Tax Commiss ion from now until the April 15 deadline, according to commiss ion chairman S W Horn. Auditors already are available for such purposes at the com mission's headquarters In Salem and at the Portland branch of fice. Part-time service also will be announced locally by the com mission's branch offices In Astor ia, Bend, Eugene, Klamath Falls, Medford, North Bend, Ontario, Pendleton and Roseburg. Taxpayers who do not need as sistance will also find it advan tageous to file early, Horn em phasized. By taking sufficient I time in preparation, the taxpay er can avoid mistakes and omiss ions which might result in a pen alty or interest charge. Tax Com mission auditors said that late filers make far more mistakes. In addition, the "early bird" taxpayer who is entitled to a re fund on tax withheld from his wages in 1957 will get the refund sooner. Refund returns are hand ; led by the tax commission in the order they are received, conce 'quently the sooner a taxpayer files, the sooner he will get a refund. The first refund check j this year was issued February 14, 'and processing of other returns Is on schedule, Horn said.
