TAX BOARD TO MEET The Legisltive Interim Tax Committee has been called to meet at the Capitol in Salem Friday and Saturday. The two day session, Feb 21 and 22, was called by the acting chairman Sen Walter J Pearson, Portland Democrat. TAX REFUNDS START Fridav mornine the automatic ! check writing machine in the.merce; John G Barnett, Portland statp tax commission started on one of its biggest jobs turning out income tax refunds on 1957 . income taxes. Part of the refunds to most people represent the 20 per cent tax reduction voted by the Legislature to justify the millions "over charged" and pre viously collected. The 20 per cent refund was the result of the stalemate in the Senate of 15 Democrats and 15 Republicans. The Democrats did not want to refund as much as the 20 per cent. The 15 Repub licans wanted to give back more and set their mark for a 30 per cent refund. The 15 Democrats, led by Governor Holmes held for 10 per cent. The 20 per cent re fund was a compromise. OREGON JOB SERVICE Graduates of 160 Oregon high schools last year used the job testing, ' counseling and place ment facilities of the State Em ployment Service. That amounts to two-thirds of the high schools. The total is 10 per cent greater than in 1956. Oregon Conference For Small Business Planned March 13-15 OREGON STATE COLLEGE Oregon will be the first state in the nation next month to have a statewide conference for small business as recommended at the national meeting called last September by President Eisen hower. The state conference on re search and development for the benefit of small business is scheduled March 13 to 15 at Ore gon State college.
