Suicide Rate Down Oregon's Suicide rate dropped last year to a record low of 11.8 per 100,000 of population accord ing to Oregon State Board of Health statistics. The state's average has previ ously been with the top 10 states of the nation. Gilliam County Wins Top Honors In Soil Contest Oregon's champion soil con servation district for 1956-57 and two individuals selected for out standing work in soil and water conservation have been named by Goodyear Tire and Rubber comp any, sponsor of a national soil conservation awards program Gilliam county district, one of 54 soil conservation districts in Oregon, received top honors for the state. Loyd Smith, Mayville, was named by Gilliam county dist rict board of supervisor as t?ie outstanding farmer cooperator. Harold Hatfield of Arlington, was nominated by the winning dist rict to receive the governing board's individual member aw ard. Smith and Hatfield will be guests of the program sponsors on a vacation trip to Wigwam guest resort and Goodyear Farms, Litchfield Park, Ariz., in Novem ber. Gilliam county district and the individual winners will also be presented bronze plaques at annual meeting of the Oregon association of soil conservation districts, November 21 and 22, at Tillamook. The regulations were drawn following a series of six hearings held during the first two weeks of July. They follow the general pattern of proposals presented at the hearings. Only one major change was made from the department's or iginal proposals. This modifies the proposal relating to the pres ence of uninspected meats in any establishment selling in spected meats; this proposal, it developed from the hearings, is not enforceable at this time. As written into the final regulations, the state will require that unin spected meats may be received at slaughter plants only under conditions prescribed by the de partment.
