Nys, Attorney for Executor. ll-15c Research Reports Due at Pendleton Field Day July 2 A high-ranking aide to Secre tary of Agriculture Ezra Benson is scheduled to address Oregon wheat farmers July 2, at the an nual Pendleton branch experi ment station field day. Milan Smith, executive assist ant to Secretary Benson, will speak at the noon lunch at branch station headquarters, 14 miles northeast of Pendleton on the Walla Walla highway. Reports of the station's re search findings during the past year will start at 9 am. and con tinue through the afternoon, ac cording to Merril Oveson, sup erintendent. A crop spraying demonstration by helicopter, tours of green houses where winter-hardiness of grains and other research prob lems are tested, and demonstra tion of a new 4-bottom 2-way plow and an experimental grain drill are scheduled for the morn ing program. A special program for ladies has been arranged this year, Oveson reports. Flower culture, including a demonstration of making flower cuttings, will op en the program. From 11 a.m. to noon, Miss Naida Whybark, home economist for the pregon Wheat Growers League will dem onstrate use of an electronic ov en. Slated for the afternoon is a demonstration of the Bishop sew in techniques. The afternoon field day pro- gram will include reports on chemical removal of cneatgrass from fall-seeded wheat with Sim azin, a chemical import frum Switzerland. The material was applied just before wheat emerg ed last fall. Simazin also shows promise for chemical' summer fallow of wheatlands. Wheat seeding trials with the new Omar and Burt varieties, spring wheat and barley fertil izer trials, weed control in peas, and small grain variety trials will be seen during the tour. Tri als with such special crops as safflower, carrots, sweet corn and lima- beans will be reported Stubble mulch tillage and drill trials are also scheduled. Veteran Loans Mount May was a record-breaking month for loan applications at the Oregon Department of Vet eran Affairs when 921 home and farm loans were sought. The av erage for the six-month period prior to April for application was 574. Veterans are currently ap plying for state loans at the rate of 42 a day. Employment Down Employment in Oregon's non agricultural activities were 2,800 below the 492,400 listed this week a year ago, although there was an increase of 9,000 last mbnth, the state industrial unemploy ment compensation commission reported Monday. The drop is not alone in log ging and lumbering which failed to make the usual April-May gains. Food processing, machin ery manufacturing and paper mills also fell short of 1956 totals as did plywood plants. Paper plants -had 6,800 at work which compared with 7,000 in 1956.
