$100,620. Highest bid was $122,
590. Veteran Loans Mount
May was a record-breaking
month for loan applications at
the Oregon Department of Vet
eran Affairs when 921 home and
farm loans were sought. The av
erage for the six-month period
prior to April for application was
574. Veterans are currently ap
plying for state loans at the rate
of 42 a day.
Employment Down
Employment in Oregon's non
agricultural activities were 2,800
below the 492,400 listed this week
a year ago, although there was
an increase of 9,000 last mbnth,
the state industrial unemploy
ment compensation commission
reported Monday.
The drop is not alone in log
ging and lumbering which failed
to make the usual April-May
gains. Food processing, machin
ery manufacturing and paper
mills also fell short of 1956 totals
as did plywood plants. Paper
plants -had 6,800 at work which
compared with 7,000 in 1956.

New this year is a "No-Stick" can for whole hams. The old
problem of getting meat out of the can has been solved by American
Can Company research. They've developed a special inside enamel
lining which allows the meat to slide freely right out of the can.
You'll find this new convenience feature on earned hams of all
sizes. So now when you buy canned ham, look for the small oval
on the can and you'll know it's a ham packed in on of the new
type containers.
To make meals easy, smart homemakers rely on canned ham
because its solid meat, ready to eat, without waste or shrinkage
It is perfect to serve first hot and glazed, then sliced and genvd
cold. And when the supply dwindles to bits and pieces, you've the
choice makings of hearty salads, casseroles, soups or sandwiches
lor a new and simple glaze:
MARMALADE GLAZED HAM
Spread a thin layer of prepared mustard over ham; then cover
with orange or apricot marmalade. Bake in slow oven (35 F )
basting often with drippings in pan. Allow 25 minutes per pound
for a 3 to 4 pound ham j allow 16 minutes per pound for the larger
hams, spreading the marmalade for only the last hour of baking
