On most farms no bloat was observed on the third day aftter starting the mixture, with only a few scattered cases being observed during the remainder of the bloat season. No cattle were lost from bloat after start ing the peenieillin-salt mixture. Average penicillan-salt con sumption was about .7 ounce per animal per day. However, con sumption varied from farm to reported was 1.37 ounces per ani mal per day. A trial suignth mal per day. A trial using the penicillin-salt mixture was con ducted at Montana State college, seven selected steers known to bloat readily were used in this lest. These steers were grazing Ladine Clover and were checked six times each day, throughout the day for bloat, there was an average of 20 cases of bloat per day for those steers prior to feed ing the penicillin-salt mixture, penicillin-salt feeding was stop- ed and there was a rapid de crease in bloat. On the 5th and (ith 'day there was only one case. Penicillin-salt feeding was stop pod and the number of cases in creased. There were 17 cases of bloat the fourth day after the penicillan-salt feeding was stop ped. All other salt has to be remov ed when feeding the penicillin salt mixture to insure maximum consumption of the mixture. It was concluded that the penicillin-salt mixture was of definite value in reducing the incidence of bloat in cattle grazing legume pastures. There is only one catch to the program and that is the price of the peni- cilllan-salt mixture is exception ally high priced. It would prob ably not be economical as a pre ventive unless considerable trou ble with bloat had been occur ing.
