Heppner, Oregon, Thursday, November 8, 1956 lone Library Receives Benefits From Two Parties By Echo Palmateer Public library benefit parties were given last week. Mrs. Ver ner Troedson and Mrs. Victor Rietmann entertained at the Troedson home Tuesday after noon Oct. 30 with pinochle. There were five tables at play. Those winning prizes were Mrs. Frank lin Lindstrom, high; Mrs. Ted Smith, 2nd high; Mrs. Earl Blake, low; Mrs. Wallace Matthews, 300 "pinochle; Mrs. Arthur Crawford, 100 aces and Mrs. Fred Mankin the door prize. Mrs. Lharies Carlson, Mrs. Wil liam Kawans and Mrs. Koland tergstrom entertained at a coiiee nour at the Carlson home Wed nesday Oct. 31. Invited guests were Mrs. Kaymond Lundell, Mrs. ben akcis, Mrs. Algott Lundell, Mrs. Leonard Carlson, Mrs. Oscar Peterson, Mrs. Etta Huston, Mrs. Donald Peterson, Mrs. Carl Berg strom and Mrs. Louis Carlson. Mrs. Ella Burgoyne returned home from Portland last week where she spent a few days. Rev. and Mrs. Lloyd Knight sent the first of the week at their nome in Corvallos where they went to cast their votes. Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Morgan and daughters judy and Geraldine, Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Bristow and tinaroii trabtree spent the week end in i-ortland. Tliey attended tne Oregon Staie-Wasrungton football game. Mrs. Arthur Keene entertained the extension unit members with a dinner at her home Thursday Nov. 1. The business meeting was held in the afternoon con ducted by Mrs. Roger 'Kincaid, president. Mrs. Arthur Warren and Mrs. Elmer Holtz demon strated making candy of which they mad; several different kinds. There were 17 members and one guest, Mrs. Walter Jep sen, present. Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Yarnell and daughters were recent visi tors at the home of his mother, Mis. Kathryn Yarnell. They enter tained Mrs. Yarnell at a birthday dinner in Pendleton while here. Mr. and Mrs. Paul O'Meara, Miss Margaret O'Meara, and Mrs. Leo Crabtree spent Monday at Wasco where the O'Mearas visi ted relatives. Mrs. Mabel Cotter visited rela tives in The Dalles last week. Clarence and Elmer Holtz went to Forest Grove last week after shrubs to plant. Isew books added to the pub lic library: Balboa, Swordsman and Conquestador by -Riesenberg Jr.; Cobblers Knob, by Jewett; Official Baseball Annual; When the Wind Blows, by Phillips; How to Believe, by Sockman. Hallowe'en Parties Held The youngsters of the com munity enjoyed many parties last wsek. Mrs. Earl McCabe, chair man of the Juniors of the Ameri can Legion Auxiliary, entertained the Juniors and their friends at the Legion hall, with a party Tuesday evening Oct. 30. The children were in Hallowe'en cos tumes. Those receiving prizes on their costumes were: Marilee Leathers, Pamela McCabe, and Janet and Ronnie Palmateer. Games were played and refresh ments of doughnuts and hot chocolate were served. Lona White assisted with the games. Hallowe'en parties were held in the different rooms at the school inging at 8 p. m. Initiation will be held. The public library will be closed Nov. 12 on account of Vet eran's Day. Mrs. Ernest McCabe entertained the Bridge club at her home on Friday evening of last week. Those receiving prizes were Mrs. Delmer Crawtord, high; Mrs. David McLeod, 2nd high and Mrs. Gene Hall, low. Mildred Seehafer spent" last week in The Dalles and with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. G. See hafer in Bickleton, Wash. Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Peterson and son, Gerald, and Mr. and Mrs. Donald Peterson and child ren spent the weekend in Port land and Beaverton. They at tended the baptismal services for Jon Roderick Kvistad, small son of Mr. and Mrs. Rod Kvistad, at the St. Matthew Lutheran church in Beaverton Sunday. Gerald Peterson and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Kvistad were the sponsors. Jon Roderick is the grand son of Mr. Wednesday Oct. 31 and a high and Mrs. Oscar Peterson. Hermiston JO 7-3111 school party at night. These were conducted by the room mothers. Mrs. E. M. Baker's Sunday school class sponsored a UNICEF drive Hallowe'en and took in $28. 30. This is a nation wide United Nations drive to aid the needy children of the world. The child ren were treated to refreshments afterwards at the basement of the Community church. Those assisting Mrs. Baker were Mrs. Lloyd Hovvton, Mrs. Wallace Mat thews, Mrs. Phil Emert, and Mrs. Kenneth Smouse. The class and Mrs. Baker wish to thank all who helped to make this drive a success. The high school students en joyed a potluck dinner In the Community church basement Sunday wening. They were en tertained with games afterwards led by Mrs. Norman Nelson. The little folks were enter tained in the Community church basement Tuesday Oct. 30 with a party. Mrs. Lewis Halvorsen showed films. Sunday school teachers w?re giving the party were Mrs. Walter Roberts, Mrs. Earl McCalw and Mrs. Milton Morgan. Weekend hunting guests at the John Eubanks cabin in the moun tains were Mr. and Mrs. Bill Eu banks and children, Tom White, and John Sanders of Portland, Donald Eubanks and Lee White of Forest Grove and Mr. and Mrs. Howard Eubanks and children of Arlington. Tom White succeed ed in getting an elk. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Morgan and sons of Portland stopped in lone Friday while on their way to Pen dleton to visit friends. Slides were shown on New Guinea at the young peoples meeting at the Naaarene church Sunday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Pettyjohn and son, Jimmy, of The Dalles visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Lindsay Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. John Turner of Baker spent Saturday here with relatives. They attended the funeral services of his brother, Sam Turner, in Heppner Sunday. Rev. E. E. Zachery of Yakima, district superintendent of the Nazarene church delivered the Lexington News By Delpha Jones The Lexington high schoql has started practice on a play "Have a Date" to be given on Novem ber 30th. The characters are the following: Mr. Cole, Hugo Leyva; Mrs. Cole, Dora Sue Davidson; Marylee, Beverly Baker; Carol, Inez M. O'Neal; Barbara, Mau reen Groves; Ellen, Charlene Jones; Arthur Brown, Keith Peck; Bill Porter, Dexter Miles; and Joe Carey, Raymond Schoonover. Mrs. Alonzo Henderson and children have moved into town from the ranch arid will spend the winter here. F. A. Norman Miles of the U. S. Coast Guard is spending a few days visiting with his mother and brother, Mrs. Ethel Dunbar and Dexter Miles. He is stationed in San Francisco, California. Pvt. Gerald Messenger returned to California after a leave spent with his wife, Mrs. Sue Messen ger. Guests at the Gar Leyva's dur ing hunting season have been Jim Lemons and Barrell Wooley of Monroe and Jack Skaggs of Pendleton, and Hugo Leyva of Lakevlew, father ot Gar. All have been staying at the Cutsforth cabin in the mountains. Several people motored to Port land Saturday to attend the game between Lewis & Clark and Whit man college. Some of those going down were Mr. and Mrs. Jom;es Bloodworth, Denny McMil lan, Donald Hunt, Marvin Way, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Mathews, and Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Munkers. Attending the Oregon State game on Saturday were Mr. and Mrs. Don Hatfield, Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Ruhl, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Kilkenny, Mr. and Mrs. Alex Lindsey, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Doherty, and Bill Padberg. for those registered came to the polls cm Tuesday In the Lexing ton voting precinct; of the 266 registered voters there were 240 votes cast.
