This past week organization was completed in the'Irrigon and Boardman com munities while organization is still under way in the lone, Lex ington, and Heppner communi ties. Agricultural clubs organ ized during the week were an Entomology club and livestock club in the Heppner community They Key to an effective 4-H club program is the 4-H adult lea ders. If the start in which they have begun the new club year is an indication, this years 4-H club activities and program should be one of the best yet. Last Thursday evening, .the regu lar meeting of the South Morrow 4-H Council was held at the E. M. Baker farm near lone with 22 4-H leaders present. All leaders par ticipated in discussion for mak ing the club program one of the best yet. A program for the year was approved and plans made for future meetings. The schedule for Miss Barbara Larson, Interna tional Farm Youth Exchange delegate was finished with her appearing in five communities on the28th and 29th. President of the 4-HClub council is Mrs. E. M. Baker, of lone, vice-chairman O. O. Nelson of Lexington, secretary, Mrs. Randall Martin of Heppner, treasurer, Mrs. L. A. McCabe of lone. Arrangements were also made for the annual leader train ing conference which will be held in Heppner on December 7th. All leaders are invited to attend. Miss Esther Tasgerud, state 4-H Exten sion Agent, Oregon State College, will assist with the training con ference. o Monument News Mrs. Art Shamblin, John Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Stewart all of Portland, were Saturday night guests at the Matteson home. June Hutchinson has as house guests her father Joe and Brother Dale Whitakcr, both of Idaho. Earl Fayr and Karol Sweek were up from the valley visiting the Jack Sweeks, Roy Bowmans and the Dale Russells. They all went to Long Creek to visit Earl's mother. Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Sweek and baby of Springfield spent the holidays here with her mother, Mrs. Josephine Schraum and sis ter Mrs. Verne McCarty and fam- LeRoy Buxton of Woodburn spent Thanksgiving with his folks here. Mr. and Mrs. Norris Stubble field purchased a new Plymouth last week. Harold LippeuJ spent some time in Portland getting his new truck fixed up for use on his freight line. Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Kribbs spent Thanksgiving weekend at Lea venworth, Wash, with their daughter and family. Iris Kincaid, and Carry Kribbs drove to John Day on the 23rd to get Mr. and Mrs. Fray. Mrs. Kincaid and Mrs. Fray are sis ters. Gilbert Batty, a former resi dent here, was'married Oct. 26 in Reno. Wave Jackson spent a week in Portland visiting and went on to Salem to attend the wedding on Friday of her son Hugh. I Mr. and Mrs. Tom Stirwalt and family spent Thanksgiving in Redmond. Mr. and Mrs. Herb Hynd and daughter of Cecil spent the week end here with her mother, Mrs. Ida Bleakman and brother Rho Bleakman and family. Sunday was open house at the Saddler home for Mr. and Mrs. Rho Bleakman's silver wedding anniversary. Mrs. Bob Kingman is spending this week in Pilot Rock where her husband is working. Harlen Gentry spent the week end at Heppner with his folks. Mr. and Mrs. Ernie Johnson spent the weekend with Mrs. For rest Noland in Portland. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Martin, Dick, Caroline; Tom Earhardt; 'Mr. and Mrs. Kimmel, Karrie Hooker and others spent Friday and Saturday in Baker at a church meeting. Boyd Hinton drove to Dayville Wednesday morning where he met his sister, Ellie. She visited with her father, Doc. Hinton; aunts Mrs. Henry Durst, Mrs. Earl Marnard and Katie Hinton of Hamilton. Dick Martin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Martin arrived home this week from overseas service. Verne Matteson of Cecil spent Thanksgiving with his folks in town. Mr. and Mrs. Steye Kincaid, Tommy Haywood and Mr. and Mrs- fry of John Day spent the weekend in South Bend visiting another sister of the women. Mr. and Mrs. Victor Wiese and family of Milton-Freewater spent Thanksgiving with her folks the Lee Flemings. The Marvin Saddlers are driv ing a panel car on the Sunday paper route. The M. M. M. club will meet this Thursday at the home of Dor is Capon. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Rounds spent the past week in John Day with her mother, Mrs. Wright. Ed was to have a checkup. Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Reynolds of Prairie City was over Tuesday night when he installed the Le gion officers. The ladies served pie, ice cream and coffee. Cards finished the evening. 0 Heppner High School SCOOP Heppner high is establishing a National Honor Society. The teachers will choose those eligi ble to belong from the junior and senior classes who have grades of 2 or above. Boys who have gone steelhead fishing recently on the Columbia near "Iom's Cabin ' and back of Boardman, are Jim Hayes, Jerry Haguewood, Dick Kononen, Yyle Jensen and Skip Ruhl. Jim Hayes made the only catch of two trips which was one 8 pound steelhead. Basketball practice has been started for two weeks and with two jamborees and one game this week we're hoping our boys will make a good showing. The speech class has been play ing Charades in class which helps them improve their, ges tures and make them relax easily in fron t of a group. Also they have been doing impromtu speec her on agencies of the United Na tions. Lillian Elde and Janet Kendall of the speech class have read to the children at the libr ary for the last two weeks on the Saturday story hour. The students of Heppner high now have a dance band. Endless hours of practice and planning I have gone into the formation of the band. They are open for engagements.
