Instead of exhibiting all during the fair, 4-H club members will show their livestock and poultry during the opening days, accord ing to Cal G. Monroe, state 4-H extension agent. Rabbits will be exhibited the last half of the week. Oregon is one of just six states selected to take part in a national bread baking demonstration con test, Winnifred Gillen, state 4-H extension agent, said. It will be open to both individual and team competition. Later in the year one of the state winners in this demonstration will be picked for a trip to the national 4-H club congress. Child care exhibits, which are completely new at state fair' will feature toys, children's garments and picture scrapbooks made by 4-H club members. The flower arranging contest, which was a new feature last year, is being offered again. It will be September 4 at 2 p. m. The livestock judging contest, which formerly included both dairy and meat animals, has been divided this year. Now there is a separate dairy judging contest. Beef, sheep and swine included in the revised livestock Judging contest. New ruling on 4-H judging teams is that they may be select ed on a county-wide basis. In other years they had to be from the same 4-H club. The 4-H and FFA livestock auc tion will be absent from this year's fair. The change was made because the two youth groups will be showing their ani mals at different times, Monroe explained. Using the same faci lities, 4-H club members will have their stock at the fair grounds from the evening of Sep tember 3 to September 7 and FFA will take over during the last half of the fair. County Agent's News (Continued from Page 2) period is shortened from GO to 50 days, the penalty is 204 pounds of milk. If the dry period is cut to 30 days, the penalty is 691 pounds of milk. No dry period resulted in a penalty of 116,056 pounds of milk. The answer to this problem is to keep record of breeding date, date to turn dry and date to calf, and use them. On irrigated land it is possible now to seed fall alfalfa, clover, or grasses. If done during August or very early September, these crops should produce a full yield next year. At least they will far outyield seedings that are not made until next spring. To be successful seedings must be early enough to get established before late fall freezes. Days are getting shorter the later part of August. Even though days may be warm at noon, hours of light and temperature are reduced. September 10 is about the latest that these seedings shoud be made. Fall seeding of pastures of grass and legumes lets the grass get started during the cool fall and spring weather. Wilt hazard the first year is usually not as great from fall seeded pas tures as from spring seedings. u Mr. and Mrs. Sie Walker of Lebanon were visitors this week in Heppner.
