New First Grade Teacher Named For By Echo Palmateer Mrs. Elva Shannon of La Grande has been elected to teach the first grade in the lone schools for the coming year. She has had experience in Idaho and qualifi cations for teaching in Oregon. She will live in the Paul O'Meara apartment recently vacated by the Chester L. Wards. The afternoon swimming class es have been discontinued but the morning classes are still being conducted and the regular swim ming is still in the afternoon. Construction started on the wading pool Monday and will be finished in ten days. Dr. and Mrs. Chester L. Ward were recent Portland visitors and attended to some school business. They were also in Pendleton on school business. Wren Crawford and son and daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. George Miller and children of .Portland visited at the Wate Crawford and the Delrr.er Craw ford homes last week. Wate Craw ford and Wren Crawford are bro thers. The book, Indigo Bend by Gra ham, has been added to the pub lic library. They all came to the Sam Led better home in Hood River Sun day for a picnic. Mr. Ring joined them there. Bcrnita and Tommy Harris returned to lone with the Rings for a visit. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Buschke and sons of Los Angeles are visit- I ing at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ld Buschke ai Morgan. Mr. Buschke is on the police force in Los Angeles and has a months vacation. He will assist with the harvesting. Dates to remember: July 6, Friday H. E. I His niece, Mrs. Zena Ewing of I Portland, 'also visited him. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Barnett and Mr. and Mrs. Joel Barnett and daughter, spent Sunday in the mountains. . Bonnie Crum and Ivan Akers returned last week from Pinelow, a Nazarene church camp near Spokane where they spent a week, Mrs. Wilfred McKay recently returned from Chewelah, Wash., where she helped her son and family, Mr. and Mrs. Bartlett Mc Kay, pack for their trip to Japan where they will be Missionaries. Mrs. Jerry Cunningham of Seat He is staying at the home of her brother, Ralph Crum. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Sheffel and family of Elkton were recent visi tors at the home of her brother, Claude Riley. The city has made a great im provement by cutting and burn ing weeds and grass along the streets and in one end of the city park. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Jepsen and daughter attended the wedding of Miss Lilias Hynd and Max Cheney in Pendleton June 23. ! Mrs. Fannie Griffith attended the Charles Bartholomew funeral services in Echo Friday July 9. Peggy Botts is visiting relatives in Irrigon. Denny Ellis of Irrigon is staying with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James Botts. Mr. and Mrs. Pete Cannon are the parents of a daughter born July 11 at the Pioneer Memorial hospital in Heppner. Weight 7 lbs. 11 ozs. Mrs. Ada Cannon of Hepp ner and Mrs. Echo Palmateer are the grandparents. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Dobyns and Noel Dobyns are on a week's fishing trip in Canada. Mr. and Mrs. Billy Brashers and son, Tommy, Stevie Murphy and Claude Brashers of Lyle spent Saturday at the Dale Ray home. Around 40 members of the Arnica club and their friends at tended a picnic at Sacajawea park in Washington Sunday. A picnic dinner was served at noon and boating and swimming were also enjoyed. Mrs Dale Ray was hostess at a birthday party in honor of Mrs. Wate Crawford July 9 at the Crawford home. Others present were: Mrs. Milton Morgan, Mrs. Tad Miller, Mrs. Mary Swanson, Mrs. O. L. Lundell, Mrs. G. Her mann, Mrs. Ida Coleman, Mrs. Mabel Cotter and Mrs. Sam Esteb. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Coaters and granddaughter, Jerry Lapp, of Quiney, Wash., and Mrs. Min nie Smith of The Dalles spent the weekend at the Walter Corley home. Jerry Lapp remained for a longer visit. Mr. and Mrs. Adon Hamlett and children returned last week from a trip to Palo Alto, Calif., where they visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Webster Hamlett. The elder Mr. Hamlett has been ill but is improving. His sister, Mrs. Am anda Harrison of Kansas also visited him, she returned to lone , and then went to Ellensberg, j Wash., to visit relatives. Rev. and Mrs. Alfred Shirley are ! both patients in The Dalles hospi tal. He underwent surgery Tues day of last week. Fredrick Martin had charge of the services at the Community church Sunday in the absence of Mr. Shirley, Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Ely spent a few days with their son and family, "Mr. and Mrs. Fayne Ely at Forest Grove. Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Matthews and daughters and II. O. Mr. and Mrs. Fredrick Martin and children returned home Wed nesday of last week from Rocka way, where Mrs. Martin and their children attended the Junior Methodist church camp at Camp McGruder. Mrs. Martin was one of the counsellors and the child ren, Melvin, Jean and Ralph at tended the school. There were 65 attending. Mr. Martin spent last weekend there and then the fam ily went to Astoria to visit her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Hor ton and to West Linn to visit rela tives. Kenneth Lundell of Oakland, Calif., is visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Lundell. He came up with Lyle (Pinky) Allyn who spent a week visiting in Oakland. Mrs. Roger Allen and sons are picking berries on the ranch in Sandy. Weekend visitors at the Fred rick Martin home were Mr. and Mrs. A. T. Martin and Miss Marie Martin of West Lynn and Mrs. Ray Mason of Modesto, Calif. Grant Rigby Jr delivered the East Oregonian during the ab sense of Melvin Martin. Joel Barnett of the U. S. Navy has a 30 day leave, and is help ing harvest at the Ray Ileimbig- ner ranch. John Doherty is a patient in the ; hospital in Heppner. Ho had a j leg amputated. Miss Alice Palmer of Hermis-' ton is visiting her sister, Mrs. Pat Doherty. The Maranaths Club met at the home of Mrs. Dale Ray Wednes day July 7 with Mrs. Wate Craw ford as co-hostess. The members were shown samples and plans for carpeting the floor in the Community church. A committee was appointed to decide on the project. Mrs. Grace Ware re ceived the door prize. Tenderfoot badges were given recently to the following Boy Scouts by their master, Berl Akers: Paul Pettyjohn Jr., Grant Fair Pavilion, Heppner Rigby Jr., Harold Rietmann, Bob by Rice, and Berl and Bobby Akers and John Howton. Linda Halvorsen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Halvorsen, underwent a tonsilectomy at the Pioneer Memorial hospital in Heppner Wednesday of last week. Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Stefani and children and Mr. and Mrs. Den- jward Bergevin are vacationing i in Canada. I Mr. and Mrs. Ray Heimbigner and family made a trip to Odessa, Wash., Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Sam Morris of Big Timber, Montana visited over the Fourth of July holiday with their nieces and families, Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Piper and Mr. and Mrs. William Duran.
