Heppner Gazette Tinner Thursday, April 22, f 954 Social Happening: Initiation Held Bv Legion Auxiliary at Cohn Home Tuesday Initiation ceremonies were held for ten new members of the American Legion Auxiliary at a regular business meeting Tues day night at the home of Mrs. Harold Cohn. Those initiated were Mrs. Grace Hughes, Mrs. Roy Quackenbush, Mrs. Don Munkers, Mrs. Riley Munkers, Mrs. Alonzo Edwards, Mrs. John Lane, Mrs. Elwin Hughes, Mrs. Roy Martin, Mrs. Pete Klinger and Mrs. Gar Leyva. Mrs. Earl Evans, past president of the unit acted as initiating of ficer. During the business meeting, Mrs. Richard Wells, child welfare chairman announced that a total amount of $184.17 for the year, of nwv and old clothing and other contributions had been sent to the department child welfare center. Mrs. Dick Meador, Cancer drive chairman, announced that Mor row County was the first county in the state to reach its quota. She also reported she was trying to obtain several cancer films to he shown at the Legion hall Tuesday night, May 4. Following the business meet ing, Mrs. William Labhart, Pan American and Music chairman presented a program about Mex ico. During this program games were played and prizes were won by Mrs. Alex Thompson and Mrs. Mike Saling. Members present were Mes daames William Heath, Douglas Drake, Earl Evans, Walter Edger, Pete Klinger, Roy Martin, Gar Leyve, Elwin Hughes, Jack Bai ley, Grace Hughes, Roy Quacken bush, John Hartman, Alex Thomp son, LeRoy Gardner, Kemp Dick, Clarence Johnson, Riley Munkers, Don Munkers, Mike Saling, Dick Meador, Richard Wells, Walter Becket, John Lane, Creston Robin son, Jack Van Winkle, Alonzo Edwards, Don Bellenbrock, James Farley and William Labhart. Pit was played with Mary Bates winning high, Iris Campbell se cond, Ma jo Hughes third and Helen Nelson low. Refreshments were served to the following; after the honoree opened her many gifts, Mesdames Alfred Nelson, Norman Nelson. Kenneth Peck, Kenneth Palmer. Homer Hughes, Bill B. Mar quardt, Mel Bates, Don Campbell. William Van Winkle Jr., William Van Winkle Sr., Leonard Mun kers, Randy Lott, Frank Schrage. Nita Grey, Estelle Howe, Bertha Hunt, the honoree and the hos tesses. Rev. Boulden Speaks To Soroptimist Club Rev. Lester Boulden brought a message to the Soroptimist club at their Thursday noon meeting at O'Donnell's, in keeping with Holy Week. He spoke on the cross and said "we can't measure what the cross is or what the cross does, the same as we can't measure the beauty of a rose." Mrs. W. O. George and Mrs. Floyd Adams were elected as al ternates for the delegates to the Olympia meeting April 23-21-25. Miss Nancy Adams was a guest of the club. Colleen Connor, Johnie Williams Married Saturday Miss Colleen Connor, daughtei of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Connor, be came the bride of Johnie Lee Wil liams, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Williams. Spray, at a double ring ceremony at St. Patrick's Catholic church, Saturday afternoon April 17. Rev. Francis McCormack per formed the ceremony. Given in marriage by her fath er, the bride wore a white balle rina length dross of satin over lace, a pearl trimmed Juliet cap with Chantilly lace veil and she carried a white prayer book with white roses. Miss Darlene Connor, sister of the bride, was maid of honor. She was dressed in a light blue balle rina length dress and carried red roses. Bill McFarlane, cousin of the groom, was best man. Ushers were Morgan Connor, brother of the bride and Clinton Carstad. Billy Monahan and Bob Laughlin wre candlelighters. Music was organ selection by Miss Margu erite Glavey and a vocal solo by Bill Kenny, Ave Maria. Following the ceremony a re ception was held in the church basement. Miss Darlene Wise and Miss Joyce Buschke poured. Mrs. Robert Campbell, aunt of the bride, cut the cake, after the first piece had been cut by the bride and groom. Assisting about the room were Mrs. Clarence Wise,, Mrs. Gertrude Applegate, Miss Marguerite Glavey. Mr.i. Paul Hisler and Mrs. Pirl Howell. Th.;se from out of town for the wedding were Richard McDaniel. Eugene; Mr. and Mis. Bob Wil liams, California; Mr. and Mrs. Crockett Sprouls and family, Con don; Mrs. Bob Runnion, Jr. Pen dleton; Miss Leila McLachlan, Spokane; Mrs. Howard Evans and family, Spray; and Mrs. Frances Mitchell, Portland. Miss Randy Richards, niece of the groom, was in charge of the guest book. Following a wedding trip to California the collide will be at home in Spray. Mrs. Williams graduated from Heppner high school and was secretary in the county superin tendents office before she went to Spokane to be in the office of the Inland Automobile Association. The bridegroom was a graduate of Wallowa high school, attended Oregon State College and served in the Army signal corps. Degree of Honor Inspection Held At Christian Church Official inspection of the De gree of Honor by Mrs. Clara Gert son, national committeewonian and state organizer, was held at the Christian church Tuesday night, April 13. During the meeting six new candidates initiated were Mrs. Clarence Warren, Mrs. Bud Peck. Mrs. Victor Lovgren. Bill Farra. Miss Marilyn Munkers and Miss Kay Laughlin. Graduation exercises were held for Miss Munkers who advanced from the junior group to the sen ior group. Following the meeting the drill team entertained. Evans Home Scene of Lexington HEC Club Mrs. Earl Evans was hostess to the Home Economics club of Lex ington at her home Thursday afternon, April 15. During the meeting the group Boardman Club Gives 4-H Scholarship BOARDMAN The Boardman Garden Club met monday even ing at the Grange hall with seventeen members and throe visitors present. The club voted to donate one-half scholarship to the 4-H Club for summer school at Corvallis. Special feature were slides and pictures, "Roadside", "The Rose Garden", "Skiing" and "Yellowstone National Park" shown by Mr. Ray Anderson, the school superintendent. The host esses Mrs. George Sicard and Mrs. Leo Potts served refreshments of cookies and coffee. The next meeting will be at the home of Mrs. Leo Root May 17 at 8 p. m. June Weddinq Set By Shirlee Smouse Mrs. Anne Smouse announces the engagement of Iter daughter Shirlee Janice to Richard Baker, son of Mrs. Martha Baker of Eu gene, Oregon. Miss Smouse is ;i graduate of lone high school and the Univer sity of Oregn and is now em ployed at the City of Portland Bu reau of Health as a laboratory technician. While attending the University Miss .smouse was af filiated with the Sigma Kappa sorority. Baker is a graduate of the Uni versity of Oregon and at present is a senior at the University of Oregon Medical School in Port land. A June wedding is planned in Portland. ft'orr.Ht Own. hs. Episcopal Auxiliary Party Well Attended Fouiteen tables of bridge and pinochle were in play at the card party sponsored by the Wo men s Auxiliary of the Episcopal church Monday night at the par ish house.
