Ely last week were: Mr. and Mrs. Elvin Ely of Boardman Miss Ora Ely of Pendleton, Mrs. Eldon Lilly of La Grande, Mr. and Mrs. Fayne Ely of Forest Grove, Mr. and Mrs. David Ely and daughter, Lois of Ordnance, Mrs. Wilbur Wade and sons Ralph and Merle, and Mrs. Elmer Davis of Estacada, Mr. and Mrs. Erancis Ely and Robert Adams of Salem, Mr. and Mrs. Allen Ely, Spokane and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Stone of Yakima. The Birthday Club met at the home of Mrs. Wate Crawford on Saturday with Mrs. T. N. White and Mrs. Sam Esteb as co-hostesses. The honorees were Mrs. Harry Yarnell and Mrs. Imogene Mooney. Games were played and refreshments were served. The Art Ritchies have moved into their new modern home on upper Main street. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Dobyns returned last week from Rose burg where they spent the holi days with their daughter, and family, Mr. and Mrs. Tad Hard esty. Mr. Dobyns done some fish ing in the Umpqua river while there. Mr. and Mrs. William Zinter are the parents of a son, William Neil, born Jan. 7 at the Pioneer Memorial hospital in Heppner. The grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Ferguson of Hepp ner and Mrs. Winnie Zinter of lone. Mr. and Mrs. Ferguson of Myrtle Point and Mrs. Anna Hinie of Fairview are the great -grandparents. Mrs. Sam McMillan reviewed the book "The Curve and the Tusk" by Cloete, a story of Africa at the study meeting of the Topic Club Friday Jan. 8 which was held at the home of Mrs. Echo Palmateer. Other hostesses were Mrs. McMillan and Mrs. E. R. Lundell. At the business meet ing the club decided to write Judge Garnet Barratt asking that a county nurse be obtained as soon as possible. 'Mr. and Mrs. Louis Carlson are the parents of a daughter, Cheri Ann, born Dec. 31 in Heppner. Mr. and Mrs. John Graves of Lex ington and Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Carlson are the grandparents and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Wilcox of Ashland are the great-grandparents. Mrs. Sadie Olson of Spokane is visiting at the home of her bro ther, H. O. Ely. Clyde Crawford was inducted into the army and is stationed at Fort Ord, Calif. Mrs. Crawford is staying with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Art Dalzell. Mattie Morgan returned to her home in Portland last week. She went down with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. John Eubanks. The Eastern Star social club met at the home of Mrs. Walter Ruggles Wednesday of last week with Mrs. Sam McMillan as co hostess. Pinochle was played and those winning prizes were, Mrs. Lewis Halvorsen, high and Mrs. Omar Rietmann, low. Twenty-six were present at the Extension Unit meeting at the Noel Dobyns home Thursday of last week. Mrs. Dobyns and Mrs. Roland Bergstrom gave talks on what to do before the doctor comes and also gave demonstra tions on the new artificial respi ration. Thev discussed what should be in a well equipped medicine cabinet. Refreshments were served by Mrs. Bergstrom and Mrs. Omar Rietmann. Students in the news at Ore gon State college Elise Bauern feind was on the honor roll the last semester and John Bristow was promoted to 1st sergeant in his R. O. T. C. Wm. Seehafer of Bickleton, Wash., was a visitor here last week. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Halvorsen spent the weekend in Walla Walla. Mr. and Mrs. James Lindsay spent Sunday in The Dalles where they visited their daugh ter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Pettyjohn. Rollo Crawford and Alton Yar nell left Monday for a two weeks trip to California. The guest of honor received many very beautiful and useful gifts. Dur ing the evening the guests made a scrap book of the various hap penings and meetings of the young couple, to be presented to Miss Fisk. Refreshments of salad, wafers and coffee were served by the committee assisting Mrs. John Partlow, Mrs. Dewey West Jr., Mrs. Nate Macomber, Mrs. Henry Zerney, Mrs. Ray Partlow, Mrs. Harold Baker, Mrs. Darrell Rash, Rena Anderson and Nancy Rands. Miss Fisk is to become the bride of Bill Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Miller in late winter. Nels Kristensen had the mis fortune to get a cut in the face which took six stitches to close, while assisting to fall some trees at his farm, last Wednesday. Thursday January 7th a Home Extension cotton dress shop meet ing was held at the Grange hall. Some ten members are planning on making a dress. Leaders are Mrs. Edd Skoubo, Mrs. Ralph Skoubo, and Mrs. John Walker. January 15, the leaders go to Pine City for a leaders mooting. The Grange social committee members, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Tannehlll, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Allen and Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Thorpe met at the Thorpe home Thursday evenine to plan socials for the coming year. A card party for Grangers ana ineir iamuios will be held Saturday evening, .tantiarv 30th. Harry G. Johnston, head of Brown Foundation, Walla Walla, gave two programs. "American Sky Lecturer" one for the pri mary and one for upper grades, in the Boardman high school Friday. Mr. Johnston had one hundred and twenty five meteo rites and a scale model of a navy moon rocket. One meteorite weighed ninety one pounds. Mr. Johnston stated the Boardman area was a good location for hunting meteorites and some were of great value. Sgt. Carmine Lombardi re turned Friday from his home at Tampa, Florida after a thirty day furlough with his parents. Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Tannehill, Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Hamilton and Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Thorpe motored to Lexington Saturday evening to attend the Lexington Grange meeting. County Deputy Tannehill installed several of the Lexington officers who were un able to attend the regular in stallation of officers earlier. Sgt. and Mrs. James Perkins took their young son, Larry to Hanford, Wash., Thursday where he entered the hospital, having a tonsilectomy Friday morning. Sgt. Perkins, Mrs. Perkins and Larry returned home Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Gunnar Skoubo motored to Heppner Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Kuhn motored to Portland Saturday enjoying the day. Mr. and Mrs. Elvin Ely and daughters Ileen and Ora motored to lone, Sunday for the day with Mr. Ely's father, H. O. Ely. Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Woolley and daughter Marcia, Pasco. Wash., were weekend guests in Boardman at the Elvin Ely and Dale Eades homes. Mrs. Elvin Ely and daughters, Ora, Eileen and Mrs. Eldon Lilly and children motored to Pendle ton Saturday. Mrs. Lilly and children motored on to their home in La Grande. Returning home with the Elys for the week end was Mrs. Laura Scott, Pendleton. Mr. and Mrs. Nate Macomber r eturned home Friday from San Diego, Calif., where they sent the holidays with Mr. Macombers brother-in-law and sister Mr and Mrs. Frank Darrah. On Sun- dav the Macombers motored to Pendleton to visit their son-in- law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Petteys and family. Pat Petteys returned home from the St. Anthony's hospital Sunday after a week there suffering with blood poisoning. Mr. Cyril Schooling, Junction City, Oregon, State Grange Dep uty, stopped at the home of the Countv Grange Deputy, Clyde Tannehill Monday evening on his way to Wallowa county, lie was accompanied by Mrs. Schooling. Mr. and Mrs. John Walker and Mrs. W. E. Garner motored to Pendleton Monday. Mrs. Florence Root and her mother, Mrs. Olive Mefford mo tored to Arlington where they were dinner guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Macom ber. Pete Haynes had the misfor tune to step on a nail at his ranch Monday, and on Wednesday, he and Mrs. Haynes went to Hepp ner wliere he consulted a doctor. Mrs. Haynes also had a medical checkup after her recent stay in the hospital. On their way home, they were supper guests of Mrs. Mary Cason and Ellis Cason at their Rock Creek ranch. Mr. and Mrs. Mattlon Hicks and C. A. Andrews made a busi ness trip to Heppner on Thurs- Portland Tuesday. Mr. Kunzc going down to consult a physi cian. The group expect to return Sunday. day. Mrs. Dora Case, Mrs. Edith perry, and Mrs. Margaret Wick visited Mrs. Ben Rogers Friday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. George Fichter and Mr. and Mrs. Mattlon Hicks went to John Day on Friday, where Mrs. Fichter and Mrs. Hicks had medical checkups. A number of Lonerock residents attended the card party at the Grange annex Saturday night. Those holding high score were Mattlon Hicks and Doris Harri son, and low, Ed McNutt and Mary Fichter. Ethel Harrison was hostess for the evening. Mr. Ted Palmer was a Lonerock visitor Saturday night. Grange met in regular session on Sunday, and after the meeting the master, Mrs. Cecil Hicks, an nounced there would be a dance Saturday, January 23rd, for the benefit of the March of Dimes.
