EDISON was recently asked whether he Intended to re tire. "No." he answered. 'It's un healthy." These are wise words from a man of true wisdom. His inventions and discoveries have benefited the world for many years at his advanced years many men would stop work ing, and give themselves to rest and comfort, but he remains Just as busy as ever. He knows not only secrets of elec tricity, but also secrets of good living. He has learned that life is an ex perience glorious and vital and that retirement means stagnation and death. His own splendid health and mental ability at an advanced age is a sterling example of what hard work can do for one. ENROLL FOR MEN'S RIGHTS. NOW there is a world organiza tion called Aequitas, formed to tight for Men's Rights. It is housed in a fine old Vienna palace and its members are 25,000 suffering males who have been driv en by the tyranny of femininity to join forces in the hope of prevent ing the further subjugation of men. The Aequitas says that women have always ruled France, that wo- BY E.H HOWE "The. Safe ofPokhHM The Hundred Days Good Conduct Advice Fiction is a poor thing compared with facts. I suppose I know the story of the Siege of Troy, from having read a little of it, and hear ing of it many years. It never inter ested me, its incidents seeming childish, specially that one of the river taking sides, and leaving its banks, at command of the gods, to inconvenience some of the com batants. Eut I read of Napoleon, a real man, with absorbing interest Every little while there is a new book about him, and I am not satisfied until I get hold of it His life was crowded with incidents an ordinary man can in some measure under stand. His first wife had an impudent, troublesome, highly-bred and ugly little dog he hated; he was so fre quently away from home on his big affairs that the dog did not know him, and it occasionally bit the con queror. He tried to bribe a servant to get rid of the dog, but could not, with all his power. I have heard all my life that when a man "amounts to something, his wife reverences and obeys him. Probably Napoleon amounted to more, considering everything, than any other man that ever lived, but both his wives were unfaithful, and made a specialty of nagging him. To my mind the most remarkable incident in Napoleon's life was his return from Elba. He was a pris oner of the allied nations, after his disgrace at Waterloo. His own country was in hostile hands; his soldiers had turned against him, Yet he landed in France, almost alone, and marched toward Paris, As he encountered soldiers sent against him, he spoke to them, and Intarnational Sunday School Lmsob for for September 8 NEHEMIAH REBUILDS THE WALLS OF JERUSALEM Nehemiah 4:6, 15-21 Rev. Samuel D. Price, D-D. The cup-bearer to the king was not supposed to reflect any person al sorrows in his countenance. One day it was otherwise with Nehe miah as he appeared before Arta xerxes in one of the Babylonian pal aces. "Why are you sad?" brought out a serious situation of the re turned pilgrims who went forth on two expeditions to Jerusalem. It seems that Hanani, a relative of Ne hemiah, had recently come from Judea and related how poorly af fairs were going with the Jews In the rebuilding project One serious fact was that the walls of the city were still broken down and there could be no seclusion for recon struction or safety against the en emy as long as this was so. The second question was a gen uine surprise. "For what does thou request?" said the king. Nehemiah had his own eager desire but he had not framed it for presentation, but with quick uplift in prayer unto Jehovah he expressed his patriotic longing. He would be glad to be commissioned by Artaxerxes to lead a third expedition back to the land whence they had been taken cap imtuag fctpuil HtBWi men voters outnumber the men in England, and that the United States is completely under the domination of the ladies. The Aequitas admits it does not want to reestablish the tyrrany of the male. (Evidently that is con sidered a hopeless task.) The program of the Aequitas, if carried out, would make It impossi ble for women of means or women capable of self-support, or women who leave their husbands within three years of marriage, to get ali mony. Divorced women would be denied the use of their husbands' names. There are other purposes of this movement for Men's Rights. But it is a rather timid, milk-and-watery movement For example, many Am erican men are in it, But they re fuse to make their names public! They're afraid. And who would n't be? Run a G.-T. Want Ad. He walked the steps of the king's palace, removed his travel-stained clothing, went to bed in security, and fell asleep to the sweet sound of "Long Live Napoleon!" In all his omnipotence God never witnessed a stranger scene. When good conduct does not pay, I do not urge it; indeed, I believe that when a man's conduct is not generally profitable, it is not good, and he should change it. The scheme of life contemplates a heal thy, normal body, and in 95 per cent of births is natural inheritance. This entails food getting, shelter, association with pleasing creatures of our kind, and thus Conduct is born. As it is good orbad, we suc ceed or fail. When most people talk, they are merely barking what others have said. The futility of good advice has often impressed me. ... A gentle man in Michigan who has long made a business of giving advice about securing employment, and who has written extensively on the subject, writes to me to confess he is out of a Job, and cannot find one. Somehow this old gentleman re minds me of a doctor who has spent all his life in advising others as to health, and is himself ill, and writ ing to others for advice. tive. After quietly meeting leaders for three days Nehemiah planned a night ride about Jerusalem that he might make a thorough survey of the needs. Then he organized a real building program. The walls were divided into 44 sections and a des ignated group was appointed to build each part Read Nehemiah 1-7 for the full context, and plenty of thrills will be found in the plots and the counter plots. Three men were named who tried to frustrate every project of Nehe miah. Behind them were the Sam aritans and seven other peoples, all of whom made a coalition against the Jews. The opposition became still more aggressive when the walls were half up, possibly to a height of 100 feet. All sorts of arguments were presented to delay the build ing. One weapon was ridicule, as the enemy would come close to the walls and scoff at the workmen, declaring the walls could not keep out even a fox. Open letters were sent, charging Nehemiah with var ious plots against Babylon. They tried to get him to attend a confer ence and his reply was "I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down." When they threatened his life friends advised that he seek refuge in the temple. Nehemiah boldly answered "Should such a man as I flee?" A Job For The Exterminator 111 UPZ-W-'U j 1 0 tteattiiean 17 Jvhn Childhood Gems One of the first "thrillers" of my youth was a story, wherein a boy of about my own size killed a fero cious giant with a small round peb ble hurled from his sling. This giant was a double-dyed villain, and, needed killing. The boy became a king, and a hero; his name is, even yet among the best known on earth. . . . My mother told me this story first; and she assured me of its ab solute truth. I have never ques tioned it to this day. She told me God was with young David; that I must keep Him with me, so that giants could not harm me. Another favorite was the story of an American boy, who thoughtless ly hacked down his father's prize cherry-tree; it, too, will stay with me always just as true as when my mother read it to me. Its won derful lesson, more potent for good than most of modern teaching "I cannot tell a lie!" A liar is just a thief in other dress and more to be despised. You can padlock to me at the office of my attorney. S. E.
