Signatures of at least 50 per cent of the property owners would be required on the petition. A special election would be held at the direction of the county court, and a tax levied. The bill also pro vides for dissolution of a fire dis trict upon the presentation of a similar petition. Half Holiday for Officers "I hold out for open offices on Saturday afternoon," declared L. E. Wilkes, representative for Washing ton county, In a discussion before the house committee on Counties and Cities. "That is the only time the farmers have to transact their business and I do not believe the county officers should close their offices at this time." The bill under discussion was house bill No. 182 which fixes the hours of business for all county of fices in counties less than 100,000 population, from 8 a. m. to 5 p. m., and on Saturdays from 8 a. m. to 1 p. m. "I would suggest an amendment to the bill," said Representative J. F. Clark, Clackamas county, author of the bill, "which requires only the offices of the county clerk, the re corder and the sheriff to be kept open at noon and on Saturday. These are the only ones necessary." The bill was submitted to the house by the committee with the amendment suggested by Mr. Clark.
