a petition to the county court of
the district. Signatures of at least
50 per cent of the property owners
would be required on the petition.
A special election would be held at
the direction of the county court,
and a tax levied. The bill also pro
vides for dissolution of a fire dis
trict upon the presentation of a
similar petition.
Half Holiday for Officers
"I hold out for open offices on
Saturday afternoon," declared L. E.
Wilkes, representative for Washing
ton county, In a discussion before
the house committee on Counties
and Cities. "That is the only time
the farmers have to transact their
business and I do not believe the
county officers should close their
offices at this time."
The bill under discussion was
house bill No. 182 which fixes the
hours of business for all county of
fices in counties less than 100,000
population, from 8 a. m. to 5 p. m.,
and on Saturdays from 8 a. m. to
1 p. m.
"I would suggest an amendment
to the bill," said Representative J.
F. Clark, Clackamas county, author
of the bill, "which requires only the
offices of the county clerk, the re
corder and the sheriff to be kept
open at noon and on Saturday.
These are the only ones necessary."
The bill was submitted to the
house by the committee with the
amendment suggested by Mr. Clark.
A minority report was turned in by
Representative Wilkes.
