Shipping Board "If 'the proper encouragement is given to the electric light and power industry, the industry will spring forward in the next dcade faster even than in the past decade. The result unquestionably will be a lower ing of the cost of living and the conserva tion of national resources which cannot fail to benefit the whole population." Ten years ago the generat ing capacity of the electric light and power industry was one third of what it is today. In that time the consumption of electricity for light alone has shown a four-fold in crease. The tremendous upswing in the use of electric power, in thousands of manufacturing processes, in commerce, on farms, and in the home, is the result of progressive policies which have controlled the op eration of electric light and power companies. Beginning as an untried curiosity, electrical service in America was founded on the principle that the economies of large scale production and low prices which encourage widespread use, are the best means to healthy growth. So thoroughly has the truth of this principle been demon strated, and so efficiently have electric light and power companies been run, that the demand for electricity stead ily Increases while Its Cost has consistently declined. With earnings limited by public regulation, only the continued stimulus of individ ual initiative in their man agement can secure the un failing efficiency which the growing pressure of demand makes Imperative for the fu ture of electrical service. 1 Pacific Power & Light Co.
