FIFTY-NINE years ago your Uncle Samuel made a great business deal tile purchase of Alaska. President Grant's administra tion bought Alaska from Russia by treaty, paying only $7,200,000 to add 531,409 square miles of ter ritory to American possessions. In these 59 years the purchase has yielded more than $500,000, 000 in cash returns. A single gold prospector, with capital of a grub stake, a pick and shovel, has tak en out as much as the original pur chase price. In 1925, the yield for America was $5,042,862 in gold and silver and $55,440,645 in general mer chandise. The total for the fiscal year was $71,042,862, or just $53, 842,862 more in one year than the whole territory originally cost. The seal yield from hte Pribilof Islands alone nets more than $700,000 a year. There are both placer and lode mining for gold and silver. Oil is being hunted in various sections, but as yet has not been developed. The salmon, halibut and other fisheries are of great value. All of which proves the trans action was one shrewd stroke by the United States Government. An Echo of the Newberry Affair. EXTRAVAGANT use of money in elections is again "on the calendar" of the United States Senate. Once more, the people are to hear the cry of "Newberryism," charges and counter-charges of rampant political corruption. This time the Senate, through a committee already appointed by Vice-President Dawes, will sift the nomination of Congressman Wil liam S. Vare ovr Senator George Wharton Pepper in the recent Re publican primaries in Pennsyl vania. It is generally conceded that more money from $2,000,000 to $5,000,000 has been spent in the Pennsylvania fight than in any other primary in this country. That's a lot of money for any purpose, and entirely too much, the Senate believes, to win a chance for a seat in the United States Government. It's so much more than Senator Newberry was supposed to have spent that the Newberry case sinks into oblivion. Newberry was accused of having spent $195, 000 to win a primary from Henry Ford in 1918. That amount caused a furore that stirred the senate to the point of resolving that ihe ex penditure of such a sum as this was "contrary to sound public pol icy." It declared that primaries fought with huge amounts of mon ey were dangerous to the perpet uity of a free government" and "harmful to the honor and dignity of the Senate. If the reports of the Pennsyl vania spree are anything like true, Newberry was a short skate. And politics has not been purified. In stead, the price of a seat in the Senate of the United States has increased ten times from $195,- 000 to $2,000,000. Exceeding the Functions of Government. MANUFACTURER. rpHERE is no businss or indus- X dustry in the country wnicn gives so unselfishly of its time and money in support of the gov ernment, as do the publishers. And there is no industry in the country which feels so heavily the hand of government competition as do the publishers. Under its plan of having return addresses printed on stamped envelopes, the government has built up a com mercial printing business which excludes competition. On the same "theory," that the government can have return ad dresses printed on envelopes cheaper than it can be done by pri vate firms, it might also furnish letterheads, billheads and other printing. The printers and publishers do not object to the government sell ing stamped envelopes, as this is a function of government the same as the making of money. But they can see no reason for the government extending its activity into printing individual return ad dresses on such envelopes. This is an entirely separate operation, and a function which should be performed by local printing offices. The banks, the grocery stores, the department stores and manu facturing plants would object strongly if the government sug gested producing or selling the particular commodities or services which they now render, and yet they see nothing wrong in the gov ernment invading the field of the printing industry. The Reason America Prospers. WORKERS in factories in New York City received an average of $12.81 a week in De cember, 1914; in December, 1925, they received $30.73. For Janu ary, even this last high pay was boosted to $30.85 per worker. Wages have increased about 183 per cent; living costs have in creased about 70 per cent. These figures, approximately, prevail all over the United States. It is from this surplus earning power that the country draws the pay for its autos, its radios, its new homes, its corporation stocks with 15,000,000 owners. While some industries and some sec tions of the country have not been uniformly prosperous, these fig ures show a general average. But everywhere there has been a lift in conditions. Radio, the World En lightener. RADIO is bringing the nations of the world into closer con tact through international tests and quick transmission of news items. World's leading manufacturers of radio equipment at annual con vention at Atlantic City predicted that radio will bring to listeners not only the sounds of music and spoken words, but will eventually bring television, showing the ac tual performances of actors thous ands of miles away. They declared radio sets will be vastly simplified, made more com pact and staple; and voiced the need of adequate radio legisla tion, which while encouraging the industry, would assure the public the best possible service.
