TiHERE has been much dirty mud-slinging at the Portland Oregonian by newspapers and in dividuals over the state because of its open endorsement of Frederick Steiwer for United States senator. The basis for this criticism is plac ed by most of these on the ground that it is intrinsically wrong for a newspaper to endorse political candidates. Which, we believe, is nothing but a big smoke screen. The reason for this back-biting is that those making the big howl do not agree with the Oregonian's choice, and they are scared by the Oregonian taking such a stand be cause of its prestige and large fol lowing over the state. In the case of newspapers leading the scrap, a majority of them lack the nerve to take such a stand themselves, resorting rather to round-about ways of accomplishing the same ends, without chancing their pa per's welfare on their own judg ment, such as it might be. We commend the Oregonian for the stand it has taken. It has come out open and above-board, leaving no doubt in the public mind as to where it can be found in the senatorial scrap, and leav ing no secret avenues by which it might later- crawl out. In doing this it has virtually staked its good reputation as a clean news paper on the judgment of its edi tors, a judgment that we believe is sound in this instance, as it has proved to be divers times in the past. Every newspaper editor is hu man. It is impossible for any hu man being to be absolutely im partial in anything, especially any thing political. Every newspaper editor has his personal choice of candidates, and all are working to have their choice given favorable consideration by the electorate. Most of them endeavor to shape the minds of their readers in this respect in some way through the columns of their papers, though few have the nerve to take the means the Oregonian has used. The Oregonian has taken a step, which, if followed by every newspaper in the state, would go a long way toward lifting the stigma off state politics that now surrounds it. Newspaper readers in general today place little faith in anything of a political nature that appears in the newspapers, looking upon it mostly as so much propaganda. If they knew exact ly where every newspaper stands with regard to political candidates and political issues they would then be able to gauge the value of items appearing in the news columns. Not only would this help in dispelling the clouds sur rounding state politics, but it would go a long way toward in creasing public confidence in their organs of speech, that lamentably has been slowly slipping away in the last few decades. It is high time newspaperdom were able to see beyond the im mediate penny fogging its vision LUMBER measured with the GOLDEN RULE We are ready to meet your building needs! DIABETES, that kills men, be gins by destroying the pan creas. Professor Bensley of Chicago University has succeeded in de stroying und restoring the pan creas of a rabbit. Diabetes has been successfully fought, recently, by the use of in sulin, a pancreatic extract. Now science, knowing that the pan creas after severe injury' can re store itself by growing new tis sues, as certain lizards grow a new tail, hopes to fight in a new way. All this will shock and disturb those who believe that there is no such thing as disease, and that all you need do is to deny its reality. But it may cure diabetes, that kills millions and can't be helped by amiable theorizing. And that is the important thing. In the Course of Time. tN motion pictures we see the X first pictures of Mauna Loa's latest great eruption. Smoke and flame rise slowly from flowing fields of lava that soon harden into smooth and apparently hope less rock. Men now living will never see anything grow there, and the an cients, of course, thought that land thus formed was cursed for ever. But time and the weather break up the rock, earth forms slowly through the centuries. The earth worms do their marvelous work, grinding up the soil into tiny particles, producing fertility. Plants and grass grow. Cattle eat the grass, man eats the ox instead of wasting time digesting plants. He writes a good book on human ity, moves a little farther upward thanks to the old volcano, throwing up fertilizing treasure from inside the earth. Steiwer Can Win. HE has the habit of winning. He has twice before been a candidate for office, winning elec tion as district attorney of Uma tilla and Morrow counties and la ter as state senator. Both times the race was made in full accord with the direct primary law, with an open field and no favors asked. He is content to fight it out on that basis. In the present campaign for senator he is a can didate in strictest accord with the direct primary. He came out squarely on his own feet. When he heard of impending conven tions to recommend candidates, he asked his friends not to pre sent his name to them. Long after his hat was in the ring, he was indorsed by a great number of prominent newspapers of the state as the party candidate For State SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT Republican Candidate CHARLES A.
