A BIG stroke for Heppner is made in the cooperation of fered by the county by placing their money with that of the Bu reau of Public Roads of the for estry service, in starting work on the Heppner-Spray road, and we wish to congratulate the county court in signing up the contract with the government and thus se cure the $50,000 they had to put in on this work. The work, we understand, will be commenced on the far end, but that much of the road will be completed, and then there is no doubt that the state highway commission will be in position to see that the gap is closed between McKinny creek and the mouth of Chapin creek, which will entirely complete the road. They are just at present un able to come in and put this road on the state map, but our impres sion is, from what they have done for us heretofore, they will not let a gap long remain in a road as important as this; they are "sold" on this road, and will do their part just as soon as the funds are avail able. It was good business, how ever, for the county court to tie up now with the forest service, and the proposition is in shape so the Bureau of Public Roads will proceed at once to let the contract on this work. They give every as surance that the road will be en tirely completed to our county line, and Wheeler county is cooperat ing on their side, and the tie-up with the John Day highway near Spray will be accomplished in a reasonable period of time. This will be the means of get ting back to Heppner some of the interior trade that has gone else where the past number of years, and then this road will also put us on a through highway as soon as the Oregon-Washington highway is completed to the Umatilla coun ty line. We are grateful to the county court for the action taken the past week in tying up with the the for est service; to Commissioner G. A. Bleakman for his earnest ef forts in behalf of the project for the several years that he has worked faithfully and untiringly to get some definite co-operation by state and forest service in the actual work of building the road; and also to President Van Marter of the Heppner Commercial club, who is "blamed" for actually put ting up a definite proposition to the Bureau of Public Roads at Portland a couple of months ago, when he visited that body with members of our county court and told them that we had voted mon ey to the amount of $75,000 to be spent on this road. The federal body jumped at this and offered their financial support to the amount of $50,000, and now the contract between the Department of Agriculture, under whose juris diction the Bureau of Public roads is operating, and the county court of Morrow county, makes it pos sible tor the contract of actual construction to be let, and the work go ahead to completion. We believe this action on the part of our county court will bring about the completion of this important piece of highway from two to four years sooner than might have been expected had a different course been pursued. Register Now. OUR attention is called to the fact that there are many elec tors in Morrow county who are not up on their registration, and these may desire in fact they will be sure to want to vote at the coming primary efection. The authorities at the court house say the time is short in which to reg ister, and all these delinquents should hurry up and get their names on the registration books. Unselfish Idealism Behind Local Newspapers. WISCONSIN STATE JOURNAL. THE local newspaper in the United States is each year get ting on a firmer foundation and becoming more and more useful to its home community. It is the home newspaper which boosts the town, year in and year out, which takes the lead in every enterprise which has for its pur pose the upbuilding of the com munity. We frequently hear it said that the old-time independent spirit of the newspaper is gone, that its editorial policy is now subservient to the business office. Yet this is not true. There is more unselfish idealism in the average local newspaper than in any other busi ness enterprise. . It frequently speaks out in the way which it be lieves will be for the good of the nation and of the community, re gardless of what the consequences may be from a business stand point. The local newspaper is the prin cipal booster for the community, and it does its boosting often with out hope of material reward. Un fortunate is the community which neither appreciates nor supports its local newspaper. Rough on " Farmers' Friends." THE MANUFACTURER. LONG PRAIRIE is just about the geographical center of the great wheat state of Minneso ta. It is a typical town of 1,000 people, with a weekly newspaper, the Leader, whose editor has this to say about export bonus schemes, equalization schemes and daily forays upon Congress by profes sional agricultural propagandists: "We would like to support some one for the legislature, who would run on a platform of putting all 'friends of the farmer' in jail for 90-day terms or so. "These so-called farmer friends, with their calamity howling, are doing the farmer and the cause of farming a great harm. There is nothing the matter with farming, if these professional friends would leave it alone. "As a matter of fact, but little of the calamity howling comes from the farmer. It is producsd for the purpose of fooling the far mers, and by a class of men who want to make use of the farmer for their own selfish benefit. "Let a movement be started to sit down on the professional friends of the farmer. Such a movement would be something really worth while in behalf of constructive agricultural and farm Buick Controlla ble Beam Headlights make night driving a pleasure Bright light all the time, with steering wheel control. SURGEON GFNERAL HUGH S. CUMMINC of the Public Health Serv ice, who is one of the men in Washington who can be credited with knowing what he is talking about, has issued a warn ing designed especially for the home garage automobile tinkers. Motors, he said, should not be run longer than thirty seconds in a garage even though the door or window may be open unless the exhaust is directly connected with the outside air. Starting the en gine and getting under it and peer ing into its entrails, the burgeon says, is virtually inviting suicide. The increasing habit also of using motor fuels for cleansing purposes involves an element of danger to the human system. LEGAL NOTICES NOTICE OF EXECUTOR'S SALE OF REAL PROPERTY.
