Although there are friendly con tests on in this county for several county offices between republicans, there is no indication that the fac tions in any one of the contest will become irritated to the point lhat any pore spots wil. result. So far the bouts have come up in a friendly way, each candidate appar ently being inclined to meet his opponent fairly and squarely and which ever goes down to defeat his opponent will rally to his support after the convention. That is what they should do, and there is no room to believe that it w 11 be otherwise with any of the present candidates All go into the convention with the full knowledge that only one can be nominated for each office, and that th balance mui-t suff' r d feat. Representative Martin of South Dakota, has n quested the house to direct Secretary Cortelyou to ascertain if any form of Monopoly is being worked by the packers. Mr. Martin has many constituents that are cattle raisers and he wants the new department of com merce and labor to look into the beef question. Stock raisers gen- erally all over the country com plain that tbey are not getting en ough for their cattle. They think the trice for beef on the hoof 19 , . , , , , , Ilardman M. A. This harmonious oxIiti'D brought ahout by the gremnt of the vaiious factions to sub mit names, n ore e- em ly is this true in the clerkship co test, to the executive committee of the Koo evelt c!ub, and from these lists of names a list of dele- gates was chosen tor the rennet cf tientry, Mt. Not only doe it Fpread havoc in its path, as it races sea ward, but it robs the soil of that in which it will stand in great need before the ''Fall rains" are with us again. The removal of timber which formerly theltered deep ra vines in which snow remains nearly all Summer has been a great con tributing factor in causing these Fpring flood?, and in many locali ties where this, natural protection has been removed something rhould lie done to nmedy the damage, The vast arid plains east of the Cascade Mountains are rich in agricultural popeibilities if water could only b secured for them, and if the water which is now iuthing to the ocean could be only partially controlled or stored it would add millions to the wealth of the Mate.
