CHOOSING A LIFE WORK M T CLI teaeher of German who knew as much of human nature as any one whom 1 have ever known. uid to any that It did not so much niatter what one studied or did aa buw one studied or did It. The aver age normal person, If he has ieraUt ence and determination and Is willing to work, ran do one thing about a well as he eau another. lelre plays a great part In an) man's choice of a life work. If Butler had submitted himself to any one of the mental tests which a number of educational Institutions are now re quiring of their students, he would not have rated very highly aa a can didate for honors In engineering. He waa rather a slow thinker; thinking for him wss. In fact, a difficult proe ms, but he was aware of this defi ciency through the regular relteVutlon of the fact by bis parents and teach ers. Ue was determined, however, to, stud; engineering and would not be dlmuaded by any of the crepe hangers who predicted failure for hlta. He knew he would have to work and he was witling to do so. He got on; be suceeedrd. Mental equipment should be takeu Into consideration In choosing one's life work. It Is not easy for moat ot ns fulrly to estimate our own ability, and we cannot nlwaye depend upon the judgment of those who are near est to as, who too frequently urge us to do the things they would have liked to do, rather than attempt to form an unprejudiced Judgment as to what we are beat titled to do. What one does luoat easily, he Is likely to d lieat. Just ss what one likes to do be la pretty sure to (o furthest In. Any huxlneas or work of life has in it dim uliiea enough, and whatever helps to 'ecn the uumber of these or to make hem seem less disagreeable shouM ml lie overlooked. Opportunity should eery often de--Ide one's choice of a profession or a Ife work. Hurt really wanted to be in engineer, but there waa the farm railing to hi in, and he waa the only aon. The land had been lu the fam ily for generations; hla father and hit grandfather and he. himself, hsd been born on It It iw clearly his duty to stick to It, and it was his great opportunity. One should not f set that In choos lug life work If thould cotmlde. where he can h-i -erve the worfu Service counts n i te ms much as an) other sort of sin an. IfS), HIS, Wcirt, rwnatr Uatae.
